Microsoft announced three audio models on October 1, 2026: MAI-Transcribe-2-Streaming for speech recognition, plus MAI-Voice-2.1 and MAI-Voice-2.1-Flash for speech generation. The transcription model can return and revise text while someone is still speaking; the two voice models turn text into multilingual speech, with Flash aimed at latency-sensitive, high-volume workloads.
What Microsoft released
The announcement groups the models by task: one converts speech to text, while two convert text to speech. Microsoft lists Microsoft Foundry and MAI Playground as access routes for all three; Vercel and Azure Voice Live are also listed. The voice models are available through OpenRouter. LiveKit is marked “coming soon,” rather than currently available. Platform access and regional availability can change, so check Microsoft’s announcement for current details.

MAI-Transcribe-2-Streaming: speech to text
MAI-Transcribe-2-Streaming is designed to provide interim text as audio arrives. Instead of waiting for a speaker to finish, it returns partial hypotheses and later revises them into stable text. Microsoft says the first partials arrive just over 100 milliseconds after audio is received. That is a vendor-reported figure, not a latency guarantee for every connection or application.

MAI-Voice-2.1: multilingual speech generation
MAI-Voice-2.1 is Microsoft’s standard multilingual text-to-speech option. Microsoft says a single voice can speak across 23 languages and 26 locales while retaining a consistent voice identity and using native accents. That makes it relevant to products that need one recognizable voice across multiple language versions, though the announcement does not establish how well it performs for every language or voice.
MAI-Voice-2.1-Flash: latency-sensitive generation
Flash is positioned for high-volume applications where response speed matters. Microsoft says it can generate 45 seconds of audio with 150 milliseconds of end-to-end latency. It also reports 55% faster model inference and approximately 60% lower pricing than comparable models. Those comparative figures are Microsoft’s claims; they are not independent benchmark results established here.

What the performance claims do—and do not—show
Microsoft says MAI-Transcribe-2 ranked No. 1 for final and partial transcript accuracy on Artificial Analysis. The ranking is reported in Microsoft’s launch announcement; the benchmark methodology and original leaderboard were not independently reviewed for this article. A leaderboard result also cannot establish which model will work best with a particular microphone, accent, background noise, vocabulary, or speaking style.

For a practical comparison, test the exact workload rather than relying on a single headline metric. For transcription, consider language coverage, partial-result delay, final accuracy on representative audio, speaker labeling, timestamps, and domain vocabulary. For speech generation, compare language and locale coverage, voice consistency, latency, throughput, per-character cost, and whether voice cloning is appropriate for your application.

Voice cloning and consent
Microsoft says both voice models support cloning across supported languages from a few seconds of reference audio and include consent guardrails. The announcement does not provide a detailed evaluation of how effective those guardrails are. Teams considering cloning should assess consent, rights to the reference voice, and safeguards for their own use case rather than treating the existence of vendor controls as proof that every use is appropriate.
Where the models may fit
Microsoft presents the models as building blocks for applications such as voice agents that can respond before a caller finishes speaking, multilingual assistants that detect a spoken language and reply in the same voice, and interactive tutoring, role-play, simulations, narration, or conversational media. These are proposed applications, not independently verified case studies.

The choice depends first on the job: use the transcription model when an application needs recognized text, and the voice models when it needs generated speech. For a system combining both, estimate the full application cost and test both stages against representative audio, response times, languages, and volume. Microsoft’s published comparisons alone do not determine the best fit for a specific workload.
