Some Microsoft 365 work accounts may stop syncing with Apple Mail on Mac as Microsoft blocks non-Microsoft apps from using Exchange Web Services (EWS) to connect to Exchange Online. Microsoft began the change on October 1, 2026, but the timing depends on rollout and each organization’s configuration. A separate Apple Mail disconnection issue is also reported by Microsoft, so a failed sync does not by itself show that EWS retirement is the cause.
Why Microsoft 365 accounts may stop syncing
Microsoft says it began blocking EWS requests from non-Microsoft apps to Exchange Online on October 1, 2026. Apple’s deployment guide says Mail and Calendar on Mac use EWS for Exchange integration, putting those Mac apps on the affected connection path. Microsoft says the change applies to Exchange Online and Microsoft 365, not Exchange Server, and does not affect Outlook for Mac or other Microsoft products. The start date does not mean every account stopped working on that day. Rollout and tenant configuration affect when an account is impacted. Microsoft tells organizations to watch Message Center and the Exchange blog for communications; your Microsoft 365 administrator is the person who can confirm your tenant’s EWS status and supported clients.
Three different issues can look like the same sync failure
A current Apple Mail disconnection issue
Microsoft Support currently reports that Microsoft 365 email accounts are being disconnected from Apple Mail and says it is working to resolve the issue. Its reconnect instructions do not identify EWS retirement as the cause. Try those steps if Mail prompts for credentials, but do not assume reconnecting will restore service if your organization has blocked EWS. Microsoft’s reconnect guidance has the current instructions.

Legacy Basic authentication
Microsoft says up-to-date Apple clients can use modern authentication. If an app is still using Basic authentication, Microsoft advises updating its settings or removing and re-adding the account. This is separate from EWS retirement: Microsoft says EWS already supports modern authentication. A sign-in or authentication problem and an EWS block therefore call for different diagnosis.
EWS retirement on Mac
The EWS change concerns non-Microsoft apps connecting to Exchange Online. Apple’s guide identifies EWS as the protocol used by Exchange integration in Mac Mail and Calendar. It does not establish that every Microsoft 365 account on Mac has already been blocked.

What to try if Apple Mail asks you to sign in
- Re-enter your credentials. On iPhone or iPad, go to Settings → Apps → Mail → Mail Accounts, select the Microsoft 365 account, and sign in again when prompted. On other devices, use the account prompt shown by the current operating system.
- If sign-in still fails, remove and add the account again. Choose Microsoft Exchange when adding it, then follow the on-screen sign-in steps. Microsoft’s reconnection article provides detailed iOS and iPadOS steps. Removing an account may delete locally cached account data; follow your organization’s instructions before removing a managed account.
- If Mac sync later stops again, ask your administrator to check the tenant. Ask whether EWS is still permitted for your account and which mail client your organization supports. Re-entering credentials cannot undo an EWS block.

Features also vary by platform and protocol: Apple lists Exchange calendar capabilities such as invitations, free/busy lookup, recurring events, updates, reminders and task sync, attachments, structured locations, and Mac calendar delegation.

Apple says it is actively working with Microsoft to move Mail, Calendar, Contacts, Notes, and Reminders to Microsoft Graph in a future macOS 27 update. Apple has not given a release date on its cited deployment page. Treat this as a planned change, not a fix available now or a promise of a specific launch date.
