It depends on your files and how you work. LibreOffice is a strong choice for local editing when you want a desktop suite with lower published disk and memory requirements. Microsoft 365 is the better fit when your work depends on Microsoft features, cloud services, or collaboration in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

“HP Stream” covers different configurations, so confirm your laptop’s product number and Windows state before installing anything. HP’s specification for the Stream 11-ak0053dx, for example, lists 64 GB eMMC storage, 4 GB onboard RAM, and Windows 11 Home in S mode. Those specifications do not describe every Stream.

Which office suite uses less storage?
The publishers’ stated requirements favor LibreOffice for a lower-footprint desktop install, but they are not speed tests and do not establish how either suite will perform on a particular Stream.

Installed capacity and available space are different. Windows, updates, personal files, and other apps occupy storage, so a 64 GB Stream may have much less than 4 GB free. Check available space in File Explorer or Windows Settings before choosing an installer.
Can I install LibreOffice on an HP Stream in S mode?
Not with the usual downloaded desktop installer while S mode remains enabled. Microsoft says Windows in S mode runs compatible apps from Microsoft Store; LibreOffice’s requirements page points to its desktop installer and says administrator rights are needed. Check whether a suitable Store version is available for your exact device before deciding to switch.
To leave S mode in Windows 11, open Settings > System > Activation and use the option to switch to Windows 11 Home. Microsoft Support says, “There’s no charge to switch out of S mode, but you won’t be able to turn it back on.” Treat this as a permanent change, not a reversible install setting. Microsoft offers free browser versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint on its Microsoft 365 web-app page. This can avoid installing desktop software, making it a practical option for a Stream that remains in S mode. The cited US offering requires files to be saved in and shared from OneDrive, and lists 5 GB of free OneDrive storage. It is an online option, not proof of feature parity with paid desktop apps.

Microsoft says its web apps support real-time collaboration. If you need browser-based shared editing, that can be more useful than choosing a desktop suite solely on install size. You will need internet access for the online workflow.

Can LibreOffice open Word and Excel files?
Do not assume every file will retain perfect formatting or behavior. The official requirements cited here do not establish compatibility for every Word or Excel document, especially files that rely on macros, complex workbook features, specialized fonts, or intricate layouts. Before moving a school or work task to LibreOffice, open copies of the actual files you use and check the results; keep the original files unchanged until you are satisfied.

Check these details before choosing
- Find the HP product number and confirm the laptop’s actual storage and memory rather than relying on the Stream name.
- Check the Windows edition and version, and whether S mode is enabled.
- Look at available local disk space, not just the drive’s advertised capacity.
- Decide whether you need offline editing, Microsoft-specific features, browser collaboration, or compatibility with macro-enabled files.
