How AI Agents Choose Products and Complete Purchases

AI shopping agents can compare products and help with checkout, but selection, authorization, payment, and fulfillment remain distinct steps handled differently by each platform.

AI shopping agents can interpret a request, find products, compare offers against stated preferences, and—in some eligible services—help complete checkout. But there is no single shopping algorithm shared by all agents: selection rules vary by platform, and a product recommendation is not the same as an authorized, accepted, and fulfilled order.

How does an AI agent choose a product?

The shopper’s prompt sets the task and its constraints. It might specify a category and budget, as in “best running shoes under $100,” or identify a recipient or interest, as in “gifts for a ceramics lover”—examples used by OpenAI to illustrate shopping queries.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

For ChatGPT shopping, OpenAI says results are organic and unsponsored. Its documentation says relevance guides results and identifies availability, price, quality, whether a merchant is the primary seller, and support for Instant Checkout among factors that may affect how merchants selling the same product are ranked. OpenAI has not disclosed a universal scoring formula, and those factors should not be assumed to describe other agents.

What to compare in the results

  • Fit: Does the item match the request and its stated limits, such as intended use, recipient, or budget?
  • Offer: Check the listed price and availability, and account for shipping and tax when they are shown.
  • Product and seller: Consider the available quality information and whether the listing is from the primary seller or another merchant.
  • Variant and delivery: Confirm the exact size, color, model, stock, and fulfillment details before ordering.
  • Checkout: Check which merchant is selling the item and what authorization or payment steps the service requires.

These are practical comparison questions based on factors described in OpenAI’s shopping and merchant documentation; they are not a published ranking formula for the industry.

What information helps an agent represent a product?

An agent can only compare the offer information available to it. In OpenAI’s documented merchant setup, product feeds can include identifiers, descriptions, prices, inventory, media, and fulfillment options. OpenAI calls for regularly refreshed feeds, with daily snapshots and an initial sample used for validation. It says required fields support accurate price and availability displays; recommended attributes can help relevance and trust.

Google’s Merchant Center guidance likewise tells merchants to keep product data and brand assets current. For UCP-powered checkout, only eligible listings with the specified checkout-eligibility attribute display the Buy button. A missing or stale detail can therefore affect what a shopper sees or whether checkout is available; it does not establish that an agent independently verified the product.

Can an AI agent buy something for you?

Some services support checkout within the AI surface for eligible products and merchants. In OpenAI’s documented Instant Checkout flow, the user selects Buy and confirms order, shipping, and payment details. ChatGPT then communicates the required information to the merchant through the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP). The merchant validates the request and accepts or declines the order.

OpenAI’s documented checkout sequence

  1. ChatGPT shows products. If a product supports Instant Checkout, the user can choose Buy and confirm the order, shipping, and payment details.
  2. ChatGPT creates or updates a checkout session with the merchant through ACP and passes the required information.
  3. The merchant validates the order, determines fulfillment, calculates tax, runs its risk checks, and accepts or declines the order on its own systems.
  4. The merchant charges the payment through its existing payment service provider (PSP). The Delegated Payment Spec describes a one-time payment request with an amount cap and expiry; the PSP returns a token that is passed to the merchant.
  5. If the order is accepted, the merchant handles fulfillment, returns, customer support, and order communications.

OpenAI says users explicitly confirm each step in this flow. It also says payment tokens are limited to a particular merchant and amount, and that only information needed to complete the order is shared with the user’s permission. Those are descriptions of OpenAI’s documented flow, not guarantees about every shopping agent.

Google’s UCP-powered checkout

Google documents checkout buttons on eligible listings in AI Mode in Google Search and Gemini. Its Merchant Center guidance says checkout can take place on Google surfaces while the merchant remains the seller of record. The documented checkout uses standard funding primary account numbers stored in Google Wallet; Google says additional payment forms may become available later.

The rollout is phased. Merchants must meet early-access requirements, submit an interest form, complete the technical implementation, and configure listing eligibility. Google also distinguishes UCP checkout from its agentic checkout feature, which buys on a customer’s behalf directly on a merchant website. UCP is intended to standardize programmatic exchanges between agents and merchant backends across a wider range of commerce journeys.

Who sells the product and processes the payment?

An AI interface can coordinate discovery and pass checkout details without becoming the seller or payment processor. In OpenAI’s ACP description, the merchant remains responsible for validating and accepting the order, fulfillment decisions, tax calculation, risk checks, and charging through its PSP. OpenAI says it is not the merchant of record. Google’s UCP checkout documentation also says the merchant remains the seller of record.

That division matters if something goes wrong: the agent’s role in presenting or transmitting an order does not, by itself, establish who accepted the transaction or who is responsible for fulfillment and post-purchase support. In the documented OpenAI flow, those merchant duties include returns and customer communications.

How do ACP, UCP, and Visa’s Trusted Agent Protocol differ?

System Documented role Scope and caveat
Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) OpenAI describes ACP as a connection between ChatGPT users and merchants for catalog information and checkout. OpenAI says it developed ACP with Stripe and merchant partners. Instant Checkout is available to approved partners. The merchant backend and its PSP retain core order and payment responsibilities.
Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) Google describes UCP as an open standard connecting consumer surfaces, businesses, and payment providers across discovery, purchase, and post-purchase support. Rollout is phased; merchant eligibility and product-data conditions apply.
Visa Trusted Agent Protocol Visa describes a way to convey agent and transaction trust signals, including agent intent, consumer recognition, and payment information, using agent-specific cryptographic signatures. Visa’s developer documentation describes the product as in development and deployment and says it may not be available in all markets.
AP2 and communication transports Google says UCP is compatible with AP2 and supports API, Agent2Agent (A2A), and Model Context Protocol (MCP) integration approaches. These are not interchangeable categories: a payment-authorization standard, a commerce protocol, and a communication transport solve different parts of the interaction.

Google has named Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target, and Walmart as UCP development collaborators, and lists Adyen, American Express, Best Buy, Flipkart, Macy’s, Mastercard, Stripe, The Home Depot, Visa, and Zalando among ecosystem supporters. Those statements indicate collaboration or support, not that every named retailer offers live agent checkout in every market.

What controls limit an agent’s authority?

In OpenAI’s described checkout flow, the user confirms each step, and the delegated payment token is constrained to a particular merchant and amount. The developer documentation adds a one-time payment request with a maximum chargeable amount and expiry. These controls limit what that payment authorization can be used for; they do not mean every agent or checkout has identical approval settings.

Visa’s Trusted Agent Protocol describes three kinds of information: Agent Intent, indicating that a trusted agent intends to retrieve details about or purchase a specified product; Consumer Recognition, conveying signals about the customer’s relationship with the merchant; and Payment Information, which may support the merchant’s preferred checkout method. Visa says the protocol is built on HTTP Message Signatures and aligned with Web Bot Auth.

Separately, Visa’s overview describes programmable payment credentials and rules—for example, which account to use, whether to apply installments or rewards, and which risk checks to trigger. It says a shopper may be asked to confirm a high-value, unusual, or otherwise sensitive transaction. These are capabilities and design intentions described by Visa, not safeguards that can be presumed in all agent systems.
