Microsoft 365 Security Explained: Defender, Entra ID, and Purview

Defender XDR coordinates threat response, Entra ID manages identity and access, and Purview protects sensitive information. Understand their roles and licensing boundaries.

Microsoft 365 security is not a single product switch. Microsoft Defender XDR coordinates threat detection and response, Microsoft Entra ID handles identity and access, and Microsoft Purview Information Protection helps find, classify, and protect sensitive information. They address different security problems and can work together, but their capabilities and licenses are not interchangeable.

Which security problem does each service address?

Question to answer Service area Primary role
How do we detect, investigate, and respond to threats across devices, identities, email, and applications? Microsoft Defender XDR Cross-product security operations and response.
Who is signing in, and should that identity be allowed access? Microsoft Entra ID Identity and access management, with risk-related capabilities available through specific licensing.
Where is sensitive information, and how should it be classified and protected? Microsoft Purview Information Protection Information discovery, classification, and protection.

What does Microsoft Defender XDR do?

It connects threat signals and response across products

Defender XDR is the security-operations layer: Microsoft describes it as coordinating detection, prevention, investigation, and response across its security products. Its overview names Defender for Endpoint, Defender for Office 365, Defender for Identity, and Defender for Cloud Apps among the products contributing signals and capabilities. See the Defender XDR overview for the product scope.

It is not a synonym for every Defender product

Defender XDR brings cross-product capabilities together; individual Defender products still address particular workloads, and their requirements can differ. For example, endpoint protection and email protection are not the same deployment simply because both use the Defender name. Check the Microsoft Defender service description for feature-level requirements rather than inferring that a broad Microsoft 365 or Defender label includes every capability.

What does Microsoft Entra ID do?

It manages identities and access

Entra ID is Microsoft’s identity and access service. It is the relevant layer when the question concerns identities, authentication, or access decisions—not the classification of a document or the investigation of a cross-workload threat.

Entra ID Protection adds identity-risk capabilities

Entra ID Protection addresses identity risks. Microsoft documents risk policies and security reports with different access by plan, and states that full functionality requires Entra ID P2. Some risk detections also use signals from Defender products, so the relevant Defender license may be needed as well. These are feature and dependency questions, not a guarantee that every Entra deployment receives every risk capability. Details are in the Entra ID Protection overview.

What does Microsoft Purview Information Protection do?

It focuses on sensitive information

Purview Information Protection supports discovering, classifying, and protecting information wherever it lives or travels. Its focus is the data itself and how it is handled, rather than the identity trying to sign in or the security team’s cross-product threat investigation. Microsoft’s Information Protection overview and solution deployment guidance describe the purpose and deployment framing.

Deployment depends on the use case

Information-protection requirements vary with the capability and configuration being used. A general statement that Purview is included in a particular Microsoft 365 plan does not establish entitlement to every Purview feature; check the service description for the exact scenario.

How do the three fit together?

Think of them as different parts of a security workflow, not three names for the same control. Entra ID governs identity and access, Purview addresses sensitive information, and Defender XDR helps security teams coordinate threat detection and response across participating products. Microsoft describes Defender XDR as using information from other Microsoft security products; that integration does not make their purposes or licensing identical.

For example, an organization designing controls around a sensitive file can consider how access is managed through Entra, how the information is classified and protected through Purview, and how relevant threat signals are investigated through Defender XDR. This is a way to map responsibilities, not a promise that every step is automatic or enabled by default.

How should you check licensing before choosing a plan?

Verify the individual capability, not just the product family

Microsoft documents Entra ID Free, P1, and P2 options and identifies subscriptions that include P1 or P2. Entra ID Protection’s full functionality requires P2, while some detections depend on licenses for the Defender products supplying their signals. Purview requirements vary by information-protection scenario. Defender capabilities may have product-level requirements and dependencies. The official references are the Entra licensing page, Entra ID Protection overview, Purview deployment guidance, and Defender service description.

Use a feature-by-feature checklist

  1. Name the security outcome. Decide whether the need is threat investigation and response, identity-risk controls, or sensitive-information protection.
  2. Identify the exact feature. A product-family name alone is not enough to establish that a specific capability is included.
  3. Check the license and dependencies. Confirm any required Entra, Defender, or Purview entitlement and any signal-producing product license.
  4. Confirm the tenant context. Check current Microsoft licensing information for the tenant, geography, and feature combination before purchasing or promising coverage.
  5. Plan deployment scope. Establish which users, workloads, and information are in scope, then follow the product’s scenario-specific deployment guidance.

Microsoft’s service descriptions are the appropriate place to confirm the current entitlement for a particular feature; a high-level plan comparison may not expose every dependency.
