Microplastics are not chemically inert beads. In water they can release manufacturing additives, shed weathering products and, under some conditions, generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) at their surfaces. How much chemistry occurs depends on the polymer, additives, particle age, pH, dissolved organic matter, light, disinfectants and contact time. That finding raises legitimate exposure concerns, but it does not mean every particle produces a poisonous dose or that human disease has been proven.
What “chemically active” means
A microplastic can affect water in several distinct ways. Chemicals blended into the plastic or attached to its surface may diffuse into the surrounding water. Sunlight and oxygen can oxidize the particle, creating new dissolved compounds and smaller fragments. Light-driven reactions can make short-lived oxidants, while a 2026 Nature study reports that some commodity microplastic–water interfaces generated ROS even without irradiation or an added oxidant.

These are different endpoints. Finding particles in a sample is not the same as measuring an additive, detecting ROS or demonstrating a biological effect. Keeping those questions separate is essential when studies appear to disagree.
How microplastics release or make chemicals
Additives and sorbed chemicals leach into water
A 2024 review of microplastics in drinking-water systems identifies oligomers, plasticizers, stabilizers and ultraviolet filters among the chemical classes that can leach. Molecules move out by diffusion and partitioning from the polymer or from material held on its surface. Bisphenols may leach more readily than some other endocrine-disrupting chemicals, but release rates vary substantially with the molecule and the environment.

Leaching is therefore not a fixed property of “a microplastic.” A fresh fragment with one formulation can behave very differently from an aged fibre made from another polymer. Higher particle concentrations and longer contact times generally provide more opportunity for transfer, while pH and dissolved organic matter can change how chemicals partition between the plastic and water.
Weathering creates new surface chemistry
Sunlight, oxygen and mechanical abrasion attack plastic surfaces. The resulting oxidation adds oxygen-containing groups, weakens the material and can produce dissolved organic carbon (DOC), volatile compounds and smaller micro- and nanoplastic fragments. The United Nations Environment Programme’s 2023 environmental-effects assessment links solar ultraviolet radiation to plastic oxidation, formation of micro- and nanoplastics, and accompanying leaching of potentially toxic compounds.

In a polypropylene photodegradation study, reported products included carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, volatile compounds and dissolved organic carbon. Separate seawater experiments with polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP) and polystyrene found oxygen-containing dissolved-organic-matter formulas, evidence that sunlight was changing the chemistry rather than merely breaking particles into smaller pieces.

Experiments with polystyrene (PS), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBAT), PE and PP found polymer-dependent dissolved organic matter. Under light, that material formed reactive intermediates: hydroxyl radicals were prominent for aromatic-polymer DOM, while singlet oxygen was prominent for aliphatic-polymer DOM. Such species can oxidize nearby organic compounds, but the experiments do not by themselves establish a harmful dose in drinking water.

A newer finding: ROS without light
The 2026 Nature study describes spontaneous ROS generation at commodity microplastic–water interfaces in the dark. The authors associated the effect with surface hydrophobicity and interfacial electrostatics, suggesting that water touching the particle can have different chemistry from bulk water.
This is an important new mechanism, not a settled exposure estimate. It still needs independent replication across polymers, realistic environmental concentrations and varied water chemistries. It should be read as evidence that light is not the only possible route to reactivity, not as proof that all household water contains dangerous ROS levels.

Why results differ from one study to another
| Factor | What changes | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Polymer and additives | Which oligomers, plasticizers, stabilizers or UV filters are available | Formulations have different chemical inventories and diffusion rates |
| Particle size, shape and age | Surface area, cracks, oxidation and attached contaminants | Older, rougher particles can expose more reactive surface |
| pH and dissolved organic matter | Partitioning, solubility and secondary reactions | The same additive can move differently in different waters |
| Light and oxygen | Photo-oxidation, DOC formation and photochemical ROS | Sunlit water can develop chemistry absent in darkness |
| Disinfectants and UV treatment | Surface degradation and release rates | Disinfection can accelerate release rather than remove every chemical |
| Contact time and concentration | Total mass transferred and reaction opportunity | Short laboratory exposures are not directly equivalent to long environmental contact |
| Analytical method | Particle counts, size cutoffs and contamination controls | Different methods can report different concentrations without either being invalid |
Particles, released chemicals and toxicity are not the same claim
There are at least four questions to ask of any headline result:
- Were particles detected? Presence depends on sampling, contamination prevention and the lower size limit. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency discusses research spanning roughly 5 millimetres to 1 nanometre and notes that chemical weathering and mechanical breakdown can create nanoplastics.
- Was a chemical released? This requires measuring a specific additive, oligomer, oxidation product or dissolved-organic-matter component in water.
- Were reactive species generated? ROS measurements indicate chemical reactivity, often over short timescales. They do not automatically indicate a persistent concentration in a person’s drinking water.
- Was biological harm demonstrated? Cell, animal and epidemiological evidence answer different questions and cannot be combined into a single risk number without exposure data.
Reviews have discussed possible endocrine, hepatic, digestive, reproductive and nervous-system effects associated with microplastics or their chemicals. The World Health Organization’s 2019 drinking-water report, however, identified major gaps in occurrence measurements, exposure estimates, toxicology and treatment performance. A 2024 review citing a global study reported microplastic fibres in as many as 83% of tap-water samples; that figure is method-dependent and is not a universal concentration for tap water.

Does boiling, filtering or disinfecting make water safer?
Boiling
Boiling can inactivate many microorganisms, but the evidence summarized here does not establish boiling as a universal way to remove microplastic particles, additives or oxidation products. Heating may also change partitioning or accelerate some chemical reactions. Treat boiling as a microbiological measure, not a proven microplastics-and-chemicals treatment.
Filtration
Filtration can reduce particles when the device, pore structure and operating conditions are appropriate. Particle removal does not guarantee removal of dissolved additives, plastic-derived DOC or ROS precursors. Performance also depends on the particle sizes a method can capture and on whether the filter itself sheds material. A certified point-of-use system may be a reasonable conditional mitigation option, but no universal household claim follows from current evidence.
Disinfection and ultraviolet treatment
UV and chemical disinfectants are valuable parts of water treatment, yet drinking-water reviews report that they can increase degradation and chemical release from particles. “Disinfected” therefore does not mean “all plastic-derived chemicals removed.” Treatment plants must evaluate particle capture and dissolved-chemical control separately.

What is established, and what remains uncertain
- Established: Microplastics can leach additives and associated compounds; weathering can create new dissolved chemistry; polymer-derived DOM can be photoreactive.
- New but not fully validated: Spontaneous dark ROS generation at plastic–water interfaces, reported in 2026.
- Not established: That every particle makes a poisonous chemical, that one treatment removes all particles and additives, or that current studies prove a specific human disease burden.
- Still needed: Standardized measurements across the microplastic-to-nanoplastic size range, realistic exposure estimates, better controls for laboratory contamination and long-term toxicology.
The practical conclusion is measured rather than dismissive: plastic particles and their weathering products can be chemically reactive, so reducing avoidable exposure and improving monitoring are sensible. The size of any health risk depends on what was released, at what concentration, for how long and by which route—questions that remain incompletely answered.
