A speaker is an output device because it turns the system’s electrical signal back into sound. An audio interface can handle both directions, but that does not change the microphone’s role.
Why a microphone is an input device
An input device sends information into a system. A microphone’s transducer converts acoustic sound into an electrical signal that can be processed, amplified, or recorded. The direction is from the sound source toward the equipment.

By contrast, a speaker receives an electrical signal from the system and produces audible sound. In a typical recording and listening setup, the path is:

- [More Function Keys] Computer microphone with headphones jack upgrades your rhythm game experience and gets feedback whether the real-time voice your audience hear as expected. Get the desired level via monitoring volume control when gaming recording. Smooth mic gain knob on the PC microphone gaming has some resistance to the point, easily for audio attenuation or boost presence to less post-production audio. (Only available for USB connection)
The microphone is the input transducer at the start of this path; speakers or headphones are output devices at the listening end. Shure’s microphone guide explains how microphones convert sound and describes characteristics such as sensitivity, impedance, and directionality. Yamaha’s sound-system overview describes the complementary microphone-input and speaker-output roles.
Why an audio interface can be both input and output
“Input” and “output” depend on which part of the system you mean. A microphone sends a signal into an interface, so it is an input device. The interface itself can receive that microphone signal and send computer audio back out for monitoring.

- [Convenient Setup] Plug and play recording USB microphone for PC, with 5.9-Foot USB cable included for computer PC laptop, is connected directly to USB-A port for recording music, computer singing or podcast. The office condenser microphone for computer is easy to use and install. (NOT compatible with Xbox and Phones)
- [Durable Metal Design] Solid sturdy metal construction design, the computer microphone for Zoom meetings with stable tripod stand is convenient when you are doing voice overs or livestreams on YouTube. Durable material extends the service life of the voice-over microphone.
- [Mic Volume Knob] Gaming condenser USB mic compatible for PS4 with additional volume knob itself has a louder or quieter adjustment and is more sensitive. Your voice would be heard well enough through the zoom microphone USB when gaming, skyping or voice recording. Also, you can adjust your volume to zero and protect your privacy.
- [Widely Use] USB-powered design, the condenser microphone for recording no need the 48v Phantom power supply, works well with Cortana, Discord, voice chat and voice recognition. The podcast microphone for Mac, with USB-B to USB-A/C cable, is compatible with desktop, laptop or PS4/PS5, which meets most of your daily recording needs.
- [Clear Output Voice] Cardioid condenser microphone for PC captures your voice properly, producing clear smooth and crisp sound. Great computer recording mic for gamers/streamers/youtubers focus on the main source and reduces background noise. The streaming microphone does the job well for broadcast ,OBS and teamspeak.
For computer recording, an interface’s microphone preamp boosts the mic-level signal, and its analog-to-digital converter turns that signal into digital audio for the computer. For playback, a digital-to-analog converter turns computer audio into an analog signal for speakers or headphones. Yamaha’s explanation of audio interfaces covers this recording and monitoring path.
Windows documentation uses another layer of terminology: the microphone is an audio endpoint, while the audio adapter’s wave-input hardware includes an analog-to-digital converter and its wave-output hardware includes a digital-to-analog converter. These are connected parts of the audio path, not interchangeable names for the microphone. See Microsoft Learn’s explanation of audio endpoint devices.

Do microphone types change the answer?
No. Dynamic and condenser describe how microphones operate, not whether their signal flows into or out of the system. Both are input devices because both capture sound and produce an electrical signal.
- Dynamic microphones: A common microphone operating principle; the mic still sends its signal toward a preamp or other receiving input.
- Condenser microphones: Another operating principle. Some condenser microphones require phantom power from compatible equipment; check the microphone and interface documentation rather than assuming every condenser uses the same power arrangement.
Other microphone characteristics—including pickup directionality, frequency response, sensitivity, impedance, and balanced or unbalanced output—affect how a microphone suits a task and connects to equipment. They do not turn an input transducer into an output device.

How to connect a microphone to the right input
- Check the microphone’s output and power needs. Consult its documentation for connector type, output level, impedance, balanced or unbalanced configuration, and whether it requires phantom power.
- Find the receiving input intended for a microphone. A microphone generally needs a mic input and preamp; a line or instrument input may serve a different signal level or purpose.
- Match the connector to the equipment. Combo jacks can accept different plug types, but the connector and input function matter. Neumann explains the distinction between XLR microphone connections and TRS line or instrument connections, as well as the need for a preamp, in its guide to connecting a microphone to an audio interface.
- Enable phantom power only when appropriate. Some microphones need it, while others do not. Confirm compatibility before switching it on.
Connector arrangements vary by product. For example, Focusrite’s Scarlett 18i20 hardware guide, updated July 16, 2026, describes XLR microphone connections through its combo inputs, jack connections for instruments and line-level signals, and 48 V phantom-power controls for specified inputs. That is guidance for that model, not a universal layout for every interface.

Quick way to tell input from output
- If the device captures sound or sends a signal into the system, it is functioning as an input device.
- If it receives a signal from the system and produces sound for listening, it is functioning as an output device.
- If a device such as an interface does both, describe its input and output functions separately; the connected microphone remains an input device.
