Micron, Samsung, and SK hynix all make memory, but their products are not interchangeable: DRAM serves as working memory, while NAND flash provides persistent storage in SSDs. Within DRAM, DDR, LPDDR, GDDR, and HBM target different platforms and workloads. The useful comparison is therefore product-family by product-family—not a single brand ranking.
First, distinguish DRAM from NAND
DRAM holds data a system is actively using; it is volatile, so its contents do not persist when power is removed. Samsung Semiconductor’s DRAM overview describes DRAM’s role and notes that SSDs mainly use nonvolatile NAND. NAND is persistent storage, commonly packaged into SSDs. A DRAM module upgrade and an SSD upgrade solve different problems.

Samsung identifies four broad DRAM families: DDR, LPDDR, GDDR, and HBM. They are designed for different platforms, rather than being alternative names for one universal kind of memory.
How the DRAM families differ
| Family | Typical role | What to compare |
|---|---|---|
| DDR | System memory in PCs, servers, and workstations | Supported DDR generation, module or package form factor, capacity, speed, and platform compatibility |
| LPDDR | Low-power memory for mobile and other power-sensitive platforms | Platform support, configuration, capacity, performance, and power behavior |
| GDDR | Graphics memory | Graphics-platform compatibility, capacity, bandwidth, and power and thermal conditions |
| HBM | Stacked high-bandwidth memory for accelerators and high-performance computing | Supported accelerator, stack configuration, bandwidth, capacity, power, and thermal design |
Samsung’s taxonomy is laid out on its DRAM page. Micron’s pages show server and data-center DRAM modules as well as HBM and LPDDR within its broader portfolio. Its DRAM modules page covers modules for servers, workstations, and data centers. A desktop DDR kit, mobile LPDDR, graphics GDDR, and accelerator HBM are not like-for-like products.

HBM and AI infrastructure
HBM is stacked DRAM built for high-bandwidth workloads such as AI training and high-performance computing. It is not a conventional DIMM that a PC user installs in a memory slot; it is part of an accelerator platform and its system design.
Samsung’s published HBM figures
Samsung’s HBM overview lists HBM3, HBM3E, and HBM4. It gives maximum specifications of up to 6.4 Gbps per pin and 819 GB/s per stack for HBM3, and up to 9.2 Gbps per pin and 1,180 GB/s per stack for HBM3E. These are Samsung-published product specifications, not independent comparative test results. Peak per-pin rates and per-stack bandwidth are also different measures, so neither should be treated as a whole-system benchmark.
Micron’s HBM and related products
Micron identifies HBM for AI and high-performance computing, alongside DDR5, LPDDR5X-based SOCAMM2, GDDR7, and data-center memory modules in its 2026 sustainability report. The report also lists HBM3E and HBM4 configurations. These are Micron-reported portfolio details; a listed family or configuration alone does not establish that a particular product is currently available to buy. Consult Micron’s memory portfolio for current product information.

What the Samsung roadmap does—and does not—establish
In an August 4, 2026 announcement at FMS, Samsung discussed HBM4E and HBM5 as roadmap items, alongside LPDDR5X-PIM, PM1763, and V10 BV-NAND. The same announcement described zHBM and zNAND-O as concept models; those concepts should not be read as shipping products. Roadmap announcements, sampling, production, and general availability are distinct stages, so confirm the status of a specific part before making a purchasing or deployment decision. See Samsung’s FMS 2026 announcement.
SK hynix’s available company overview supports describing the company as a supplier of advanced DRAM and NAND with an emphasis on AI memory. It does not provide matching, same-date HBM specifications in the source material here. That is not evidence that SK hynix lacks such products; it means a precise three-way specification ranking cannot be established from these sources.
NAND and SSD product differences
SSD comparisons concern NAND-based storage, not DRAM modules. Micron’s official pages separate client SSDs from data-center SSDs. Its data-center lineup identifies the 9650 as PCIe Gen6, the 9550 as PCIe Gen5, and the 6600 ION as a high-capacity SSD for AI, cloud, enterprise, and hyperscale workloads. Check Micron’s data-center SSD page for product details and current status.

- Tested Timings: 36-46-46-110
- Feature Overclock: XMP 3.0 & EXPO overclocking supported

Samsung organizes its SSD portfolio around PC, data-center, enterprise, and automotive uses. Its August 2026 FMS material described PM1763 as a PCIe Gen6 TLC SSD based on V9 V-NAND for AI training and inference. Samsung’s SSD portfolio and the FMS announcement provide the relevant product-category and roadmap context.
The official SK hynix overview cited above does not supply enough current SSD model detail for a fair model-by-model comparison. Verify specific SK hynix SSDs, interfaces, capacities, and availability against current product documentation rather than inferring a lineup from the company-level overview.

Start with a single family and workload. Comparing one company’s HBM peak bandwidth with another’s DDR module speed—or comparing an SSD with a DRAM module—does not answer which product is better for a given system.

- Disclaimer: Maximum Speed requires overclocking/PC BIOS adjustments. Maximum speed and performance depend on system components, including motherboard and CPU
- AMD EXPO & Intel XMP 3.0 Compatible Only: Dual memory profiles allow you to easily select optimized settings for your platform, whether you’re running an AMD or Intel processor
- Dynamic RGB Lighting: Individually addressable RGB lighting delivers vibrant effects through a sleek, understated panoramic diffuser
- Onboard Voltage Regulation: Onboard voltage regulation for reliable power at high frequencies
- Maximum Bandwidth and Tight Response Times: Optimized for peak performance on the latest AMD and Intel DDR5 motherboards
- Match the role and platform: identify whether the need is PC/server DDR, mobile LPDDR, graphics GDDR, accelerator HBM, or NAND storage.
- Compare configuration: check capacity per module, package, or stack, and the configuration supported by the target system.
- Use comparable performance measures: compare bandwidth, transfer rate, interface, latency, and workload results only when the conditions and measurement units align.
- Account for power and thermals: platform design and workload affect both; vendor specifications alone may not describe behavior under a reader’s operating conditions.
- Verify status and cost: availability and price change, and no consistent three-company price comparison is established here. Distinguish a roadmap item from a released product.
Manufacturer specifications are useful for narrowing candidates, but they are not neutral head-to-head tests. A real comparison needs matched products, comparable configurations, consistent test conditions, and results for the workload that matters.
Are the brands interchangeable for a PC upgrade?
No blanket compatibility claim applies across brands. For a desktop or laptop memory upgrade, first identify the system’s supported DDR generation, form factor, capacity limits, and other platform requirements. A DDR5 desktop kit is relevant only if the motherboard and processor support it; LPDDR and HBM are not substitutes for a standard desktop DIMM. For storage, check the system’s SSD interface and physical format separately.
What the available product evidence can support
Samsung’s official pages provide a clear DRAM-family taxonomy, HBM specifications, and SSD categories. Micron’s pages distinguish DRAM modules, HBM, and client and data-center SSDs, with several named data-center drives. The available SK hynix overview supports its broad position in advanced DRAM, NAND, and AI memory, but not a fully matched model-level comparison across all three. No common market-share, shipment, revenue, price, or independent benchmark evidence establishes an overall winner.
