Conditional yes. If you disliked the ending but are still interested in the characters, the gameplay, or the story’s attempt to make you see events from more than one perspective, the rest of the experience may be worth revisiting. But playing more will not unlock a happier or alternate ending. If the ending’s outcome itself is the deal-breaker, you may remain dissatisfied.

What did you dislike about the ending?
Your reason matters more than any overall rating. A reaction to the outcome is different from frustration with the pacing or with the game asking you to spend substantial time in another character’s perspective.
If you wanted a different outcome
Ellie spares Abby in the final confrontation. If what you wanted was a decisive revenge payoff, the released ending does not provide it. There is no later chapter or alternate ending that reverses that choice.
#1 Best Overall
Reporting on interviews with creative director Neil Druckmann and narrative lead Halley Gross says the developers considered a darker ending in which Ellie killed Abby before choosing the version that was released. That context shows the outcome was a considered creative choice; it does not prove that the choice works for every player. GameSpot’s report on the ending covers that development discussion.
If the perspective shift or pacing lost you
The story moves between Ellie and Abby, asking you to inhabit a perspective that may feel unwelcome after the events that begin the game. The developers have described the shift and the ending as deliberate parts of the story’s design. You can understand that intention and still feel that the transition is too long, poorly paced, or unconvincing. GameSpot’s interview report on the perspective shift offers more context.
If that structure was your main frustration, the question is whether you valued the character journeys and play enough to accept the route the game takes. A second playthrough may make the structure easier to follow, but there is no guarantee it will change your opinion or make the ending feel earned.

- Enhanced visuals: Completely rebuilt from the ground up using Naughty Dog’s latest PS5 engine technology to improve every visual detail, The Last of Us experience has been faithfully enhanced with more realistic lighting and atmosphere, more intricate environments and creative reimaginings of familiar spaces.
- Fast loading: Initial loading times are near instant, and seamless after the first instance thanks to the PS5 console’s SSD – so you can pick up where you left off in the story and load specific encounters and chapters more quickly.
- Haptic feedback: DualSense wireless controller haptic feedback support for every weapon elevates combat encounters, and environments are brought to life through DualSense wireless controller haptic sensations of subtle falling rain, the crunch of stepping on snow and more.
- Adaptive triggers: All The Last of Us iconic weapons, including Joel’s revolver and Ellie’s bow, now deliver dynamic DualSense wireless controller trigger resistance and kickback on firing for deeper combat immersion.
- 3D Audio: Designed to make use of the PS5 console’s Tempest 3D AudioTech, Naughty Dog’s newly upgraded audio engine delivers richer soundscapes, bigger explosive moments and more visceral gameplay through compatible stereo headphones (analogue or USB) or TV speakers.
If the emotional tone was the problem
The game remains grim and demanding rather than turning toward a comforting resolution. If you wanted the ending to relieve that weight, more time with the story is unlikely to be the reason to return. If you can accept a bleak emotional register, the journey may still matter to you even if the final choice does not.
Do other players agree about the ending?
Responses are divided. PlayStation Store reviews include praise for the story and gameplay alongside complaints about pacing and story choices; critic reviews on Metacritic also include both positive and negative appraisals.
The PlayStation Store displayed an average of 4.53 stars from 304,736 ratings when accessed in 2026. That is a changing store snapshot, not a poll about the ending: it cannot tell you whether you, specifically, will accept the final outcome. The PlayStation Store listing shows the current rating and player comments.

Is there more to the game than the ending?
Yes, but the extras do not change the story. Sony describes The Last of Us Part II Remastered as adding graphical enhancements, DualSense integration, accessibility features, and modes including No Return, Lost Levels, and Guitar Free Play. Those may add value if you want more time in the game’s world or systems, but they are not an alternate conclusion. PlayStation’s official Remastered page lists the edition’s features.
Which edition should you play?
PlayStation currently lists The Last of Us Part II Remastered for PS5 and PC. If you already own the PS4 original, the relevant choice may be whether to use the PS5 upgrade path or continue with your existing edition; the upgrade is not a way to change the story.
| Edition | Platform and features | Upgrade information |
|---|---|---|
| The Last of Us Part II (original) | PS4 edition. The official Remastered page does not state the original edition’s feature details in the cited product information. | PS4 owners may have a path to the PS5 Remastered edition; eligibility and regional terms should be checked on PlayStation’s page. |
| The Last of Us Part II Remastered | PS5 and PC. Sony lists graphical enhancements, No Return, Lost Levels, Guitar Free Play, DualSense integration, and accessibility additions. | For a PS4 disc copy, a PS5 with a disc drive is required; the disc must be inserted to download or play the PS5 digital upgrade. Check PlayStation’s page for current regional terms. |
Prices and promotions vary by region and change over time, so check your local PlayStation Store rather than relying on an old price. Edition features may make a return more appealing, but they should not be mistaken for a different story ending.
