Micron, SoftBank and ASML Slide as Chip-Sector Selloff Spreads

A chip-sector selloff crossed markets on October 12–13, with different sessions, distinct company risks and fresh questions about AI demand and competition.

A semiconductor selloff crossed markets on October 12–13, 2026, but the reported share moves came in different sessions: Micron fell 3.9% in Monday U.S. trading, while SoftBank dropped 8.5% in Tuesday Tokyo trading. A wider fall in South Korean chip shares reflected concern about competition from Chinese memory maker CXMT and uncertainty over AI spending, profits and financing. The available reports do not establish a verified October 13 percentage decline for ASML.

What fell, and when?

The declines were part of a cross-market move, not a single synchronized Wall Street session. The Associated Press reported Micron Technology down 3.9% at the U.S. close on Monday, October 12. On Tuesday, October 13, AP reported SoftBank Group down 8.5% in Tokyo trading. Reuters’ contemporaneous snapshot put SoftBank about 8% lower, so the 8.5% figure is best understood as AP’s report of that session rather than a universal closing figure.

Market or company Reported move Session and context
Micron Technology Down 3.9% Monday, October 12, U.S. close, as reported by AP
SoftBank Group Down 8.5% Tuesday, October 13, Tokyo trading, as reported by AP; Reuters described it as about 8% lower in a contemporaneous snapshot
Kospi Down 5.5% to 6,035.35 Tuesday, October 13; AP said it had fallen more than 7% intraday
Samsung Electronics Down 7.4% Tuesday, October 13, according to AP
SK Hynix Down 10.1% Tuesday, October 13, according to AP
S&P 500 Down 0.1% Monday, October 12, according to AP
Nasdaq Composite Down 0.4% Monday, October 12, according to AP
Dow Jones Industrial Average Up 0.4% Monday, October 12, according to AP
ASML October 13 percentage change not verified The cited material does not provide a reliable same-session figure

The South Korean losses show the scale of pressure on regional semiconductor shares, but they are not a direct proxy for any single U.S. stock. Monday’s U.S. index moves were mixed and relatively modest: the S&P 500 was down 0.1%, while the Dow rose 0.4%. That is evidence of a technology-led pullback, not a broad-market crash. Why are memory-chip shares under pressure?

The immediate reported catalyst was news that China’s ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) had made progress on a DRAM architecture intended to increase memory density. Reports said investors worried this could eventually challenge incumbent suppliers including Micron, Samsung and SK Hynix. That is a concern about competitive potential—not evidence in the cited coverage that CXMT has achieved production yields, customer qualification, shipment volumes or commercial displacement at scale.

For investors, the distinction matters: a technical advance can raise the prospect of future competition without immediately changing suppliers’ current sales or margins. The reports establish market anxiety about the possibility, but do not quantify how likely or how soon displacement might be. (AP; The Guardian; Bloomberg, republished by Livemint)

Why did the selloff reach beyond memory makers?

Coverage framed the CXMT news as one trigger within a wider reassessment of the AI trade. Investors were questioning how quickly AI demand can grow, how long exceptional profits and margins can last, and whether the capital being spent on AI infrastructure will generate durable returns. Bloomberg’s report also pointed to concern about financing the buildout and higher interest rates affecting debt-funded deals.

Reuters quoted Charu Chanana, chief investment strategist at Saxo, saying the CXMT news appeared to be a clear trigger for memory-stock selling, while the bigger story was that investors were becoming “much less forgiving of the AI trade.” Her explanation is an interpretation of investor behavior, not proof that a single factor caused each company’s share-price move. The uncertainty is not simply whether AI is being adopted. It is whether earnings will justify the scale of expectations and investment. AP reported that U.S. indexes remained near records on Monday even as large technology shares declined. Magdalena Ocampo, market strategist at Principal Asset Management, said AI continues to support growth but that uncertainty about its long-term impact makes future gains more dependent on earnings delivery than potential. Why the three companies do not share one risk

Micron, ASML and SoftBank have different businesses, so a common market selloff does not mean investors were pricing the same company-specific risk in each stock.

Company Business exposure Risk highlighted in the reports
Micron Memory-chip producer Competition concerns after reports of CXMT’s DRAM architecture progress, alongside questions about AI demand and memory-sector margins
ASML Semiconductor equipment maker Investors look to orders and company guidance for information about chipmaking demand; Q3 results were due shortly after the selloff
SoftBank Group Investment company with AI exposure; identified in the coverage as an OpenAI investor Broader unease about AI spending, financing and returns; the cited reports do not provide a comparable, fully sourced breakdown of portfolio exposure

The evidence does not support treating SoftBank as a memory-chip manufacturer or assuming its Tuesday fall was caused by the CXMT development in the same direct way as memory suppliers’ declines. Nor does it establish that ASML’s share move on October 13 matched those of Micron or SoftBank. (AP; The Guardian; Bloomberg, republished by Livemint; ASML investor relations)

What to watch in ASML’s results

ASML’s official investor-relations calendar scheduled its Q3 2026 results release for Wednesday, October 14 at 07:00 CET, followed by an investor call at 15:00 CET. The results and guidance could provide information on orders and demand across the semiconductor equipment market. They were a near-term information point, not a reliable signal in advance of whether the shares would rise or fall.

The cited material does not verify an October 13 ASML percentage decline. Avoid comparing an unsupported figure with the documented session moves in Micron, SoftBank or South Korean shares. (ASML quarterly results calendar)

Quick Recap

What remains uncertain

  • The production scale, yield, timeline and customer uptake of CXMT’s reported DRAM architecture progress are not established in the cited coverage.
  • The reports do not provide a statistical estimate of the likelihood that CXMT will displace established suppliers.
  • They do not settle whether AI infrastructure spending will produce durable returns or whether current demand and margins will persist.
  • A reliable October 13 ASML share-change figure is not available in the cited material.
