LPCAMM2 is removable, upgradeable LPDDR5X memory—but it does not fit a standard SODIMM slot. A laptop must be designed specifically for LPCAMM2. The format pairs low-power memory with a modular package, offering an alternative to soldered LPDDR in compatible systems. The headline’s “replacing SODIMMs” refers to a different laptop memory option, not a drop-in replacement for SODIMM modules.
What is LPCAMM2 RAM?
LPCAMM2 is a compact module format for LPDDR5X memory. Unlike LPDDR soldered directly to a laptop’s motherboard, an LPCAMM2 module can be removed and replaced in a system built to support it. Micron says one module supports dual-channel memory. Its physical and electrical design is distinct from SODIMM, so the format combines some of the serviceability of modular memory with LPDDR5X rather than turning LPDDR5X into a conventional SODIMM. Micron’s LPCAMM2 product page describes the format and its capabilities.

Can LPCAMM2 replace SODIMM RAM?
It can serve as a laptop maker’s alternative to SODIMM memory, but it cannot be installed in an ordinary SODIMM socket. The laptop needs an LPCAMM2 connector and explicit firmware and platform support. Do not buy an LPCAMM2 module for a laptop just because its existing memory is removable, or buy a SODIMM as a substitute for LPCAMM2.

That was a historical report, not a complete or current compatibility list. Read ServeTheHome’s 2024 report.

How fast is LPCAMM2, and what capacities are available?
Published speed figures differ by date and product context, and they should not be treated as a guaranteed operating speed for every module or laptop.
| Source and date | Reported capability | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| ServeTheHome, May 2024 | Up to 7,500 MT/s; first-generation capacities of 32GB and 64GB | Report on the initial LPCAMM2 products and compatible systems. Source. |
| Micron, May 2024 | Up to 7,500 MT/s; Crucial modules in 32GB and 64GB capacities | Manufacturer launch announcement. Source. |
| Micron, September 2025 | Up to 8,533 MT/s; densities up to 64GB | Manufacturer announcement for Crucial LPCAMM2. Source. |
| Micron product page, currently viewed | Up to 9,600 Mb/s | Capability displayed on the product page; it does not establish that a particular module and laptop reach that rate. Source. |
MT/s and Mb/s are the units used in those respective source materials; the figures come from different announcements and contexts. A headline maximum is not a promise that every configuration runs at that rate. Check the specifications for both the exact module and laptop. A higher stated data rate by itself also does not show how much faster a specific application will run.

What are LPCAMM2’s space and power advantages?
Micron’s current product page claims up to 64% less volume than a commercially available dual-stacked DDR5 SODIMM module: its comparison gives 11,934 mm³ for LPCAMM2 versus 32,808 mm³ for the SODIMM. This is a module-volume comparison, not a claim that the whole laptop becomes 64% smaller.

Its page’s footnote describes power measurements in milliwatts per 64-bit bus at the same LPDDR5X speed as SODIMM. These are manufacturer comparisons under stated measurement conditions, not guaranteed savings in every laptop. See Micron’s product-page specifications.

Do Micron’s performance claims mean every laptop will be faster?
No. In its January 9, 2024 announcement, Micron reported up to 71% better PCMark 10 essentials workload performance, up to 7% better digital-content-creation performance, and up to 15% better productivity performance in its comparisons. Those are vendor-reported workload results, not independent test findings or a prediction of improvement in every application. The announcement does not make these percentages universal outcomes. Which laptops support LPCAMM2?
Support is model- and configuration-specific. Micron’s 2024 materials named the Lenovo ThinkPad P1 Gen 7; its September 2025 announcement referred to select Lenovo and Dell next-generation mobile workstations. These examples do not constitute an exhaustive current list. Micron describes Crucial LPCAMM2 as compatible only with select laptops. Micron’s 2024 compatibility announcement and its 2025 announcement give the dated examples.

Before ordering, verify all of the following in the laptop maker’s specifications or service documentation:
- The complete model name and generation support LPCAMM2—not merely removable memory.
- The configuration accepts the module’s capacity.
- The system supports the module’s stated data rate; the laptop may set a lower limit.
- The upgrade procedure is supported for that system, including any required access or service steps.
Can you upgrade a ThinkPad P1 Gen 7 to 64GB LPCAMM2?
ServeTheHome’s May 2024 report identified the ThinkPad P1 Gen 7 as the first compatible laptop and described first-generation 32GB and 64GB capacities. Micron’s May 2024 launch materials also named 32GB and 64GB Crucial LPCAMM2 modules. That historical evidence supports the model as an early LPCAMM2 example, but it does not confirm that every P1 Gen 7 configuration accepts every module or establishes current availability. Check Lenovo’s specifications and service guidance for the exact machine before buying or attempting an upgrade.

What to check before buying LPCAMM2
- Confirm the laptop format. Check the exact model and configuration for LPCAMM2 support. A standard SODIMM socket is not compatible.
- Match capacity and rate. Confirm the module’s capacity and data rate against the laptop’s supported specifications.
- Check the service procedure. Use the laptop maker’s guidance to determine whether and how the module can be replaced.
- Compare the actual upgrade path. Consider the system’s installed memory, supported module options, and whether a compatible module is available for your configuration. A speed claim alone does not establish a worthwhile real-world performance gain.
