Micron CEO Warns Memory Supply Will Tighten in 2027 and 2028

Micron says memory supply-demand conditions may tighten in 2027 and 2028, with the reported figures focused on its HBM and memory business—not global retail PC RAM.

Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra says memory and storage supply-demand conditions are expected to be tighter in calendar years 2027 and 2028 than in 2026. The warning centers on Micron’s business-to-business memory products, especially high-bandwidth memory (HBM) for AI systems and DRAM for servers. It does not establish that retail PC RAM will be scarce or that consumer prices will rise by a particular amount.

Will RAM shortages get worse in 2027?

According to Ars Technica’s October 1, 2026 report on Micron’s earnings call, Mehrotra expects supply-demand conditions to tighten in 2027 and 2028 compared with 2026. He said, “Overall, supply-demand environment is only getting tighter.” That is a relative outlook, not a quantified forecast of how many memory chips will be unavailable or how long a shortage will last.

The report says approximately 75 percent of Micron’s memory output for 2027 was already accounted for. It also reports that a large part of the company’s 2027 HBM volume had sold out at prices “much higher than 2026 prices.” Both figures describe Micron’s business, not the global memory market as a whole. The HBM price comparison is relative; no absolute price was given.

Why is Micron warning about a memory shortage?

Demand for AI memory and server DRAM

The call remarks concern a market where demand for HBM used in AI systems and DRAM used in servers is significant. Those products serve different roles from the DIMMs or other modules installed in consumer PCs. Capacity and demand in one category can influence investment and allocation across a manufacturer’s operations, but the products are not interchangeable units of retail PC RAM.

CORSAIR Vengeance LPX DDR4 RAM 32GB (2x16GB) Up to 3200MHz CL16-20-20-38 1.35V Intel XMP AMD EXPO Computer Memory – Black (CMK32GX4M2E3200C16)
  • Disclaimer: Maximum Speed requires overclocking/PC BIOS adjustments. Maximum speed and performance depend on system components, including motherboard and CPU
  • Hand-sorted memory chips ensure high performance with generous overclocking headroom
  • VENGEANCE LPX is optimized for wide compatibility with the latest Intel and AMD DDR4 motherboards
  • A low-profile height of just 34mm ensures that VENGEANCE LPX even fits in most small-form-factor builds
  • A solid aluminum heatspreader efficiently dissipates heat from each module so that they consistently run at high clock speeds

New capacity takes time to contribute

Ars Technica reports that Micron’s new clean-room capacity will ramp gradually rather than adding full production immediately, alongside other supply headwinds. A planned or newly available clean room is therefore not the same as a sudden increase in finished memory output.

What do Micron’s results confirm—and what don’t they?

Micron announced its fiscal fourth-quarter and full-year 2026 results on September 30, 2026, and said its fiscal year ended September 3. The company reported fiscal 2026 revenue of $133.19 billion and identified AI-driven demand as a major contributor. Those are company-reported financial results; they provide business context but do not independently verify a future shortage. The official results release does not contain the reported shortage quotations or the 75 percent figure.

Will the memory shortage affect PC RAM prices?

It could affect consumer memory indirectly if manufacturers prioritize capacity for higher-demand products or customers. Ars Technica describes consumer-device effects as a possible spillover, not a confirmed retail outcome. The available reporting does not give a forecast for desktop or laptop RAM prices, a projected stock level, or a date when consumer supply might normalize.
