Neither tool is documented as a universal quality or speed winner. The right choice depends on whether you want managed capture and delivery or control over your own browser workflow.
How Microlink takes a screenshot
Microlink’s API accepts a target url and a screenshot option. Its guide says a default capture can use screenshot: true; an options object can customize the capture. Microlink opens a headless browser, renders the page, captures the current viewport, stores the image on its CDN, and returns an asset URL with metadata. The screenshot URL is in data.screenshot.url; metadata can include type, size, width, and height. See the Microlink screenshot guide for current request syntax and options.
This flow is useful when an application can hand off a URL and then use or store the returned hosted asset. It also means the capture and image delivery are part of a service rather than a browser process your team runs itself.
How Playwright saves a screenshot
Playwright captures a page through its screenshot API. Its documented example saves an image to a local path:

- Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
- Auto-Light Balance: RightLight boosts brightness by up to 50%, reducing shadows so you look your best—compared to previous-generation Logitech webcams (1)
- Privacy with a Slide: The integrated webcam cover makes it easy to get total, reliable privacy when you're not on a video call

- Easy Plug-And-Play: The Brio 101 works with most video calling platforms, including Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google Meet—no hassle; it just works
await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png' });
That call assumes you already have a Playwright page in a running browser context. The path is where your code writes the output, so your application or job is responsible for managing the resulting file and any later hosting or delivery. Playwright documents full-page screenshots as well as API parameters for image format, clip area, and quality. Consult the Playwright screenshot guide and Page screenshot API for the current API details.
Playwright’s screenshot documentation cautions: “Screenshots are for looking at, not for acting on — use browser_snapshot to get refs to interact with.” In practical terms, an image helps with visual inspection; use the browser’s structural snapshot and interaction facilities when automation needs to identify and operate page elements.

Microlink vs Playwright: the practical differences
| Consideration | Microlink | Playwright |
|---|---|---|
| Operating model | Hosted API/SDK workflow; Microlink runs the headless-browser capture and hosts the returned image. This distinction is based on the tools’ documentation. | Browser automation library; your code runs the browser workflow and decides where to save or deliver the capture. |
| Output handling | Returns a screenshot asset URL and metadata such as image type, size, width, and height. | The documented example writes the image to a path you choose. |
| Capture area | Guide covers current-viewport and full-page capture, plus selecting an element with a CSS selector. | Docs cover full-page capture and screenshot API options such as a clip area. |
| Page and browser control | Documentation links to browser settings and page-interaction guides; confirm the exact controls you need in the current documentation. | Provides a programmable browser-automation environment; confirm the specific page preparation and emulation controls against the current API documentation. |
| Operations to own | Your integration calls a managed service and handles its response. | Your system runs and maintains the browser automation workflow and handles output files. |
This is a workflow comparison drawn from official documentation, not a head-to-head test. The available documentation does not establish that either tool produces universally better images or captures pages faster.
Which one should you use?
Choose Microlink when managed capture and hosted delivery matter
- You want to submit a URL and receive a screenshot asset URL rather than operate a browser process in your own capture infrastructure.
- Your workflow benefits from Microlink returning image metadata alongside the asset.
- You are comfortable checking a vendor’s current quota, plan details, and service terms before committing.
Choose Playwright when the capture belongs inside your automation code
- You need to integrate capture into an application, test, or job that already uses Playwright.
- You want to control the browser workflow in code and determine where the screenshot file is written.
- Your needs involve screenshot API parameters such as full-page capture or a clipped area, and the documented controls meet your requirements.
Check capture scope and preparation before deciding
Do not assume the options are interchangeable. Compare the current documentation for the exact viewport, full-page or element/clip capture, timing, interactions, device emulation, and page setup your use case requires. Microlink’s guide documents CSS-selector element capture; Playwright’s screenshot API documents clip-area options. Both document full-page capture, but that alone does not establish feature parity across all other controls.

What to know about Microlink’s quota, speed, and service claims
- Microlink’s screenshot guide currently says its no-key quota is 25 requests per day. The guide does not state a publication year, and quotas can change; check the live guide before relying on this limit.
- Microlink’s product page advertises a screenshot P95 of 2.8 seconds. This is a vendor-published claim, not an independent measurement or a comparison with Playwright.
- The same product page associates a 99.9% SLA with paid plans. Confirm the current terms and scope on Microlink’s live page before using that figure in a service decision.
These claims do not predict the performance or reliability of a particular page capture. No independent benchmark in the cited material establishes a winner between the tools. Check current plan and service terms on Microlink’s pricing page.
