The shift changes the reported form of his bearish bet—not what anyone can conclude about Nvidia’s future. The details come from news reports, while Scion Asset Management’s latest identified SEC filing covers holdings as of September 30, 2025, not Burry’s current portfolio.
What changed in Burry’s reported Nvidia bet?
The Motley Fool reported on September 17, 2026, that Burry had sold all of his Nvidia puts expiring in December while maintaining a short position in Nvidia. TheStreet had earlier reported, on August 5, 2026, that he added to that short at a reported price of $210.28. Those are outlet-reported trade details; they do not establish the exact size or terms of the position he held on October 3, 2026.
The distinction matters: selling puts and keeping a short position are not the same as exiting a bearish view. But without verified contract details and current position data, the reports do not tell readers the full size, cost, timing, or eventual result of Burry’s exposure.
What does the SEC filing actually show?
Scion Asset Management’s Form 13F, filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on November 3, 2025, reports holdings for the quarter ended September 30, 2025. It identifies Michael J. Burry as the firm’s CEO and signer. A 13F is a dated disclosure, not a live account feed, so it cannot confirm what he held months later. Read Scion’s SEC information table.

The filing’s reported information-table value was $1,381,198,076. That is a summary value of reported holdings—not the amount of cash Burry risked, and not a complete measure of every kind of exposure. The Washington Post’s account of the filing described $186.58 million in Nvidia put exposure and $912 million in Palantir put exposure; those reported values are not premiums paid or current positions. How do puts differ from a short position?
A long put gives its buyer the right, but not the obligation, to sell an asset at a specified strike price before or at an expiry, depending on the contract. A buyer can lose the premium paid if the option expires worthless; the payoff also depends on the strike, premium, expiry, and any sale before expiry. The available reports do not establish the strike prices or premiums for Burry’s Nvidia puts, so they do not support a calculation of his potential profit or loss.

A short position generally involves selling borrowed shares and later buying shares to return them. The short seller benefits if the share price falls, before costs, but faces potentially large losses if it rises. A put and a short can both express a bearish view, yet their costs, risks, and time limits differ. The label “short” in a report alone does not reveal all the details of Burry’s exposure.
What is the reported reason for the bearish view?
TheStreet described Burry’s concerns about how AI infrastructure is financed and how computing equipment is depreciated. These are arguments attributed to Burry, not established findings that Nvidia’s accounting is improper or that demand for its products is false. Investors should separate a thesis about industry economics from verified evidence about a company’s financial reporting and business outlook.

In an October 30, 2025 X post quoted by The Washington Post, Burry wrote: “Sometimes, we see bubbles. Sometimes, there is something to do about it. Sometimes, the only winning move is not to play.” The Post also reported that he objected to coverage of 13F filings, replying: “Fake news! I am not 5’6” (not that there is anything wrong with that). And journalists reporting on 13Fs, none more fake.” The remarks are context, not a substitute for current, independently verified position data. - The information is time-stamped. The SEC filing reflects September 30, 2025; later trade details are reported by news outlets. Neither establishes Burry’s exact current exposure.
- The instruments have different risks. A put’s value depends on contract terms and expiry; a short share position has a different loss profile. The public details cited here are not enough to reconstruct Burry’s trade.
- One investor’s thesis is not a personal recommendation. A report about Burry cannot determine whether a trade suits another person’s goals, risk tolerance, or ability to trade options.
- A bearish position is not proof of a coming decline. It expresses exposure or a view; its outcome depends on what happens next and on the position’s terms.
Burry became widely known for his earlier mortgage-market trade, described in Michael Lewis’s book The Big Short. That history explains why investors pay attention to his trades, but it does not make a past call a reliable guide to a different company or market.
