Miami has been named one of the U.S. cities with the worst restaurant reservation no-show problems, according to a Miami New Times report summarized by The Miami on October 1, 2026. The accessible summary does not give Miami’s exact rank, the cities compared, a measured Miami no-show rate, or the study method, so it supports a reported ranking—not a verified citywide statistic.

What the report says—and what it does not establish

The Miami summary credits Olee Fowler and says the story was first published by Miami New Times. It describes Miami as one of the worst U.S. cities for people failing to show up for restaurant reservations, with the knock-on effect of harming restaurants. The summary characterizes itself as automated, and the original Miami New Times page was unavailable to the reporting source.

That leaves key details unknown: Miami’s position in the ranking, which cities were included, how no-shows were defined, the time period measured, and the data source or calculation. Without those details, the claim should be read as a reported comparison rather than a measured rate for Miami restaurants as a whole.

The Miami’s October 1, 2026 summary and the linked Miami New Times story are the cited accounts.

Why a no-show matters to a restaurant

A reservation sets aside a table and expected service capacity. If a party does not arrive and has not canceled, the restaurant may lose the chance to offer that table to someone else. The consequences depend on the venue’s size, demand, timing, and ability to refill the booking; the available reporting does not quantify a citywide financial loss for Miami.

A striking example is not the same as a city estimate. A secondary roundup attributes to OpenTable an account that Miami restaurant Phuc Yea’s no-show rate could reach 50% on a bad night. It also describes one night with 17 no-shows among 70 seats—24.3% of the seats. Those figures concern a particular venue and occasion, not Miami restaurants generally.

How the available no-show figures compare

Different figures describe different samples and outcomes. None of the following establishes Miami’s citywide rate.

Figure What it measures Geography and qualification
2.33% overall; 3.17% in the U.S. subset Resos No-Show Index data reported for 3.77 million reservations at 2,417 restaurants, August 1, 2025–July 31, 2026. Overall and U.S. subset, respectively; reported by Resos in 2026 through the secondary roundup. Not Miami-specific.
16% lower recorded no-show rate Reservations with a delivered SMS reminder compared with those without in the Resos dataset. Dataset observation reported in 2026, not evidence that reminders caused the difference or a guaranteed result for a restaurant.
17 no-shows among 70 seats (24.3%) One Phuc Yea example attributed by the roundup to OpenTable. One venue and one night; cited as an OpenTable report from 2020, not a city estimate.
28% of 1,326 adults U.S. adults who said they had not shown up for a reservation in the past year. Self-reported national survey commissioned by OpenTable and conducted by YouGov on April 19–20, 2021. It measures people’s reported behavior, not restaurant booking records; a roundup notes another outlet rendered it as 30%.

The Resos figures and survey details are reported in Brief First’s restaurant no-show roundup. The roundup identifies the OpenTable/YouGov survey release as OpenTable’s June 17, 2021 “Show Up for Restaurants” announcement.

Do cancellations count as no-shows?

No. A party that cancels before service has given the restaurant a chance—sometimes a short one—to refill the table. A true no-show is a reservation party that does not arrive and has not canceled. The distinction matters when comparing rates: platform figures for cancellations should not be relabeled as no-shows.

What restaurants can do about missed reservations

There is no universal fix, and the available evidence does not show that any one policy will produce a particular reduction. Restaurants can choose measures according to their own booking patterns, guest expectations, and ability to manage payments and communications.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
  • Send reminders and make cancellation simple. Reminders can prompt guests to confirm plans; an easy cancellation route lets a restaurant try to refill a table. The Resos dataset associated delivered SMS reminders with a 16% lower recorded no-show rate, but that association does not establish a causal effect. A confirmation prompt was described as near-neutral in the same roundup.
  • Use a waitlist. An online or staff-managed waitlist can help fill a released table, though it cannot guarantee a replacement party at the right time.
  • Consider card holds, deposits, or prepayment selectively. These approaches can add accountability, especially for high-demand bookings or prepaid experiences, but add guest friction and payment-handling work. The roundup describes its deposit/protection comparison as descriptive, not causal evidence of effectiveness.
  • Choose reservation software around the actual workflow. Compare whether a system supports reminders, cancellation links, waitlists, card holds, deposits, or prepayment, along with fees and payment terms. The roundup names OpenTable, Resy, Tock, Toast Tables, and Yelp Guest Manager as services in this category; it is not an independent software evaluation, and provider terms can change.

A sensible starting point is for a restaurant to track its own no-shows separately from advance cancellations, by service and booking type. That establishes whether the issue is frequent enough to justify more restrictive policies and whether a change is improving the venue’s own results.
