A Metroidbrainia usually opens progress when you learn something: a rule, clue, or fact that changes what you understand about the world. Both rely on exploration and discovery, and a game can use both approaches.
What separates a Metroidbrainia from a Metroidvania?
The key is what gets you past a gate. In a Metroidvania, a physical obstacle typically requires a capability you have not yet acquired. In a Metroidbrainia, the challenge typically becomes solvable once you understand something about the game’s rules, clues, or world. The new key is a tool in one pattern and knowledge in the other.

Bandai Namco’s 2025 overview describes Metroidvanias as side-scrolling 2D action games built around map exploration, acquired abilities, gated progression, and backtracking. A narrower description from Tom Happ, creator of Axiom Verge, similarly emphasizes a continuous map, obstacles, required items, and backtracking. Bandai Namco’s overview and Distant Meadows’ discussion of Metroidbrainias make the contrast useful: one stresses acquiring capabilities, while the other stresses learning and applying information.
| Question | Metroidvania pattern | Metroidbrainia pattern |
|---|---|---|
| What is the key? | An acquired item, ability, or movement capability. | Information, understanding, or recognition of a rule. |
| What does a gate ask of you? | Find or gain the capability needed to cross a blocked route. | Understand a fact, clue, or mechanism that makes a challenge solvable. |
| Why return to a place? | A newly acquired tool can open a route that was inaccessible. | New knowledge can reveal how to act or change what a place means. |
| What does exploration emphasize? | Navigating an interconnected map, collecting abilities, and backtracking. | Experimenting, interpreting clues, and recognizing how the world works. |
How progression feels different
Metroidvania: acquire a capability, then use it
A typical Metroidvania loop is to explore, encounter an obstacle you cannot yet pass, find an upgrade elsewhere, and return with the ability to overcome it. The map gives the player a tangible record of unfinished routes. Progress often expands both the character’s abilities and the areas they can physically reach.

Metroidbrainia: understand something, then apply it
A Metroidbrainia may give the player the actions they need early on. Progress depends on working out when, where, or why to use them—or on interpreting a clue or rule that had been available but not understood. Returning to an earlier location can change its meaning without changing the character’s inventory.
Kate Gray of Nintendo Life captures the distinction as a door-and-key metaphor: “A MetroidBrainia gates progress until you have the right key for the right door. In this case, though, the key is not physical… it’s mental.” That mental key might be a deduction, a remembered clue, or a newly understood world rule.

What counts as a Metroidbrainia?
The term is informal, not a universally enforced genre label. Nintendo Life noted that it was not mainstream and traced an early use to Nick Suttner in 2015. A 2025 DiGRA extended abstract examines the term through Animal Well, distinguishing tangible obstacles that require abilities or items from more abstract challenges solved through knowledge. Together, these uses make “Metroidbrainia” a helpful way to describe a progression pattern, not a strict checklist every game must pass.
That looseness matters because knowledge-driven progression comes in different forms: a player might solve a puzzle, interpret a clue, or learn a rule about how the world works. Some games blend these mental challenges with conventional ability gates. It is more accurate to describe what a particular game asks the player to learn or acquire than to treat the two labels as mutually exclusive boxes.

Examples of knowledge-driven progression
Nintendo Life names Return of the Obra Dinn, Fez, Her Story, and Outer Wilds when discussing knowledge-driven progression. These examples illustrate the kinds of discovery associated with the term; they do not establish that all four share one complete genre definition. The useful question is whether understanding—not simply obtaining a new capability—is what lets the player move forward.

How to tell which pattern a game uses
- Look at the blocker. If a route requires a new movement power or item, that is a Metroidvania-style gate. If you can proceed after figuring out a clue, rule, or mechanism, that is a Metroidbrainia-style gate.
- Check what changed when you made progress. A new tool points toward capability-based progression; a new understanding points toward knowledge-based progression.
- Allow for a blend. A game can have an interconnected map and backtracking while also making important progress depend on deductions or learned rules.
