The right restart or menu steps depend on the TV platform: the instructions below for Fire TV Smart TVs do not necessarily apply to Insignia Roku TVs or other models.
First, identify what is and is not working
Before changing settings, check whether the TV powers on and whether its own menus appear. These clues help separate a TV-wide problem from an issue with one connected device.

- No indicator light or the TV will not turn on: Begin with the power cord, outlet, and TV power control.
- The TV’s menus appear, but one HDMI device has no picture: Check that device, the selected input, its cable, and any receiver or hub in the signal path.
- The interface or picture appears, but there is no sound: Check mute, volume, and the audio output in use.
- The screen stays dark across menus and inputs: The cause may not be an HDMI cable. Complete the basic external checks, then consult the manual for the exact model or seek qualified service.
Insignia has sold TVs on different platforms, and the menus and recovery steps are not identical. For model-specific instructions, use the manual for your TV rather than assuming one reset path fits all Insignia sets.

- Confirm the TV has power. Make sure the power cord is seated securely and the outlet works. Try the TV’s physical power control as well as the remote. If the TV will not turn on, resolve this before investigating HDMI or audio settings. Insignia manuals include power state and outlet checks in their dark-screen troubleshooting guidance: Insignia Roku TV manual and Insignia LED TV manual.
- Select the input that the device uses. If a cable box, console, or streaming player is connected to HDMI 1, for example, select HDMI 1 on the TV. Check that the external device is powered on. A wrong input or an undetected source can leave the picture blank.
- Reseat the video cable. Disconnect and reconnect the HDMI or other video cable at both ends. If the signal passes through a receiver, soundbar, or hub, try connecting the source directly to the TV to isolate that equipment.
- Test a different cable or TV input. If available, try a known-good HDMI cable or another input, then test the source on that connection. A High-Speed HDMI cable can be a useful test for an external source, especially for 4K streaming; it will not repair an internal TV fault. Insignia and Amazon provide connection checks in their support guidance: Insignia Roku TV manual and Amazon Fire TV blank-screen guidance.
Restart the TV using instructions for its platform
For a Fire TV Smart TV, Amazon’s restart instruction is to unplug the TV’s power cord from the TV or wall outlet for at least 30 seconds, then reconnect it. See Amazon Fire TV troubleshooting. Do not treat that interval or procedure as a universal instruction for every Insignia TV; check the manual for other platforms and models.

A factory reset is not a first-line check. It can erase customized settings and will not fix a hardware fault. If you are considering one, follow the instructions for your specific model and understand the effect before proceeding.
If the picture works but the sound does not
Check mute and volume
Confirm the TV is not muted and raise the volume using the TV or remote. If the picture comes from an external device, check that device’s audio settings as well.

Check which speakers or output the TV is using
On Fire TV Smart TVs, confirm that TV Speakers is enabled if you want sound from the built-in speakers. If you use external speakers or a soundbar, check that the selected audio output, ARC connection, and audio format are appropriate for your setup. Menu names can vary by device and software. Amazon describes Fire TV audio checks at Fire TV audio troubleshooting.

If the Fire TV interface appears but streamed content remains silent, the Audio and Video Diagnostics tool may be available on some Fire TV devices. If the checks do not help, restart the Fire TV using its platform-specific instructions.

When to stop troubleshooting and get service
If the outlet, power, input, source device, cable, and appropriate restart checks do not restore the TV, consult the manual for the exact model or contact qualified or authorized service personnel. A screen that remains dark across the TV’s menus and multiple inputs may indicate a problem that an external cable swap cannot resolve.
Do not open the TV or attempt an internal repair. An Insignia manual warns: “Do not try to repair your TV yourself. Contact authorized service personnel.” See the Insignia manual’s repair guidance.
