On PC, choose Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition if your GPU supports ray tracing and you want the game’s more extensive ray-traced lighting and reflections. Choose the original if your graphics card does not support ray tracing or you need the less demanding option. The official material describes the editions mainly as a rendering and hardware choice; it does not establish a story or core-gameplay difference. Existing PC owners were offered the Enhanced Edition as a free, separate entitlement through Steam, Epic Games Store and GOG, so check your account before buying.
What changes in the Enhanced Edition?
The main difference is how the PC game renders light. The original already supported ray tracing on compatible high-end PCs; Enhanced Edition expands its use rather than introducing ray tracing for the first time.

- More extensive ray-traced lighting: 4A Games describes an all-new, fully ray-traced lighting pipeline for the Enhanced Edition.
- Ray-traced reflections: The Enhanced Edition adds advanced ray-traced reflections.
- Emissive lighting across more of the game: The launch announcement says ray-traced emissive lighting, previously used in The Two Colonels, was brought throughout the main game. NVIDIA’s technical overview says the PC edition extends this lighting to the main game and Sam’s Story.
- DLSS support: 4A Games’ launch post specifies DLSS 2.1. NVIDIA’s 2021 overview describes DLSS 2.0; these dated descriptions should not be taken as confirmation that every current storefront build uses the same version.
- Field of View slider: 4A Games identified this as a series first for the PC launch.
The official descriptions do not identify a story or core-gameplay change between the editions, so the practical comparison is about rendering features and whether your PC can run them.
Which edition should you play on PC?
Choose Enhanced Edition if your GPU supports ray tracing
It is the option for players who want the fuller ray-traced lighting and added reflections. Its hardware requirement is consequential: PLAION’s requirements page says Enhanced Edition requires an NVIDIA RTX or AMD RX GPU. The page does not name one universal minimum Enhanced Edition model, so check the current requirements on your storefront against your exact graphics card.

Choose the original if your GPU lacks ray tracing support
The original is the safer choice for a PC without a ray-tracing-capable GPU, and its published minimum graphics list includes older cards. PLAION lists 8 GB RAM and 59 GB storage as minimum requirements, with GeForce GTX 670, GTX 1050 or AMD Radeon HD 7870 graphics. Its recommended graphics listing includes GeForce GTX 1070, GeForce RTX 2060 or AMD RX Vega 56. Those are the original game’s listed requirements, not a substitute for checking the Enhanced Edition’s current requirements.
Decide based on your own performance needs
Ray-tracing support alone does not guarantee a particular frame rate. NVIDIA’s 2021 overview claimed “2X faster at 4K” with DLSS 2.0 enabled; that is a vendor claim tied to that condition, not a general result for every GPU or system. The cited sources do not provide an independent, controlled benchmark comparing both editions across current hardware.

Do the editions differ on console?
4A Games confirmed upgrades for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and the Xbox store lists an Enhanced Edition. The available platform details here do not establish console resolution, frame rates, graphics settings or each system’s upgrade path. If you are choosing on console, check the current listing for your specific platform rather than applying the PC hardware recommendation.

In its February 15, 2021 announcement, 4A Games said the Enhanced Edition was too extensive to deliver as a simple patch, so it would be a separate product and an extra entitlement at no charge for existing PC players on Epic Games Store, Steam and GOG. That announcement establishes the offer; confirm access in the account for the store where you own the original before purchasing anything.
