How to Protect Your Health When Wildfire Smoke Worsens Air Quality

When wildfire smoke worsens air quality, check current local alerts, reduce time and exertion outdoors, and make a cleaner-air room inside. If you must go outdoors, a well-fitting NIOSH-approved N95 or P100 respirator can reduce exposure to smoke particles—but it does not protect against gases or make it safe to ignore evacuation orders. Conditions can change quickly, so keep checking official updates.

Why wildfire smoke can affect your health

Wildfire smoke contains fine particles and gases from burning vegetation, buildings, and other materials. It can travel well beyond the fire area. Exposure may cause symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, trouble breathing, irritated eyes or throat, a runny nose, headache, tiredness, chest pain, or a fast heartbeat; not everyone experiences the same symptoms. The CDC explains how wildfire smoke affects the body.

Smoke can make anyone sick, but some people are at higher risk, including people with asthma or other heart and lung conditions, children, older adults, and pregnant people. If you have a chronic condition, follow your clinician’s advice and any written action plan. CDC guidance for people with chronic conditions recommends planning ahead, keeping medicines available, and paying attention to air-quality reports.

Check air quality and local instructions first

Use the AirNow Fire and Smoke Map or your local or state air-quality and public-health agency for current conditions. Smoke levels can change during the day, so check again before outdoor activity. Follow official evacuation and return-home instructions; protective equipment does not override them.

  • Use local guidance to decide when outdoor activity is appropriate. Advice can vary with conditions and individual health needs.
  • If you live outside the United States, use your local air-quality and public-health authorities for alerts and instructions.

Make a cleaner-air room at home

Staying indoors can reduce exposure when smoke is outside, but smoke can still enter a home. Choose a room that can be closed off from outside air, then filter its air and avoid adding indoor particles. AirNow notes that “Setting up a clean air room at home can help reduce your exposure to wildfire smoke while sheltering indoors.” See AirNow’s Be Smoke Ready guidance.

  1. Close windows and doors. Keep them closed while outdoor air is smoky, if indoor temperatures and safety allow.
  2. Filter the air. Run a portable room air cleaner sized for the room. AirNow advises running it continuously at the highest fan speed to maximize filtration. Avoid air cleaners that generate ozone.
  3. Use central HVAC carefully. If your system allows it, use recirculation and install the highest-efficiency filter the system can accommodate, following the manufacturer’s specifications.
  4. Limit indoor particle sources. Avoid smoking, candles, incense, indoor gas, wood, or propane fires, frying or broiling, and vacuuming while smoke is affecting air quality.

A cleaner-air room can reduce exposure; it is not a guarantee that indoor air will be completely smoke-free. For more home-protection steps, see CDC’s wildfire smoke safety guidance and the EPA Wildfire Smoke: A Guide for Public Health Officials.

Choose protection for the situation

Option When it may help What to check
Portable room air cleaner When you are indoors and want to filter air in a room. Choose a unit sized for the room; avoid ozone-generating cleaners. Follow its instructions for filter maintenance.
Central HVAC filter When your home has a compatible central system. Use recirculation when appropriate and only a filter the system can accommodate, according to manufacturer guidance.
NIOSH-approved N95 or P100 respirator When outdoor exposure is unavoidable. Fit and seal matter. It filters particles, not gases such as carbon monoxide, and is not a reason to stay outside during an evacuation.

These options address different situations: room and HVAC filtration are for indoor air, while a respirator is worn by an individual. The guidance above does not establish a product ranking or guarantee a particular health outcome.

Use a respirator correctly if you must go outside

A well-fitting NIOSH-approved N95 or P100 respirator may reduce exposure to smoke particles. It should cover your nose and chin and seal closely to your face. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and check the seal each time you put it on; try another size or model if it does not seal. NIOSH explains respirator use during wildfire smoke events.

3M 8511 Drywall Sanding N95 Cool Flow Valved Disposable Respirator, 10-Pack | NIOSH-Approved, Relief From Dusts And Certain Particles During Sanding, Pollen, Mold Spores, Dust Particles
  • NIOSH-APPROVED N95 for at least 95 percent filtration efficiency against certain non-oil-based particles and aerosols
  • USE FOR: Sanding, drywall cutting, sweeping, sawing, woodworking, fiberglass insulating, yard work, grinding and dusting
  • 3M ADVANCED ELECTROSTATIC MEDIA enhances the capture of airborne particles and allows for easy breathing
  • 3M COOL FLOW VALVE helps release warm, exhaled breath from inside the respirator
  • UP TO 50% EASIER BREATHING Compared to 3M 8200

Cloth masks, surgical masks, bandanas, and tissues are not designed to filter very small smoke particles effectively or provide the same seal. Even a properly used filtering facepiece does not protect against gases such as carbon monoxide. A respirator also does not replace evacuation or other public-health instructions.

Know when to follow your care plan or seek help

If you have asthma or another chronic condition, follow your clinician’s guidance and your written action plan. Keep prescribed medicines available as advised. If breathing difficulty or other symptoms do not improve, CDC advises considering evacuation and seeking appropriate help. For severe or worsening symptoms, contact local emergency or medical services. There is no single symptom threshold in this guidance that applies to everyone.
