What MetaTrader 4 can do
MetaTrader 4 (MT4) brings together quote and news viewing, trade operations and position management, technical analysis, MQL4 programs, and strategy testing. MetaQuotes’ official platform page lists 9 timeframes, 23 analytical objects, and 30 built-in technical indicators; the page does not state a publication year for those figures. These are platform features, not evidence that using them improves trading performance.

MetaQuotes announced MT4 Platform Build 1490 on 2 October 2026, describing security enhancements, bug fixes, and stability changes. Check the official MetaTrader 4 page for platform information and release notices. Availability of updates or features may depend on the terminal and broker environment.

Use a template for a recurring chart setup
A template saves the appearance and settings of an individual chart, including indicators and, if attached, an Expert Advisor (EA) and its parameters. This is useful when you want a consistent layout without configuring each chart from scratch. Before applying a template broadly, check which indicators and programs it contains so you do not unintentionally attach an EA or carry over settings you did not mean to use.

Use a profile for a group of charts
A profile saves a group of charts and their arrangement. Use one profile for a particular set of symbols or task, and another for a different workflow, rather than reopening and rearranging charts each time. The practical distinction is simple: a template reuses one chart’s setup; a profile restores a workspace of multiple charts.

Where to check account and platform status
Use the Terminal to review operational information such as open positions, account history, alerts, and program or EA logs. These views help you see what the platform has recorded; they do not replace checking your account or confirming that an action completed as intended.
The status bar provides a quick view of connection status and traffic indicators. If quotes or chart information appear stale, check whether the terminal is connected before assuming the displayed data is current. The location and information are described in MetaQuotes’ MT4 user guide.

What to do when a chart has gaps or errors
If a chart appears to have missing bars or errors, refresh it so MT4 can request missing bars from the server. In the chart menu, choose Charts → Refresh. Check the connection status if the chart still does not update.
Refreshing addresses missing bars as described in the MetaTrader 4 chart help. It does not establish that the broker’s feed is otherwise accurate or that the market view is complete.

MT4 alerts can notify you when specified events occur. Treat an alert as a prompt to review a condition, not as a trade recommendation or a substitute for monitoring execution and risk. Decide in advance what the alert is meant to draw your attention to, and verify the relevant chart and account information before acting.

How to evaluate an Expert Advisor before using it
Understand the test before reading the result
An EA is an MQL4 program for automated analysis or trading. MT4’s Strategy Tester runs an EA against modeled historical data, and optimization repeats test passes using different input values. A favorable result means the program performed favorably under those test settings and data; it does not establish how it will behave in live conditions.
Inspect the assumptions and reports
Use the tester’s settings, results, graph, report, and journal views to understand what was tested and what the run produced. Check the modeling assumptions and the period and inputs used. Review logs for errors, and examine drawdown-related results when available rather than focusing only on the headline result. MetaQuotes documents the tester in its Strategy Tester help.
