Can Linux Really Be Easier Than Windows? A Safer Way to Find Out

A guided Linux installer can make setup approachable, but everyday ease depends on the user’s apps, files, hardware, and routine. Here’s how to test before replacing Windows.

Installing Linux on a relative’s PC can show that the setup process is manageable; it cannot, by itself, prove Linux is easier than Windows for everyday use. Ubuntu’s guided installer offers a USB preview before installation and default choices intended to produce a usable system. The fairest test is to check the computer, files, apps, and routine before deciding whether to replace Windows.

What an installation can—and cannot—prove

Ubuntu’s current installation documentation describes a guided process that does not require deep technical knowledge. It also lets you start a preview from USB and check the computer before making changes. Those features support a limited conclusion: a beginner may be able to install Ubuntu without handling every technical detail manually. They do not establish that Linux is universally easier to install than Windows, or that a particular person will find its desktop easier to use.

Linux Mint likewise describes its desktop as designed to be comfortable and easy to use, but that is the project’s own characterization, not an independent comparison with Windows. A meaningful result for a family member depends on whether her essential files, applications, devices, and habits work for her on the system she actually uses.

Choose a distribution and check its requirements

“Linux” covers many distributions, and their published requirements differ. The figures below are from the current official pages cited; they are requirements for those named distributions, not universal Linux minimums.

Distribution Published requirements
Ubuntu Desktop 2 GHz dual-core processor or better, 6 GB of system memory, and 25 GB of free drive space, according to Canonical’s Ubuntu Desktop download page.
Linux Mint 2 GB RAM minimum (4 GB recommended), 20 GB disk space minimum (100 GB recommended), and 1024×768 resolution, according to the Linux Mint FAQ.

Meeting a published minimum does not establish that every application or device will work well. Ubuntu recommends certified hardware where possible. If a particular app is essential, confirm that it is available for the distribution or identify a suitable alternative before changing the PC.

Test the PC before changing its disk

Ubuntu’s installer can start from a USB stick in a preview mode. Use that opportunity to check the specific computer rather than assuming compatibility from its age or specifications. These checks are a practical evaluation, not a guarantee of support for every peripheral:

  • Whether required software is available and suitable

If a required device or app fails in the preview, resolve that issue before replacing Windows. A preview is useful for checking hardware, but it does not prove that every feature will work identically after installation.

Back up files and prepare installation media

Ubuntu’s tutorial recommends backing up data on a PC that has been used before. Make a separate copy of important files and verify that the copy can be opened. An external backup drive is one possible destination, not a requirement specified by Ubuntu.

Creating installation media requires writing the Ubuntu image to a USB stick, and that process erases the stick. Use an empty one or copy its contents elsewhere first. Ubuntu’s installation guide describes the guided flow; its older tutorial explicitly advises backing up an existing computer and is marked as migrating to the newer documentation.

Decide whether to replace Windows or keep it

After downloading Ubuntu, writing the image to USB, and booting the PC from it, choose “Try Ubuntu” for the preview or “Install Ubuntu” to continue. In the guided installer, review the software and disk choices carefully before confirming anything.

Beamo Linux Mint Cinnamon 22.3 64-bit Bootable USB Flash Drive - Live USB for Installing and Repairing Linux Mint
  • LINUX MINT 22.3 MEDIA - 16GB bootable USB with Linux Mint Cinnamon 22.3 for compatible x86-64 PCs.
  • LIVE OR INSTALL - On supported hardware, start the Linux Mint live environment to evaluate it or launch the installer.
  • PLATFORM BOUNDARY - Not designed to boot Apple Silicon or other ARM-based computers. Confirm CPU architecture and USB-boot support before purchase.
  • BOOT SETTINGS VARY - Boot-menu keys and UEFI settings differ by manufacturer; consult the computer maker's instructions if the USB is not listed.
  • BACK UP BEFORE INSTALLING - Disk-partition and installation choices can erase files or operating systems. Disconnect nonessential drives and preserve the USB until it is no longer needed for installation or recovery.
  • Erase disk and install Ubuntu: Ubuntu says this uses the entire selected drive. Choose it only if you intend to remove the existing installation and have confirmed the selected drive and backups.
  • Install alongside: Ubuntu’s option preserves existing files while allocating space for Ubuntu. It is not available as a safe route when Windows BitLocker is enabled: Ubuntu says the encrypted Windows installation cannot be accessed safely for an alongside installation. The stated options are to replace Windows, disable BitLocker, or use a separate unencrypted disk.
  • Manual partitioning: Ubuntu identifies this as an option for advanced users, rather than the simplest route for a first installation.

Ubuntu describes erasing the selected disk as the easiest choice when it will be the only operating system. “Easiest” here refers to the installer’s disk setup, not the broader question of whether Ubuntu is easier to live with than Windows.

Judge everyday ease by the user’s real routine

Once the system is installed, let the person who will use it carry out familiar tasks. Observe whether she can find and open her documents, use her usual websites and services, handle photos, print, and complete the tasks she does most often without help. This is more informative than the installer’s simplicity, and more specific than a general claim that one operating system is easier.

For a practical decision, distinguish two questions: did the installation go smoothly, and can the user comfortably do the things she needs afterward? The official pages establish a guided Ubuntu installation path and publish distribution-specific requirements; they do not provide a controlled comparison proving that Linux is easier than Windows.
