That makes it potentially useful—and makes what it can access, how it browses, and when it asks permission consequential. Recent reporting has raised questions about those boundaries, while Meta’s and Amazon’s accounts of Muse’s shopping behavior conflict.
What Meta’s Muse agent is designed to do
Meta describes Muse as a personal AI agent that can take on everyday tasks. GeekWire reported that Meta launched it on September 8, 2026, as a system for handling multi-step work rather than simply responding to one prompt at a time. Examples cited by Meta include finding deals, booking reservations, and managing an inbox.

At launch, GeekWire reported that Muse was available through iOS, Android, muse.ai, and WhatsApp, with a free offering and paid subscription tiers. Those details can change, and the report does not establish which countries or subscription terms are currently supported. Check the service’s current availability and pricing before relying on them.
How Meta says Muse acts—and what its safeguards establish
GeekWire reported Meta’s description of Muse as running in a secure virtual machine with its own browser. According to Meta, Muse asks for confirmation before sensitive actions such as sending an email or making a purchase. Meta also says a separate monitoring agent, Sentinel, must approve actions sent to the internet.

Those are descriptions of Meta’s safeguards, not findings from an independent security audit. They explain the protections Meta says it built, but do not independently show how every permission or action works in practice. For an agent that can interact with accounts and websites, it matters both what the system can reach and what a user can understand about that access before approving it.
What the Messages sync report does—and does not—show
In a September 2026 column, Inc. columnist Jason Aten described using Muse on his Mac and finding that it surfaced details from Messages. Aten reported a sync of 187,462 database rows, despite his recollection that he had declined access. That is one journalist’s reported experience; it does not establish that every Muse installation accesses Messages in the same way.

In a September 23 follow-up, Aten reported that Meta Superintelligence Labs head David Singleton said Muse does not monitor Mac notifications. Singleton said that when Messages access is enabled, Muse syncs data from the Messages database. He acknowledged that Muse had explained the feature incorrectly and apologized: “That’s on us.”
Aten said he still had not received an explanation for how the reported sync occurred given the settings he recalled choosing. The cited coverage therefore leaves an important question unresolved: how the reported data sync related to his permissions. It is fair to treat the episode as a reason to scrutinize permission explanations; it is not evidence that Muse secretly reads everyone’s messages.

Why Amazon objected to Muse shopping
GeekWire reported that Amazon blocked Muse from shopping on Amazon.com. Amazon said Muse was not authorized, did not identify itself as an AI agent while browsing, and appeared to capture and store customer credentials. An Amazon spokesperson said third-party purchase applications should operate openly and respect a service provider’s decision about whether to participate.
Meta’s account, also reported by GeekWire, disputes key parts of that picture. Meta said Muse “has no visibility into people’s passwords or payment methods,” and that credentials users share are stored securely so Muse can use them without seeing them. GeekWire also reported Meta’s explanation that when a service does not offer a public API, Muse may use it through a browser as a person would.

These are competing company claims, not a technical dispute settled by the cited reporting. The report does not establish the dispute’s eventual outcome or independently verify either company’s account. The disagreement highlights a practical issue with agents that browse and transact: users and service providers may have different expectations about whether an automated agent is authorized and how openly it should identify itself.

What to check before connecting accounts
Before giving Muse access to an account or local information, consider what the agent needs for the task and what you would be comfortable letting it read or do. In particular, verify the permission descriptions and any account or device access you enable, and pay attention to when the agent asks for approval before taking an action. Do not assume a safeguard described by the company is an independent guarantee.

- Which services and local information can Muse access for the task?
- How does the permission request describe that access, and can you tell what you are approving?
- Which actions require your confirmation, especially sending messages or making purchases?
- How does Muse identify itself when it interacts with a website, and does that service allow the interaction?
- Which protections are documented by Meta, and which have been independently assessed?
- Is Muse currently supported on your platform and in your country, and what subscription terms apply?
Aten reported that Muse had more than 2.5 million downloads, citing Sensor Tower data, in his September 23, 2026, Inc. follow-up. That figure is an attributed download estimate, not evidence about the product’s safety or how its permissions work.
Muse Charm is announced, but availability is not established
Meta’s Muse page calls Muse Charm “The first device made for Muse, your personal AI agent” and invites visitors to sign up for availability updates. The page supplies no price, sale date, or retailer listing. It establishes an announced device, not that Muse Charm is currently on sale or available through Amazon.
