The Taurids will be active in October 2026, but “Halloween fireballs” does not mean a meteor storm is expected on October 31. The Southern Taurids run from September 20 to November 20, with an annual-component peak on October 14 and a later fireball-swarm component peak on November 5. The Northern Taurids join them from October 20, peaking around November 11–12. The American Meteor Society describes the Southern branch as rich in fireballs, but the activity is spread across weeks rather than confined to one night.
What the Taurids may bring in October
October is part of the Taurids’ extended season. The Southern Taurids are active from September 20 through November 20, 2026. Their calendar lists an annual-component peak on October 14, followed by a fireball-swarm component peak on November 5. The Northern Taurids begin October 20, so both branches are active in late October and early November.

That overlap can sometimes bring a notable increase in fireball activity, according to the American Meteor Society (AMS). It is a reason to watch over the broader season, not a promise of a burst on Halloween night. The AMS says the Southern Taurids are rich in fireballs and often account for more fireball reports from September through November. A peak date marks a forecast period of stronger activity; it does not guarantee a particular number of meteors at your location.

| Branch | Active dates | Peak | Fireball emphasis | Moon at listed peak |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Southern Taurids | September 20–November 20 | Annual component: October 14; fireball-swarm component: November 5. AMS lists the peak night as November 4–5. | AMS describes the branch as rich in fireballs, with increased fireball reports often occurring September–November. | 25% illuminated waning crescent on November 4–5; AMS expects limited lunar interference. |
| Northern Taurids | October 20–December 10 | November 11–12, according to AMS; the International Meteor Organization (IMO) lists November 12 as the maximum. | The overlap with the Southern branch in late October and early November can sometimes coincide with increased fireball activity. | 4% illuminated waxing crescent on November 11–12; AMS describes conditions as very favorable. |
Dates, activity descriptions and Moon conditions in the table are from the American Meteor Society’s 2026/2027 Meteor Shower Calendar. The IMO’s 2026 calendar independently gives the Northern maximum as November 12. Moonlight is only one factor in what you see; local darkness, weather and the observing site also matter.

Why Taurid fireballs are possible
The Taurids are associated with comet Encke. Meteors are produced when debris enters Earth’s atmosphere and heats up; NASA notes that most comet debris is between the size of a grain of sand and a pea and burns up before reaching the ground. A particularly bright meteor is called a fireball. The Southern Taurids’ reputation for fireballs makes occasional striking sights plausible, but it does not mean every observer will see one.
NASA’s overview of the connection between meteor showers, debris and comet Encke is available on its Meteor Showers page.

How many meteors should you expect?
The IMO lists a zenithal hourly rate (ZHR) of 5 for the Northern Taurids’ November 12 maximum. ZHR is a standardized rate under idealized observing conditions, with the radiant overhead and a dark sky; it is not a forecast that each person will see five meteors per hour. The number visible from a particular site can be lower, and a fireball is an occasional possibility rather than a scheduled event. The IMO also notes a possible modest enhancement around November 17.
NASA’s Meteoroid Environment Office forecast, issued October 17, 2025, predicts no meteor-shower outbursts in 2026 and typical activity for nearly all showers in its forecast. That forecast concerns the meteoroid environment in low Earth orbit, not a direct prediction of what a ground observer will see. It provides no basis for promising a Taurid storm over a particular place or night.

When and how to watch
If you want to watch in October, choose a dark location with a wide, unobstructed view of the sky and give your eyes time to adjust. You do not need to aim at a precise point: meteors can appear across the sky, even though a shower’s meteors seem to radiate from a common area. Check the local forecast and plan for patience; the shower’s extended activity means a quiet spell does not rule out a later meteor.
For the listed November peaks, the Moon should be a relatively small obstacle: AMS gives 25% illumination for the Southern peak night of November 4–5 and 4% for the Northern peak night of November 11–12. The Northern peak therefore has especially favorable lunar conditions in 2026. These are calendar conditions, not a guarantee of clear skies or a bright meteor at your location.
