Neither wallet is the better choice for everyone. MetaMask is the stronger fit if you want a wider documented choice of hardware-wallet connections and more control over additional wallet accounts. Coinbase Wallet—now presented within Coinbase’s evolving Base App experience—may suit you better if you value Coinbase-linked funding and a guided interface. Choose by the exact account type, network and features you plan to use; neither wallet’s safeguards make signing a transaction risk-free.
How do MetaMask and Coinbase Wallet compare?
| What matters to you | Better fit based on documented features | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Hardware-wallet choice | MetaMask | MetaMask documents Ledger, Trezor, Lattice and several air-gapped devices. Coinbase documents Ledger compatibility for its browser extension. Support varies by interface and device model. |
| Funding from a Coinbase account | Coinbase Wallet / Base App | Coinbase documents account-linking and transfer routes. Transfers are on-chain and incur network fees; an asset available in one place may not be available in the other. |
| Account recovery | Depends on the account mode | Compare the recovery method for the specific Coinbase wallet type or MetaMask setup you intend to use. A lost recovery phrase is not something support can simply replace. |
| Networks and assets | Depends on the assets, network and account mode | Network availability does not guarantee that every wallet mode supports every asset or feature. Check the current network list before transferring. |
| Transaction warnings and dapp controls | Compare the features on your network | Coinbase describes previews, approval alerts, a dapp blocklist and connection-management tools; it says some features are limited to Ethereum and Polygon. Previews are estimates, not guarantees. |
| Swap costs | Compare the final quote for your route | Service charges, network fees and other transaction costs can differ. A dated fee comparison is not a current quote. |
This is a feature-fit comparison, not a security ranking or a hands-on test. Both products are self-custody options, so the user remains responsible for credentials and transaction approvals.

What does self-custody mean for these wallets?
With a self-custody wallet, you control the credentials that authorize access to your crypto assets. Coinbase describes its wallet as storing private keys on the user’s device and identifies the recovery phrase as the means to regain access. MetaMask likewise warns that the recovery phrase and private keys are sensitive. Its Help Center puts the risk plainly: “Anyone who has your SRP or private keys can control your assets, and therefore send tokens out of your accounts.”
That responsibility remains even if an app shows a transaction preview or offers a hardware-wallet connection. A wallet can help you inspect or authorize an action, but it cannot make a malicious application safe or undo a transfer you approved.

Which wallet works with your networks and assets?
Check compatibility for the particular account mode you will use, not just the wallet brand. Coinbase documents different support for smart wallets than for email/social-login and mnemonic wallets: its support page lists EVM-compatible networks for smart wallets, while email/social-login and mnemonic wallets also support Bitcoin and Solana. That distinction means it would be inaccurate to assume every Coinbase wallet mode supports Bitcoin or Solana.
Coinbase lists Ethereum, Base, Optimism, Arbitrum, Polygon, Avalanche C-Chain, BNB Chain, Monad, Robinhood Chain and Zora among its preconfigured networks. Its documentation also says some networks were no longer supported in Coinbase Wallet after August 15, 2026, and advises users with assets on unsupported networks to use a wallet that supports them. Network availability can change, so verify the live support information and destination network before moving funds.

MetaMask’s FAQ describes support for ERC-20, ERC-721 and ERC-1155 tokens and token swaps. That should not be reduced to one chain count: the assets and features available depend on the network and app setup. MetaMask also distinguishes accounts derived from a recovery phrase from additional accounts imported with a private key or JSON. The recovery phrase alone does not restore those separately imported accounts.

How do account recovery options differ?
Coinbase Wallet
Coinbase uses different recovery arrangements for different wallet types. Its documentation distinguishes passkey smart wallets from mnemonic and email/social-login wallets. Before relying on any recovery route, identify which type you created and understand what credentials or access it requires. Coinbase’s safety page states: “Nobody, including Coinbase, can access your tokens or NFTs without your recovery phrase.”

MetaMask
MetaMask says its support team cannot recover a lost Secret Recovery Phrase. It also documents an optional recovery arrangement linked to a Google or Apple account, in which the phrase is encrypted and split into shards. That option is not the same as the standard recovery-phrase setup, so check which method you actually enabled. For any setup, keep recovery material secure and do not share it with someone claiming they need it to help.
Which offers more hardware-wallet flexibility?
MetaMask’s hardware-wallet guide documents direct connections to Ledger, Trezor and Lattice devices, as well as several air-gapped wallets. Its mobile support list is narrower than the extension list. Coinbase documents Ledger compatibility for its browser extension. Confirm compatibility for the exact device, wallet interface and platform before choosing on this basis.

A hardware wallet keeps key use behind a separate physical approval step: MetaMask says you need access to the attached device to approve a transaction. It can reduce exposure of signing keys, but it does not determine whether the transaction you approve is trustworthy. Read the details shown on the device and do not approve an action you do not understand.
How useful are their dapp and transaction safeguards?
Coinbase describes token-approval alerts, transaction previews, a dapp blocklist, and tools for reviewing and revoking dapp connections. The company says some of these features are currently supported on Ethereum and Polygon, and that previews are estimates. Treat them as aids for reviewing an action, not as a guarantee that a transaction is harmless or that a site is legitimate.

Whichever wallet you use, a dapp connection and a token approval are not the same thing as a completed transfer, but they can still grant permissions with financial consequences. Review the requested network, asset, amount and permissions before signing; disconnecting a site does not necessarily revoke token approvals already granted.
What fees should you expect?
A secondary comparison updated August 7, 2026 reported a 0.875% MetaMask swap service charge and Coinbase/Base App DEX swap fees of up to 1%. These are dated reported figures, not guaranteed current prices or a complete comparison of transaction cost. Network fees and other charges may apply. Before swapping, compare the in-wallet quote and disclosures for the exact asset, route and network you intend to use.
Which one should you choose?
Choose MetaMask if…
- You want the broader set of hardware-wallet brands documented in the support materials reviewed.
- You use accounts imported separately from your recovery-phrase account and are prepared to manage their credentials independently.
- You have checked that the networks and assets you need are supported by your chosen MetaMask interface.
Choose Coinbase Wallet / Base App if…
- You value documented linking and on-chain transfer routes between the wallet experience and a Coinbase account.
- You prefer its guided experience and have confirmed the features you need are available for your account mode and network.
- You understand which recovery method applies to your smart wallet, mnemonic wallet or email/social-login wallet.
If neither set of advantages decides it, make a short compatibility check before transferring anything: confirm the account mode, network, asset, recovery method and final transaction quote. Do not send funds until the destination wallet can receive that asset on that network.
