MetaMask disclosed a security incident affecting part of its infrastructure. In its October 1, 2026 update, the company said that, based on its investigation to date, there was no indication that MetaMask wallets or customer funds had been affected. The investigation and response were still ongoing, so that statement is not a final account of the incident.
What MetaMask has confirmed
MetaMask’s update, which included an initial notice on September 30 and a follow-up on October 1, said it was investigating and responding to an incident affecting part of its infrastructure. The company said it was working with external partners and security advisers on remediation. On October 1, it said it had taken the precautionary step of exiting affected validators and was continuing containment and verification. MetaMask’s official update is the source for its statements.

MetaMask said: “Based on our investigation to date, there is no indication that MetaMask wallets or customer funds have been affected.” The phrase “to date” matters: it describes the company’s findings at that point in an ongoing investigation, not a final forensic conclusion.

The public update does not identify the affected infrastructure, explain how the incident began, say whether systems or data were accessed, or establish the final scope. BleepingComputer reported that a MetaMask spokesperson directed questions about affected systems and data access back to the company’s public statement. The available statements therefore do not establish a confirmed wallet breach, stolen credentials, or a specific attack method. BleepingComputer’s report provides that reporting context.

What the validator exits mean for staking
MetaMask said it exited affected validators as a precaution. It also said its staking operations are non-custodial and that it does not manage withdrawal keys for clients’ stake. That explains who controls those withdrawal keys; it does not establish that every system or operational risk is unaffected.
Lido told BleepingComputer that the relevant validators had begun exiting and were expected to be exited by October 7, 2026, but not fully withdrawn by then. Lido warned that the exit process could involve foregone rewards and possible downtime penalties. This is Lido’s reported timeline and impact, not a confirmed complete recovery schedule from MetaMask.

CoinDesk reported researcher Kaden’s estimates of about 0.36 ETH in diverted block-production payments and roughly 17,000 validators holding about 523,000 ETH being exited. CoinDesk said MetaMask had not confirmed those figures at publication. It also reported that withdrawal and re-entry could take up to approximately 45 days because of the Ethereum staking queue; that is an operational estimate, not a guaranteed timeline. CoinDesk quoted Lido as saying stETH holders did not need to take action. These estimates and partner guidance should not be mistaken for MetaMask’s final incident accounting. CoinDesk’s report has the reported estimates and queue context.

- Do not share your Secret Recovery Phrase or private keys in response to a message, call, website, or support request. MetaMask says it will never ask for your Secret Recovery Phrase.
- Use MetaMask’s official channels for incident updates. Treat unsolicited messages claiming to offer incident support with caution.
- Do not assume that a request to move funds, connect a wallet, or reveal a recovery phrase is legitimate just because it mentions this incident.
These precautions address common ways users can be targeted; MetaMask’s public statements do not say that recovery phrases or private keys were compromised in this incident.

How to read updates as the investigation continues
Keep three separate questions in view: whether wallets or customer funds show evidence of impact, what is happening to validator operations, and what the investigation has established about the affected infrastructure. MetaMask’s October 1 statement addressed the first question only as a finding “to date”; the validator exits concern staking operations, and the public materials had not disclosed the technical cause or final scope. Check MetaMask’s official update for any later verified information.
