Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2 is worth considering on PS5 if you want to play Metal Gear Solid 4 on a modern console or missed Peace Walker the first time around. Its centerpiece is a well-regarded PS5 port of MGS4, though the collection is a weaker starting point for newcomers: the story leans heavily on earlier games, and the package has only one bonus title.
What do you get in the PS5 collection?
Released on August 27, 2026, Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 2 brings together three games and several reference and soundtrack extras. Konami says it is available on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, and Steam, in physical and digital editions. Its most notable addition is Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, which Konami describes as available on modern platforms for the first time since its original PlayStation 3 release in 2008. How does MGS4 perform on PS5?
TechRadar’s August 2026 review reports that MGS4 runs at 4K and a steady 60 frames per second on PS5 in the reviewer’s experience, with faster area loading than the original PS3 release. The outlet considers it a strong port, while noting that some older design choices remain. These are the reviewer’s observations, not independently verified performance measurements. For players who have wanted to revisit MGS4 without returning to PS3 hardware, its inclusion and reported performance are the collection’s clearest draw.

- GAME LIST: Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker (HD Collection version), Metal Gear: Ghost Babel. Versions for other regions of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker (HD Collection version) can be downloaded separately from the store. Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker supports online play for up to 6 players.
- DIGITAL BOOKS: Metal Gear Solid 4: Screenplay Book, Metal Gear Solid 4: Master Book, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker Screenplay Book, and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker Master Book. All are accessible via the in-game Start Menu.
- METAL GEAR SOLID: MASTER COLLECTION Vol.1 SAVE-DATA BONUS*: If a user has saved data for any title included in METAL GEAR SOLID: MASTER COLLECTION Vol.1, you can receive in-game items usable in Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker (HD Collection version) respectively. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots Bonus: Gold Camouflage. Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker (HD Collection version) Bonus: GOLD Uniform.
The game’s strengths are not a guarantee that its story will work for everyone. TechRadar’s reviewer found the late-story pacing and plot choices uneven, while praising standout moments such as Act 4. MGS4 is also built around the series’ accumulated story: the review warns that it can be hard to follow without familiarity with at least the original MGS trilogy.
What is Peace Walker like on PS5?
This is the HD Collection version of Peace Walker, a portable-era entry built around short missions rather than one continuous campaign. Between missions, players manage a base and develop weapons. TechRadar describes it as important and enjoyable, particularly for people who missed its PSP-era release, but says its visuals are rougher than MGS4 and its bosses are less consistent. The outlet also notes improved versions of Ashley Wood’s comic-style cutscenes.

Online co-op and versus modes
Peace Walker has optional online modes, not a collection-wide multiplayer feature. PlayStation documents CO-OPS for two to four players and VERSUS OPS for up to six, plus trading and item delivery. Online gameplay requires an internet connection and PlayStation Plus. Konami says online play is available only for Peace Walker and that crossplay is not supported. TechRadar’s reviewer did not test multiplayer, so the review does not establish how well those modes work in practice. See the PlayStation support FAQ.

The MGS4 Database and the two games’ screenplay and master books provide reference material alongside the games; the collection also includes a digital soundtrack. Their value depends on how much you want supplementary lore and documentation. The package includes Ghost Babel as its sole bonus game. TechRadar notes that the first Master Collection had more bonus titles and that Metal Gear Online is absent, so players hoping for a broader archive or that multiplayer component should temper expectations.

The US PlayStation Store listing describes basic subtitles for the main story and main characters. TechRadar reports subtitles and controller remapping in both MGS4 and Peace Walker; its reviewer found no color-blind support or audio description. Those detailed accessibility observations are the outlet’s assessment, not a promise that every accessibility need is covered.
Should you buy the collection or a game separately?
Konami and PlayStation list MGS4 and Peace Walker as individual digital purchases as well as collection content. The collection makes the most sense if you want both of those games, value the included books, database, soundtrack, and Ghost Babel, or specifically want MGS4 on current hardware. If you only want one game, compare its current standalone price with the collection price in your region; the cited US Store prices can change.

|---|---|---|
| The collection | You want MGS4 and Peace Walker together, plus the included extras. | It is less compelling if you only want one of the two main games; compare live regional prices. |
| MGS4 alone | You mainly want to revisit MGS4 on a modern platform. | You do not get Peace Walker or the collection’s bundled extras. |
| Peace Walker alone | You mainly want its mission-based campaign and base-management loop. | You do not get MGS4 or the other collection content. |
Who is Master Collection Vol. 2 for?
It is a good fit if
- You have played earlier Metal Gear Solid games and want to continue the story with MGS4.
- You missed Peace Walker and want its portable-era campaign and progression systems on a modern platform.
- You expect to play Peace Walker online and have internet access and PlayStation Plus.
It is a less suitable fit if
- You are looking for a straightforward first Metal Gear Solid game: MGS4’s story assumes substantial prior knowledge, according to TechRadar’s review.
- You want a large collection of bonus games or Metal Gear Online.
- You only want one included game and the standalone digital listing is better value at its current regional price.
For an existing fan, the PS5 edition’s central appeal is straightforward: MGS4 returns on modern hardware, and Peace Walker adds a distinctly different, mission-driven campaign. For a newcomer, the story dependency makes this a poor first purchase even if the reported MGS4 performance is attractive.
