ElevenLabs’ Text to Speech (TTS) API can turn book text into narration, and ElevenLabs lists audiobook production in multiple languages as a use case. The API supplies speech synthesis; your application must handle the book workflow around it: accepting text, organizing chapters, saving generated audio, recovering from failures, and assembling a finished audiobook.
What the ElevenLabs API does—and what your app must do
The TTS API accepts text and a voice ID, then returns synthesized audio. ElevenLabs says its TTS models cover 32 languages; that figure is from the company’s overview, which does not state a publication year. See the ElevenLabs Text to Speech overview.

The API is a synthesis layer, not a documented end-to-end audiobook builder. The reviewed API material does not establish a book-length input limit, automatic chapter management, resumable audiobook jobs, or audiobook packaging. Design those parts in your own application and check the current API reference for applicable request limits before deployment.
Plan the application workflow
For a practical first version, treat each chapter or smaller text section as a unit your app can submit, track, and store independently. This is an application design choice—not a built-in chapter feature established by the API documentation.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Accept and prepare the text. Let the user provide book text, then preserve the original and divide it into ordered sections. Choose section sizes only after checking the current endpoint limits; the retrieved documentation does not establish a maximum text length.
- Choose a voice, model, and output. Store the voice ID and the user’s selected settings with each section so that generated files can be associated with the right chapter and configuration.
- Submit TTS requests. Send each section’s text and voice ID to the TTS endpoint. The API reference’s basic example uses the
eleven_multilingual_v2model and an MP3 output format. Confirm supported options in the current TTS endpoint reference. - Save each response. Persist audio and request status as your application receives results. Keep section order and metadata so a failed section can be identified without losing track of completed work.
- Recover and assemble. Add your own retry and resume behavior, then combine or package the completed audio in chapter order using the audio-processing approach appropriate for your product. The cited TTS materials do not document audiobook stitching or export as a built-in feature.
Make the first API request safely
Use the official quickstart for current authentication and SDK setup steps. It walks through creating an API key, storing it as a managed secret or environment configuration, installing a library, and making a first TTS request. ElevenLabs provides official Python and Node.js libraries; its API introduction also describes HTTP and WebSocket access. Keep the key on your server rather than exposing it in browser code or a mobile app.
The API reference’s basic request is a useful starting point: provide text and a voice ID, select a model, and request an output format. The example specifies eleven_multilingual_v2 and MP3; those are example settings, not a claim that they are best for every language or production requirement.

Model, voice, and output format are decisions your app should make explicit rather than burying in code. The overview describes multilingual support, while the endpoint reference shows the request structure and an example model and format. The available documentation does not provide an audiobook-specific comparison of voice quality, language coverage by model, or audio-format trade-offs, so test candidate settings with representative passages before choosing defaults.

- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Keep the request settings alongside each saved section. That makes it easier to reproduce a generation or explain why sections differ if a user changes voice or model partway through a project. If the app permits changes during generation, define whether earlier sections retain their original settings or are regenerated for consistency.
Track failures, usage, and privacy
Observe requests and usage
ElevenLabs says response headers can expose character-cost metadata and request identifiers. Capture those values with each job to support usage monitoring and troubleshooting; they are not a substitute for checking current official pricing, and the cited material does not provide a book-level cost estimate. See the API introduction.

Design retries and resumability in your app
Maintain per-section states such as queued, generating, completed, and failed, along with the request identifier when available. Your application should decide when and how to retry a failed request and how to avoid treating an already saved section as missing. The reviewed docs do not establish a native resumable audiobook job or a chapter-level retry feature.

Understand zero-retention mode
The TTS endpoint supports zero-retention mode through enable_logging: false. The endpoint documentation says history features, including request stitching, are unavailable for that request. Account for this trade-off if your application depends on history-based features, and consult the endpoint reference for the current behavior.

Keep audiobook narration separate from dubbing
For turning a book into narration, the relevant workflow is TTS. Dubbing is a separate API workflow for source media and translated language targets, not the book-text-to-narration path described above.
The Dubbing documentation describes project creation, language-target generation, and BCP-47 language tags. The Dubbing Studio page also describes per-source-media-minute and per-language charging, watermarks for free-plan dubs, and Enterprise-only transcript editing and regeneration through the API. Those are dubbing-specific terms and should not be used to estimate TTS costs or describe TTS plan limits. See the Dubbing API project reference, Dubbing workflow documentation, language-target endpoint, and Dubbing Studio information.
Quick Recap
Check before launching
- Confirm current request limits, model and voice availability, and output options in the official API documentation.
- Check current official pricing independently before offering cost estimates; response metadata can help track usage but does not establish a title’s total cost.
- Decide how users can review, regenerate, download, and organize completed chapters; these are product responsibilities around the API.
- Resolve rights to the source text and permissions for the voices your application offers. The cited API material does not settle those questions.
