Meta Reportedly Claimed Nearly $6 Billion in Tax Savings for AI Data Centers

Meta reportedly claimed research tax credits by treating AI data centers as experimental or “pilot models,” reducing its tax bill by about $2 billion in 2024 and $3.9 billion in 2025, according to a TechRadar report published October 2, 2026. The combined reported savings are nearly $6 billion. Meta’s public filings cited here do not independently confirm those figures or the characterization, and they do not establish whether the IRS has accepted or rejected this specific position.

What the report says Meta claimed

TechRadar reported that Meta claimed research credits connected with AI data center equipment, including AI chips, by treating the facilities as experimental or “pilot models.” The report attributed about $2 billion in tax savings to 2024 and $3.9 billion to 2025—nearly $6 billion across the two years. TechRadar’s October 2, 2026 report is the source for both the description and the amounts.

These are reported tax savings, not figures confirmed in the Meta SEC filings cited here. The reporting also does not establish which facilities, purchases, or tax years the credit claims covered, what documentation Meta provided, or the IRS’s specific position on this issue. “Experimental” and “pilot models” should therefore be understood as descriptions in the report, not verified quotations from a named Meta representative.

What is—and is not—confirmed in Meta’s filings

Meta’s filings provide financial and tax context, but the cited disclosures do not say that the company designated AI data centers as experimental to claim research credits, nor do they verify the reported savings. Meta’s 2025 Form 10-K discusses depreciation for servers and network assets and tax contingencies; that broad context does not independently establish the reported strategy. Meta’s 2025 Form 10-K

A separate IRS notice concerns earlier tax years

Meta’s June 30, 2026 Form 10-Q describes a different tax matter: a September 2025 notice asserting $15.89 billion in additional tax, plus interest and penalties, for 2017–2019. Meta says the notice primarily concerns transfer pricing with foreign subsidiaries and other international tax adjustments. The filing says the proposed adjustments are not a final determination. What remains unresolved

  • The available reporting does not specify which data center facilities, equipment purchases, or tax years were covered by the research-credit claims.
  • The cited sources do not establish what supporting records Meta submitted or how the IRS has responded to this particular position.
  • No cited primary record confirms the reported $2 billion for 2024 or $3.9 billion for 2025.
  • The cited sources do not establish a final IRS or court determination on the reported claims.

Accordingly, the precise legal application and outcome remain unresolved in the available material. The firmest statement supported by these sources is that TechRadar reported Meta claimed the credits and attributed nearly $6 billion in savings to them; the filings cited here do not independently verify that account.
