What Quest 3S is—and what its specifications establish
Quest 3S is a wireless, all-in-one headset running Meta Horizon OS. Meta positions it as a lower-cost way into the Quest 3 device family. Its listed hardware includes the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 platform, 8 GB of onboard memory, Touch Plus controllers, and head and hand tracking. Meta lists support for both standalone use and PC VR through Quest Link.

Meta’s comparison lists a depth sensor for Quest 3 but not Quest 3S; that distinction is separate from color passthrough, which is listed for both. Meta describes passthrough and its environment-depth system in its Passthrough documentation.
How to decide whether Quest 3S is the better fit
Choose Quest 3S if platform access and launch price matter most
Meta’s October 15, 2024 developer article says Quest 3S runs the latest Quest 3 apps. That makes it a route into the Quest 3 app platform, but it is not a promise that every app will have identical performance or features on each device. Quest 3S also supports full-color passthrough and PC VR Link, according to Meta’s device comparison.

Meta announced a U.S. starting price of $299.99 at launch in 2024. Its October 2024 developer article listed 128 GB and 256 GB launch configurations at $299.99 and $399.99, respectively. Those are historical launch figures, not a statement of today’s price or available configurations. Check the current listing for your region and confirm the storage option before buying.

Quest 3 has higher listed resolution and pixel density, a wider listed field of view, and a continuous IPD slider rather than three preset positions. These are concrete specification differences; how much they affect comfort or perceived sharpness depends on the wearer and use. If fit is a concern, try the headset when possible rather than assuming one adjustment scheme will suit everyone.

Standalone play and PC VR
Quest 3S is designed to work as a standalone headset, and Meta also lists PC VR support through Quest Link by cable or Air Link. The comparison lists USB-C, but that alone does not confirm compatibility for every third-party cable, charger or accessory. Check the exact item’s compatibility with Quest 3S before purchasing it.

Meta’s comparison updated September 18, 2026 lists about 2.5 hours of battery life for Quest 3S. Treat this as a manufacturer estimate rather than a guaranteed runtime: actual use can vary, and the cited figure is not an independent test result.

- Confirm the current price, storage configuration, bundle and availability for your region; the cited prices are launch-era U.S. figures.
- Compare the listed optics and IPD adjustment with your priorities, and check headset fit if you can.
- If PC VR is important, verify your intended Link setup and any specific cable or accessory rather than inferring compatibility from USB-C alone.
