The Military Is Mounting Laser Weapons on Armored Vehicles—not Main Battle Tanks

Yes, militaries are mounting high-energy lasers on combat vehicles, but “tanks” is shorthand. The U.S. Army’s best-documented laser-equipped vehicle is the Stryker, while a larger Army laser is designed for a truck and the UK has tested a demonstrator on a Wolfhound armoured vehicle. These programs span testing, prototype development and a move into production; they do not show that M1 Abrams tanks or tank fleets generally carry laser weapons.

What vehicles have carried or are intended to carry laser weapons?

The clearest examples are short-range air-defense systems built around wheeled armored vehicles and tactical trucks. They are intended to engage aerial threats such as drones, rather than to replace the main gun on a battle tank.

DE M-SHORAD Stryker armored vehicle 50-kilowatt class, according to the U.S. Army in 2022 Short-range air defense, especially against unmanned aircraft. The Army reported combat shoot-off testing and soldier training with laser-equipped Strykers in 2021; it described an objective of delivering a four-vehicle platoon by fiscal year 2022.
E-HEL Designed for deployment from fixed bases, semi-fixed tactical sites and mobile combat vehicles Modular open-systems design with 11 major interfaces; the Army did not state a power rating in its September 2, 2026 announcement Designed to defeat unmanned aircraft. The Army announced a production agreement with AeroVironment on September 2, 2026, calling it the service’s first production contract for a high-energy laser weapon system.
IFPC-HEL Prototype designed to fit on an Army truck The Army’s 2019 contract announcement described a planned 250–300-kilowatt class capability Intended for integrated air and missile defense against threats including rockets, artillery, mortars and unmanned aircraft. The Army’s 2024 acquisition portfolio described it as a prototype.
Land Laser Directed Energy Weapon demonstrator British Army Wolfhound armoured vehicle High-powered laser; the UK Ministry of Defence did not specify a power rating in the cited 2024 trial announcements The UK reported vehicle trials in July 2024 and a drone-destruction demonstration in December 2024. It said the results would inform assessment of possible future frontline use.

The descriptions above come from U.S. Army announcements and portfolio material published in 2019, 2021, 2022, 2024 and 2026, and UK Ministry of Defence announcements from 2024. The named programs are not interchangeable: their vehicle platforms, target sets and stages of development differ.

How does a vehicle-mounted laser work?

A high-energy laser directs concentrated light at a tracked target. The system must detect and follow the target, keep the beam on a selected aimpoint, and deliver energy long enough to damage or disable it. The Army has described DE M-SHORAD as using a roof-mounted beam director and a tracking system that holds its aimpoint on a target until it is neutralized.

The vehicle is more than a mount. It carries or supports the system’s sensors, power supply, batteries and thermal-management equipment, and it can connect the weapon to command-and-control systems. IFPC-HEL’s Army portfolio description specifically notes onboard target tracking and integration with Army command-and-control systems. The exact equipment and configuration vary by program.

Why put a laser on a vehicle?

A vehicle gives the weapon mobility and a platform for the equipment needed to find, track and engage targets. It can also carry the power-generation, battery and cooling hardware that a high-energy laser requires. In practical terms, that lets a unit move the system with its forces rather than rely only on fixed-site defenses.

For suitable targets, the Army describes the laser’s “magazine” as regenerating from the system’s power source rather than being replenished with physical rounds. That can reduce ammunition-reload demands, but it does not make the weapon unconstrained: the system still depends on onboard power, thermal management and a sufficiently precise track. The Army lists reduced logistics, no ammunition reload requirement and rapid recharge among IFPC-HEL’s intended benefits.

Can these lasers shoot down drones, rockets and other threats?

Drone defense is a stated mission for DE M-SHORAD, E-HEL and the UK Wolfhound demonstrator. The Army reported a drone-destruction demonstration by the UK system in December 2024. Those facts establish demonstrations and program objectives, not that every laser system can reliably defeat every drone in combat.

IFPC-HEL is aimed at a broader air-defense mission. The Army’s 2019 contract announcement described a planned 250–300-kilowatt class system for rockets, artillery, mortars and unmanned aircraft, with a longer-term role against more demanding threats. That was a planned capability, not evidence that the prototype had already demonstrated those engagements.

Performance depends on the particular system and target. The Army’s public descriptions identify tracking, power and cooling as elements of vehicle-mounted systems, but the announcements summarized here do not establish a universal engagement range, weather limit, or success rate. It would be misleading to infer that a laser mounted on a vehicle can automatically destroy any aerial threat.

Are laser-equipped vehicles already deployed?

The public record shows different levels of maturity, not a single fleet-wide deployment:

  • Demonstrated and soldier-tested: The Army reported realistic combat shoot-off testing and soldier training with laser-equipped Strykers for DE M-SHORAD in 2021. Its reporting described a four-vehicle platoon delivery objective for fiscal year 2022; that objective alone does not establish the present operational status or numbers of vehicles.
  • Prototype: The Army’s 2024 acquisition portfolio still described IFPC-HEL as a truck-mounted prototype.
  • Production transition: On September 2, 2026, the Army announced an E-HEL production agreement, which it called its first production contract for a high-energy laser weapon system. A production contract is a significant step, but it is not proof that a broad operational fleet has already been fielded.
  • Future stationing considered: A 2025 Fort Cavazos environmental analysis considered fielding IFPC-DE and M-SHORAD Increment 2 there in 2027 or later. An analyzed timeframe is not confirmation that the systems have arrived or that the schedule is final.
  • International demonstration: The UK’s Wolfhound-mounted system underwent trials and a drone-destruction demonstration in 2024; the Ministry of Defence said the results would inform its assessment of future frontline use.

Does this mean tanks will replace guns and missiles with lasers?

No. The documented examples are air-defense systems on Strykers, trucks and a Wolfhound armoured vehicle—not evidence of laser weapons mounted on M1 Abrams main battle tanks or a general replacement of tank guns and missiles. The Army’s programs are intended to add a directed-energy option for particular air-defense missions. Their power, cooling and tracking requirements, along with their different stages of development, make them complements to existing defenses rather than proof that conventional weapons are obsolete.
