Meta’s Muse is designed so the agent that acts for you never holds the passwords and tokens it uses. Meta says each user’s agent runs in a dedicated cloud VM, its runtime is separated from the host and from secret storage, and a mediation layer called Sentinel inserts real credentials only at the network boundary, after authorization. Sentinel can also pause an action until you approve it directly. That design targets one specific risk: an agent, or an instruction smuggled in through a web page or message, extracting a usable password. It does not make your data private from Meta. Meta says its launch architecture does not prevent the company from accessing user data when that is needed to support, secure, or operate Muse. Two recent reports also raise separate questions, one about local message access on Mac and one about information concerning people who never signed up.
What Muse does, and why that changes the security question
Muse is an agent that takes action rather than only answering questions. Meta says it can use connected apps, browse the web, fill in forms, and continue tasks in the background, including after you close the app. An agent that works inside your accounts needs some form of access to them. The useful security question is therefore not whether it has access, but where that access is held, who can reach it, and what stops a misled agent from using it.

A dedicated VM for each user
Each user has a dedicated cloud VM that holds the Muse workspace and connected-service data. Meta describes the execution environment as a Linux runtime container separated from the host, with secrets kept outside that runtime. Meta also calls the VM the system of record for information placed in Muse.
Surrogate tokens and the Sentinel boundary
When a request needs a credential, the runtime works with a surrogate token rather than the real one. Sentinel evaluates the destination and request details, then replaces the surrogate with the real credential at the network boundary, and only after authorization. Meta says the main agent never sees the real token, and it presents this as the reason prompt injection cannot extract secrets: the agent never holds them. In Meta’s words: “The agent never sees real tokens, which means any attempt to coerce the agent to reveal the actual secrets via prompt-injection or otherwise is futile.”
Sentinel also uses data-flow tracking. Meta says this lets it distinguish processes that have touched user data from clean ones, so the same destination can be treated differently depending on what a process is carrying.
Approvals and scoped permissions
When Sentinel requires approval, execution stops. The client shows you the requested action directly, and your decision returns to Sentinel, which permits or rejects the operation. Meta says approvals travel through the client rather than through the agent’s conversation, so a chat message cannot stand in for your consent. Permission grants are scoped by connector, destination, and use case, with options such as one-time or task-scoped permission.

Where each control stops
The layers protect different things. This table separates what Meta describes from what that description does not reach, based on Meta’s technical post of September 8, 2026.
| Control | What Meta describes | What it does not cover |
|---|---|---|
| Runtime isolation | Linux container separated from the host; secrets stored outside the runtime | Operational access by Meta; see the privacy section below |
| Surrogate tokens and Sentinel | The agent holds a placeholder; the real credential is inserted at the network boundary after authorization | Content the agent reads and returns; the credential layer does not govern that data |
| Data-flow tracking | Separates processes that have touched user data from clean ones | Not stated: independent testing of how accurately processes are classified |
| Direct approval | Execution pauses; the request is shown in the client, not the chat | Depends on you reading the requested action before you approve it |
| Scoped permissions | Scoped by connector, destination, and use case; one-time or task-scoped options | Not stated: the default scope applied when a grant is created, or how long a broad grant persists |
Browser work and purchases
For browsing, Muse uses a Chromium-based browser. A browser sub-agent works from an accessibility-tree snapshot of the page rather than the raw page DOM. Meta says the agent pauses when you take over the browser, and while secure credential storage fills a form, so the form is completed by that storage rather than by the agent.
For purchases, Meta says it asks for approval at checkout. At launch it named Stripe Link and described single-use card numbers for purchases. Shop Pay was announced as coming soon.

What “never sees your password” covers and what it does not
What the design protects: credentials, from the agent
Credentials are kept away from the agent’s runtime, and therefore away from any instruction that manipulates the agent. This is the part of Meta’s claim it emphasizes most. It is still a claim about one category of exposure.

What it does not protect: data, from operational access
Meta’s technical post says operational policies restrict personnel access to user data. It then adds that those policies do not prevent access when needed to support, secure, or operate the service. In practice, the design keeps secrets from the agent, not from the operator. A user who wants protection from Meta itself would need the separate Confidential VM described below, and that feature is not yet generally available.
What it does not address: the content the agent reads
Credential isolation says nothing about what the agent reads, remembers, or sends for inference. Meta says limited data may leave the VM for inference and telemetry. A personal agent that reads your messages, files, and accounts will handle that content whether or not its credentials are protected.
The Confidential VM is planned, not a current guarantee
Meta describes a separate Confidential VM with cryptographic protections that it says would prevent Meta access in a verifiable way. In the September 8, 2026 technical post, that system was being tested with a small group, and audits and broader availability were described as still to come. Until Meta confirms general availability, Muse’s privacy position rests on operational policy, not on cryptographic exclusion.
Reported concerns: Mac message access and non-users
Two recent reports go beyond Meta’s own description. Neither establishes the mechanism behind what it describes, and neither has been confirmed as resolved, so treat both as reported concerns rather than settled findings.

Local Messages access on Mac
Tom’s Hardware, reporting on September 30, 2026, summarized an allegation by journalist Jason Aten. He said Muse on Mac appeared to synchronize rows from the local Messages database, even though the agent had not been granted full-disk access. The report said the cause was unclear.
If the reported behavior is confirmed, the data would have moved on the user’s own computer, outside the cloud-side controls described above. That is why the reported absence of full-disk access matters: it is the permission a user would reasonably expect to gate this kind of read.
Instructions that create pages about people
Tom’s Guide, in an October 2026 report, described how researcher Karan Joshi extracted Muse instructions that create a page for each person in a user’s life. The report says this could include people who never signed up for Muse. It did not show a single company-wide profile covering every non-user, and each customer’s VM is described as separate. The concern is narrower but real: when you discuss someone, information about that person can enter your agent’s context and may be kept there.
What the evidence settles and what it does not
On the point it targets, the design is specific: keep raw credentials away from the agent, mediate outbound actions, and require approval for sensitive steps. Meta is also candid about the limits of the system. In Meta’s technical post, Tarek Sheasha, listed as Software Engineer & VP, Meta Superintelligence Labs, wrote: “Like any AI system, Muse will sometimes make mistakes.”

Several questions remain open: whether operational access is constrained beyond policy, whether the Confidential VM reaches general availability and independent audit, what caused the Mac Messages behavior and whether it has been fixed, and how information about non-users is handled in practice. No independent usage, breach-rate, or security-effectiveness statistic for Muse appears in the reporting cited here.
Meta’s 2026 bug bounty offers up to $300,000 for valid reports, and up to $130,000 for successful prompt-injection attempts affecting one user. These are maximum awards. They are not an incident rate, a safety score, or a validation result, and they cannot be used to infer how often Muse is attacked or compromised.
How to test any personal agent’s security claims
Meta calls its launch design “first-of-its-kind.” That is a company claim, and the reporting cited here includes no direct test against other agents. Judge Muse and any competitor on the same questions, and verify each product separately:
