The design uses confidential virtual machines (CVMs), hardware attestation, anonymous authentication and user-key encryption for persistent memory. It is intended to solve the hardest privacy gap in cloud AI: protecting data while it is actively being processed.
What Meta announced
AI glasses can continuously understand a wearer’s surroundings, but their compact hardware cannot run the largest AI models locally. Meta’s Private Processing architecture moves those workloads into attested confidential virtual machines (CVMs) in its cloud. A trusted execution environment (TEE) encrypts CVM memory and isolates it from the host operating system, hypervisor and infrastructure operator.

Meta describes three TEE guarantees:
- Data confidentiality: information in protected memory is not readable by the surrounding host.
- Data integrity: the workload and its data cannot be silently altered by the host.
- Code integrity: the device can verify that the approved software is running before it sends context.
Meta Engineering calls confidential computing the way to address data in use. Encryption at rest protects stored files, and encryption in transit protects network connections, but conventional cloud services still decrypt data in host memory to calculate an answer. Private Processing is designed to keep that memory protected during computation.

Identity is separated from the request
The glasses obtain anonymous, blind-signed credentials. They connect through a third-party Oblivious HTTP relay operated by Fastly or Cloudflare, so the authentication service cannot associate an individual request with the wearer’s account. This reduces account-level identity exposure, although network systems can still handle operational metadata needed to deliver traffic.

The glasses verify the cloud before sending context
The device receives a hardware-signed certificate from the server’s TEE and checks the workload’s binary hash against an independent, public transparency ledger. If the certificate or hash check fails, the glasses do not establish the protected connection.

The TEE processes the encrypted request
Only after attestation does the device send context for processing. Meta says its routing infrastructure cannot read the encrypted blob and that Meta itself cannot inspect the data inside the TEE. The claim depends on the TEE hardware, attestation chain and approved software continuing to operate as designed.

Persistent state leaves as ciphertext
Features that need memory across sessions can encrypt their output with a key supplied by the user before it leaves the TEE. Meta stores ciphertext; the TEE can decrypt it only when the device presents the key. That arrangement is intended to support recall without giving Meta a plaintext copy of the memory.

Which AI-glasses features this is meant to support
Meta names streaming transcription, contextual search and long-term recall as workloads that can be offloaded safely. Its AI-glasses infrastructure descriptions also cover real-time scene understanding, such as identifying a building or reading a sign, and assistance tailored to what the wearer is seeing and hearing.
Meta presents Private Processing as a foundation for future stateful, multimodal and agentic glasses that can remember context between sessions and take actions across real-world situations. Those agentic capabilities are a stated future direction, not a report of a generally available feature today.

The architecture does not eliminate every privacy concern. Identity separation, attestation, key handling, metadata leakage, workload performance, independent auditability and regional availability remain separate questions.

What is publicly verifiable—and what is not
Meta says every production CVM image is registered in an append-only, publicly witnessed ledger. It says corresponding binaries are available to researchers under agreement, and that independent firms including NCC Group review the architecture and attestation logic. Meta is also expanding its bug-bounty scope to include Private Processing on AI glasses.

TEE isolation changes how the service can be monitored. Because operators cannot inspect protected memory, Meta says its observability system uses aggregate signals such as CPU utilization, memory allocation, network latency and aggregate hardware-failure rates rather than user payloads.
Meta’s public material describes the architecture and validation mechanisms, but it does not provide an independent quantitative benchmark for end-to-end latency, recognition accuracy or the real-world privacy risk of this glasses deployment. Those measurements should not be inferred from the existence of attestation alone.

How this relates to WhatsApp Private Processing
Meta introduced Private Processing for WhatsApp in April 2025 as an optional TEE-based environment for tasks including unread-thread summaries and writing suggestions. The stated promise was that neither Meta nor WhatsApp could access message contents during processing. The glasses announcement extends the same confidential-computing idea to continuous, multimodal context.
In February 2026, NVIDIA said Meta had adopted NVIDIA Confidential Computing for WhatsApp private processing and planned to expand confidential-compute capabilities to other Meta use cases. That statement establishes broader infrastructure cooperation, but it does not identify the exact hardware used for the glasses deployment.
What owners of Meta’s glasses should still consider
The relevant consumer hardware category is Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses. Meta’s Gen 2 announcement describes improved battery life and video capture for that line, but price, stock, model selection and regional availability can change and should be checked separately at purchase time.

Private Processing protects a request after the glasses send it to an attested cloud workload; it does not change the physical act of capturing someone nearby. Meta’s responsible-innovation guidance says captures remain on the glasses until the user moves them to a phone with the Meta AI app. Capture and notification LEDs signal recording. Meta advises asking nearby people for permission and avoiding places where there is an expectation of privacy.
What the announcement means
Meta is extending the device trust boundary into its cloud rather than insisting that every useful model run on the glasses. The important technical change is protection of data in use, combined with a device-side decision about which cloud workload is trustworthy. If the attestation check fails, the glasses refuse to send context; if a feature needs memory, user-key encryption is intended to keep stored state unreadable to Meta.
That is a stronger privacy design than ordinary encrypted cloud inference, but it is still an architecture and verification promise rather than a published performance or risk guarantee. Independent measurements, long-term audits and details about availability by model and region will determine how broadly the system can be relied upon.
