Mick Gordon on Making Boltgun 2’s Final Boss Music “Big and Bombastic”

Mick Gordon wrote the original final-boss music for Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2 after contacting Auroch Digital about the first game. The resulting “Ascent of the Arkifane” (described by the composer as industrial synth-metal with humour) accompanies the climactic battle against Vashtorr the Arkifane, combining dread, extreme heaviness and Warhammer’s deliberately camp, strange spectacle.

How Mick Gordon became involved

Gordon initiated the relationship after playing the first Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun. He told Auroch that the game had successfully combined a pixelated, sprite-based boomer shooter with the Warhammer 40,000 setting. For the sequel, the studio invited him to write music for a much larger finale than anything in the original.

Auroch’s official FAQ describes the assignment directly: “We invited Mick to create an original musical track for our final boss battle in Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2.” The studio wanted the encounter to sound “really big and bombastic and silly,” not like a routine combat track.

What song plays during the final boss?

“Ascent of the Arkifane”

Wall of Sound identifies Gordon’s piece as “Ascent of the Arkifane.” It was written for Vashtorr the Arkifane, the antagonist at the centre of the climactic showdown. The official Steam announcement describes Gordon’s contribution as a suite of cues for the battle, while Auroch’s FAQ calls it an original musical track. Taken together, those descriptions indicate a boss sequence built from related material rather than a song presented only as a detached album recording.

  • Includes 23 Space Marines: 1 Captain with Relic Shield, 1 Librarian, 1 Chaplain with Jump Pack, 1 Ancient, 10 Intercessors, 5 Vanguard Veterans with Jump Packs, 3 Eradicators with Heavy Bolters, and 1 Land Speeder
  • Also included are 38 Orks: 20 Ork Boyz, 10 Gretchin, 1 Warboss, 1 Bannernob, 1 Bigboss, 1 Painboy with 1 Grot Orderly, 1 Weirdboy, 1 Wartrakk, 1 Big Mek Dakkarig
  • One 114 page hardcover Armageddon: Operation Imperator book, 88 Page Core rules booklet, Chapter Approved 2026-27: Mission Deck 88 cards, 89 Cards Dominatus Narrative Campaign Deck,
  • 17 Armageddon datasheet cards. Armageddon Transfer Sheet: 728 high-quality waterslide transfers to decorate your miniatures.
  • These miniatures are unpainted and need to be assembled. We recommend using Citadel Plastic Glue and Citadel Paints.

The finished sound is described as industrial synth-metal with a sense of humour. Steam characterises Gordon’s musical personification of Vashtorr as full of dread and danger, while the interview stresses that the music also has to fit the game’s exaggerated pixel-art presentation.

Heavy, angry, camp and strange

Gordon summed up the creative problem this way: “How do you make something really big, heavy and angry but also have this sense of campiness and weirdness.” That tension is central to Boltgun 2: the music must sell the scale of a Chaos spectacle without losing the knowingly over-the-top tone of a retro shooter.

He also says he avoids repeating a personal formula: “I try to on every single project to capture the sound that is unique to that project. The thing that makes it separate from everything else. My goal isn’t to just turn up and do the same thing on every project. I’m not doing an impersonation of myself.” For this game, that means shaping the metal and industrial textures around Vashtorr and the series’ pixel-era humour.

Is Gordon’s music in the whole game?

The confirmed Gordon commission is the final-boss material. Auroch’s wording specifies an original track for the final boss, and Steam refers to a suite of cues for that showdown. The available announcements do not credit him with the entire Boltgun 2 score, so it is more accurate to describe his work as the climactic boss music rather than the soundtrack for every level.

How the music can react to gameplay

Gordon’s broader approach to game audio helps explain why a boss cue can feel connected to the fight. He describes a long composition divided into segments that can be rearranged as the player acts. The game can respond to conditions such as health, level progression, boss status and performance, changing the musical state as the encounter develops.

In his description, the player is “literally in control” and “the conductor.” This is a general explanation of his adaptive-music philosophy, not a published technical breakdown of every trigger used in Boltgun 2. It does, however, distinguish interactive game scoring from a fixed track that plays identically from beginning to end.

Who is the final boss?

The final confrontation is with Vashtorr the Arkifane, a Chaos antagonist whose presence defines Gordon’s commissioned music. Auroch says the character’s musical personification is “full of dread and danger,” giving the battle a different sonic identity from ordinary firefights and exploration.

What is Boltgun 2, and where can you play it?

Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2 is Auroch Digital’s fast-paced sequel to its retro FPS. It launched on 14 October 2026 for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. A Nintendo Switch 2 version is confirmed for a later release, but the FAQ does not give a launch date.

The sequel adds a second playable character, Sister of Battle Nyra Veyrath, alongside Ultramarine Malum Caedo. It also includes four Chaos factions, branching narrative elements and a navigation guide/map feature. The game is single-player.

Is there a physical edition or soundtrack to buy?

Auroch’s FAQ says Boltgun 2 is a digital-only release and that no physical edition is planned at the moment. The same published information does not announce a separately sold official soundtrack. Therefore, buyers should not assume that a boxed game or standalone Gordon album is available unless Auroch or a platform later announces one.

Why the collaboration matters

The partnership gives the sequel’s finale a clearly defined musical purpose: Vashtorr’s encounter needs to feel larger than the first game while remaining faithful to the series’ pixel-art, boomer-shooter identity. Gordon’s role is not simply to add heavier music; it is to make industrial aggression, danger, camp and weirdness coexist inside an interactive boss sequence.
