Short answer: Meta says chats with Meta AI can be used to train its models. ChatGPT may use eligible personal-account conversations to improve models unless you turn off “Improve the model for everyone.” Neither choice is the same as deleting chat history, and temporary modes do not necessarily mean immediate erasure from every system. Which service is more private depends on your account, settings, and what kind of data handling matters to you.

Training use and saved history are separate controls
Meta AI
Meta’s April 2026 filing says content from chats with Meta AI—including photos and text—is among the data used to train its models. It separately says private messages between friends and family are not used for AI training unless a participant chooses to share them with an AI. That distinction matters: chatting with Meta AI is not the same as sending a private message to another person.

Meta’s privacy explainer, updated November 21, 2025, says information shared with its generative AI features may be used to improve products and for other purposes. It also says an AI may retain information within a chat to personalize responses and that some questions may be shared with trusted partners, such as search providers. This does not establish that all queries are shared.

ChatGPT
On an eligible personal account, turn off “Improve the model for everyone” to stop new conversations from being used to train OpenAI models. The setting applies across signed-in devices, but available controls depend on whether you are signed in, your plan, and any workspace settings.
Turning model improvement off does not remove chats from history. OpenAI’s Data Controls page explains the distinction between that setting and deleting conversations. Regular and archived saved chats remain in the account until you delete them or an applicable workspace retention policy removes them.

What temporary chat means—and what it does not
Meta AI Incognito Chat
On May 13, 2026, Meta announced Incognito Chat for WhatsApp and the Meta AI app. Meta describes the feature as processing messages in a secure environment it says even Meta cannot access; conversations are not saved and messages disappear by default. Meta said rollout would take place over the coming months, so the feature may not be available to every user, app, or region. These are Meta’s product claims, not independent verification. ChatGPT Temporary Chats
Temporary Chats stay out of chat history, do not create or update memories, and are not used to improve models while temporary. OpenAI says it may keep a copy for up to 30 days for safety. Deleting a chat is not always the same as immediate backend erasure
ChatGPT deletion
Deleting a saved ChatGPT conversation removes it from your account view immediately. OpenAI says permanent deletion is scheduled within 30 days, except where the content has already been de-identified and disassociated or security or legal reasons require longer retention. Meta AI deletion
Meta’s available deletion controls depend on the app and may change. The older Meta explainer describes /reset-ai for information shared with AI chats, but it does not establish a current, universal deletion process or timeline. Look for the latest controls in the specific Meta AI surface you use rather than assuming that removing a chat from view erases every retained copy.

Who may access or receive conversation data?
Meta
Meta’s older explainer says some questions may be shared with trusted partners, including search providers, but it does not say that every query is shared. Its 2026 filing addresses training practices. These disclosures should not be read as a claim that Meta uses every private person-to-person message for AI training.
OpenAI
OpenAI says a limited number of authorized personnel and service providers may access content for specified support, security, legal, or model-improvement purposes. It says service providers are subject to confidentiality and security obligations, and that it does not share chat content for advertising or marketing or sell user data. How to choose based on your privacy priority
- You want to limit ChatGPT training use: switch off “Improve the model for everyone” in Data Controls. Delete any saved chats you no longer want in history.
- You need a non-training default for organizational work: OpenAI says Business, Enterprise, Edu, and Healthcare workspace data is not used for training by default. Organization settings may govern retention and access, so follow your workspace administrator’s rules.
- You want a temporary ChatGPT conversation: use Temporary Chat, remembering that OpenAI may retain a copy for up to 30 days for safety.
- You want to use Meta AI in a temporary mode: check whether Incognito Chat is available in your WhatsApp or Meta AI app and region; Meta’s announcement does not establish universal availability.
- You are deciding whether to share sensitive material: do not treat a training opt-out, a disappearing message, or a chat removed from view as proof that no copy can be retained or accessed under the service’s stated policies.
Is Meta AI or ChatGPT more private?
There is no single winner across every account and privacy concern. Meta’s filing says Meta AI chat content can be used for training, while ChatGPT offers a personal-account setting that stops new conversations from being used for training and workspaces that are excluded by default. ChatGPT’s history and deletion behavior are more explicitly described in the cited controls, while Meta has announced an Incognito Chat mode whose availability may still vary. Compare the particular app, account type, settings, and retention behavior you will actually use—not just the brand name.
