Dawn of War: Definitive Edition is a modernized collection of the original real-time strategy game and its expansions; Dawn of War IV is a new sequel, not a remaster or upgrade. As of October 7, 2026, the publisher lists Dawn of War IV for December 3 on Steam for Windows PC, so Definitive Edition is the one to choose if you want to play the classic campaigns now.

What’s in Definitive Edition?
Definitive Edition gathers the original Dawn of War and its expansions into one package: four campaigns, nine armies and more than 100 maps for skirmish and multiplayer, according to Warhammer Community. It is the choice for playing the established games, rather than for a new sequel’s story.

The modernization is aimed at making those games work on contemporary PCs. Relic design director Philippe Boulle described the collection as packaging the original games’ content into a single package that “works on modern machines.” The stated changes include higher-resolution art, widescreen and 4K play, a raised and adjustable camera, 64-bit support and pathfinding work. These are updates to the classic experience, not a new game design.
#1 Best Overall
- Put new units for the Space Marines, Ork, Eldar, and Tyranid armies and two new last stand heroes to work for you on the battlefield.
- This expansion allows you to continue your fight against the enemies of the Emperor and use your squads’ wargear, abilities, and experience to battle Chaos in 15 new missions.
- New ice planet graphics set increases visual diversity and adds 7 new multiplayer maps while six-player online multiplayer and a raised level cap of 30 allows for even more glory and devastating abilities.
- New single player mechanic allows you to equip incredibly powerful equipment that corrupts your squad and will guide the story towards or away from the corrupting influence of Chaos.
- Swear loyalty to the Chaos Gods and play as the bloodthirsty Chaos Space Marines in multiplayer battles against both Chaos Rising and Dawn of War II owners.
The original Dawn of War’s strategy has its own identity: customizable squads and an economy built around capturing points across the map, rather than relying only on the familiar build-a-base formula. As Boulle put it, “No one chops wood in the 41st Millennium.”
What’s new in Dawn of War IV?
Dawn of War IV returns to the setting of Kronus with four announced launch factions: Space Marines, Orks, Necrons and Adeptus Mechanicus. Its four faction campaigns feed into a single narrative. Games Workshop’s August 19, 2025 announcement describes more than 70 missions playable solo or with a friend. That is an announced mission count, not a promise of a particular number of hours.

- Customize your hero’s weapons, items and abilities as they grow in power
- Personalize your army’s insignias, colors, banners and names
- Earn and unlock achievements and medals as you prove your superiority online in 29 NEW multi-player maps
- Includes all previous Dawn of War maps for a stunning 114 maps in total
- Groundbreaking Hybrid Expansion design allows Soulstorm to be played alone, or combine it with Dawn of War, Winter Assault, and Dark Crusade to create the largest RTS ever
Beyond the campaign, the announced modes include Skirmish, Last Stand and multiplayer. This makes Dawn of War IV more than a campaign-only follow-up, but the announced feature list does not establish how the finished game will perform or how its multiplayer will feel in practice.

PLAION’s support FAQ estimates the campaign at more than 20 hours and says playtime varies with player style and technical ability. Treat that as an estimate, not a measured or guaranteed duration. The publisher’s product page lists Standard Edition with the base game. Commander Edition is listed with the base game, a Blood Ravens Story Prologue, the AFTERMATH campaign expansion plus a new faction, and a digital soundtrack.

When does Dawn of War IV release?
As of October 7, 2026, Deep Silver’s current product page lists December 3, 2026, for Dawn of War IV on Steam for Windows PC. It lists Commander Edition early unlock beginning November 30. Those are the current release and edition details to use.
There is a conflicting date on the PLAION support FAQ: it still says September 17, 2026, names an Ultimate Edition and gives September 14 as its early-access date. Because that information conflicts with the current Deep Silver product page, do not treat the FAQ’s September dates or edition name as current.
Rank #4
- Real-time strategy game based on the popular table-top war game
- Vie for the survival of mankind or its ultimate destruction
- Control 1 of 4 unique races
- Improved resource model makes it easier to focus on frontline action
- Single player campaigns; Multiplayer for up to 8 via LAN or Internet
Should you buy Definitive Edition or wait for Dawn of War IV?
Choose Definitive Edition if…
- You want to play the original Dawn of War campaigns and expansions now.
- You value a larger set of classic armies and maps in one collection.
- You want the classic point-capture and customizable-squad style, updated for modern PCs.
Wait for Dawn of War IV if…
- You want a new story set on Kronus rather than a remastered version of the original games.
- The newly announced Space Marines, Orks, Necrons and Adeptus Mechanicus factions are the main draw.
- You want to see how the new campaign, co-op and multiplayer modes turn out at release.
These are different releases for different reasons to play. Dawn of War IV is not yet released as of October 7, 2026, and its final experience has not been independently evaluated here, so the announced feature list is not enough to call it objectively better than the established collection.
