Messenger disappearing messages are available only in end-to-end encrypted conversations. They make messages disappear from the chat after a timer expires, but they do not guarantee that nobody can save or capture the content. Meta’s published timing descriptions differ: a 2023 announcement says 24 hours after sending, while a March 2026 update describes a selected time after messages have been seen. Check the timer shown in your own encrypted conversation.
What disappearing messages do
The feature applies a time limit to messages in an eligible Messenger conversation. Meta says the setting is available only in end-to-end encrypted chats. In its December 2023 announcement, Meta said disappearing messages last 24 hours after they are sent. In its March 9, 2026 update, Meta described messages disappearing at a selected time after they have been seen.

Those descriptions do not establish one universal timer rule for every account or app version. Use the expiry option shown in the conversation rather than assuming that every message will disappear exactly 24 hours after sending.
How encryption and the timer differ
End-to-end encryption and message expiry address different things. Encryption protects message content as it travels between devices; the disappearing-message timer limits how long a message remains visible in the conversation. The timer does not itself make a chat encrypted. Meta announced that it was rolling out default end-to-end encryption for personal chats and calls in December 2023, and its 2024 explainer noted that some conversations could become encrypted before others.

That rollout context matters: do not assume that a conversation has the disappearing-message setting just because it is in Messenger. The feature requires an end-to-end encrypted conversation.
What happens when a message expires
Meta’s technical whitepaper describes a timeout associated with a disappearing message. Under the documented mechanics, both devices automatically hide messages with a timeout after it elapses. The paper also says plaintext is removed from local storage shortly after expiry, with an interim period supporting abuse reporting. This is a technical description from that document, not a complete statement of current server-side retention or every detail of today’s Messenger implementation. See Meta’s technical whitepaper.

In practical terms, “disappears” means the message is no longer shown as an ordinary visible message in the chat. It is not proof that no one can retain its contents: a recipient can remember or copy information, and another device can photograph the screen.

Meta says Messenger will notify users if it detects someone taking a screenshot of a disappearing message. The important qualification is “if it detects”: Meta does not claim that every capture method is detected. A photo taken with another device, for example, is not the same as a screenshot captured by Messenger. Do not treat the feature as screenshot-proof.

Older instructions are not current setup guidance. Meta’s 2020 description said people could enter vanish mode by swiping up in an existing chat, and that seen messages disappeared after leaving the thread. That refers to the former mode, not the current disappearing-message setting. For the current feature, use the encrypted-chat settings displayed in your app; Meta’s published updates do not establish one universal sequence of taps for every platform and version.
