Message Sequence Charts Explained: How to Read Them and When to Use One

A message sequence chart describes communication behavior through message exchanges. Learn how to read MSCs, where they are used, and how they differ from UML sequence diagrams.

A message sequence chart (MSC) describes how system components and their environment communicate by exchanging messages. ITU-T Recommendation Z.120 defines MSC syntax in both textual and graphical forms, making it a trace language for specifying or describing a communication scenario—not simply a picture of objects calling one another.

What a message sequence chart represents

An MSC captures a selected scenario, or trace, of communication among entities. It shows which participants exchange messages and the order in which those exchanges occur. A scenario may describe typical behavior or an exceptional case, so a chart can make both expected interactions and failure paths explicit.

ITU-T Recommendation Z.120 defines the notation as a language for specifying and describing communication behavior through message interchange. Its syntax can be written as text or shown graphically. The ITU-T lists the February 2011 edition of Z.120 as in force: ITU-T Recommendation Z.120.

How to read an MSC diagram

Start with the entities shown as participants, then follow the messages exchanged among them in sequence. The chart describes a communication trace: who takes part and how the message flow unfolds. Read the labels and structure according to MSC conventions rather than assuming that symbols carry the same meaning as in another diagram notation.

MSC is not limited to one straight-line exchange. ETSI’s overview describes language features for timers, loops, optional and alternative behavior, and exceptional behavior. For larger scenarios, a High Level MSC (HMSC) can organize references to atomic MSCs: the HMSC expresses sequences or alternatives, while each referenced MSC provides the detail of its own message exchange. See ETSI’s MSC overview.

What MSCs are used for

Teams use MSCs to specify requirements and interfaces, display simulation or validation traces, define test cases, and document real-time systems. Their value is clearest when a team needs to describe a particular communication scenario precisely, including alternatives or exceptional paths, rather than leave the interaction implicit in prose.

An MSC can also help connect a broad behavioral outline to detailed scenarios. An HMSC can show how smaller message-flow cases fit into a sequence or set of alternatives, while the referenced MSCs retain the detail needed to inspect each exchange.

MSC vs. UML sequence diagram

Both notations can depict interactions over time, but their conventions are not interchangeable. ETSI’s overview describes MSC vertical lines as autonomous execution entities, while UML sequence-diagram lifelines usually represent objects. It also characterizes an MSC arrow as an asynchronous message and a UML sequence-diagram arrow usually as a synchronous operation call. These are orientation-level distinctions; use the applicable notation specification when exact semantics matter.

Question MSC UML sequence diagram
What does a vertical line represent? An autonomous execution entity, according to ETSI’s overview. Usually an object, according to ETSI’s overview.
What does an arrow usually represent? An asynchronous message, according to ETSI’s overview. A synchronous operation call, according to ETSI’s overview.
What larger-pattern support is highlighted here? HMSCs can organize sequences or alternatives among referenced MSC scenarios. Not stated in the cited ETSI overview.

Choose based on the modeling task. MSC is a natural fit when the emphasis is communication traces between autonomous entities, asynchronous message exchange, or HMSC composition. A UML sequence diagram may fit better when the work is already organized around UML models and object interactions. For projects where subtle semantics matter, check the full standard or notation specification rather than relying on a short comparison.

Which Z.120 edition is current?

The ITU-T database identifies Recommendation Z.120 (02/2011) as in force. It also lists Z.120 Annex B (04/1998), concerning formal semantics, as in force; earlier main editions are shown as superseded or withdrawn. The status can change, so confirm it in the ITU-T Z-series component-status listing when citing the standard.

What you need to create an MSC

ETSI notes that MSCs can be drawn with ordinary graphics applications. Specialized MSC tools may help enforce standardized language elements and support diagram development and maintenance. The cited sources establish these tool categories, not the suitability or current features of any particular product. If conformance matters, use a workflow that lets you check the notation against Z.120 rather than relying on visual resemblance alone.
