Yes—macroalgae can be used to make porous carbon for adsorption, and a 2026 study reports micro-mesoporous activated carbon made from Sargassum spp. But “algal adsorbent” and “mesoporous material” are not interchangeable: the pore structure and performance depend on the particular material and preparation, and current evidence does not establish one seaweed-derived material as a universal winner.
What “mesoporous” means—and why it matters
Mesoporous materials are conventionally defined by pores 2–50 nm in diameter, according to a 2024 review of mesoporous-material synthesis and applications (Kausar et al., 2024). Activated carbon can contain more than one pore-size class: a material described as micro-mesoporous has both micropores and mesopores. The label alone does not say how much of each type it contains or how well it will capture a particular contaminant.

Macroalgae are seaweeds; they should not be confused with microalgae, which are a different feedstock category. The literature includes both, but the clearest macroalgae-specific result in the sources here concerns Sargassum-derived activated carbon. Reviews also discuss a wider range of algal adsorbents and seaweed-derived carbon, so their findings should not all be attributed to the same feedstock or pore structure.
What has been made from macroalgae
Sargassum-derived micro-mesoporous activated carbon
A 2026 article in Desalination and Water Treatment reports activated carbons made from Sargassum spp. and describes them as micro-mesoporous. It reports specific surface areas from 315.43 to 1382.20 m²/g and says preparation factors affect the materials’ physical properties (2026 study).

That range is not a ranking of adsorption performance. The indexed information available for the study does not specify which preparation conditions produced each value, the surface-area measurement method, the pore-size distributions, or the corresponding adsorption results. Surface area is one material property; it cannot by itself establish which sample will work best for a given water contaminant.
Other seaweed-derived porous carbons and adsorbents
A 2021 review describes carbonizing seaweed-derived components such as carrageenan, chitosan, and alginate to produce porous carbon, with water purification among the applications discussed (Green Chemistry review). This supports a broader seaweed-derived-carbon pathway, but does not mean every such carbon is mesoporous or that each component is equivalent to whole macroalgal biomass.

A 2022 review covers engineered macroalgal and microalgal adsorbents—including hydrochar, biochar, and activated carbon—for hazardous water contaminants (Journal of Hazardous Materials review). “Algal adsorbent” is a broader category than mesoporous carbon: it can include materials whose pore structure is not established as mesoporous.

General reviews of mesoporous materials describe route families such as hydrothermal and microwave synthesis, sol-gel processing, phase conversion, and hard- or soft-template-assisted methods (Kausar et al., 2024; Li et al., 2023). These are broad methods used across mesoporous-material research, not a verified recipe list for converting macroalgae. The sources cited here do not establish that each route has been demonstrated with seaweed feedstock, or provide a complete, reproducible Sargassum protocol.

- FOR CHEMICAL AQUARIUM FILTRATION: Black Diamond Premium Activated Carbon removes odors, discoloration and impurities for clear, sparkling aquarium water.
- SPECIALLY FORMULATED: Composed of heat-activated, bituminous coal-based carbon.
- EFFICIENT: Specially sized – keeps on working long after other carbons quit.
- FOR ALL FILTERS: Ideal for use in all aquarium filters.

For that reason, a route name alone is not enough to reproduce or compare a result. A meaningful report needs to identify the species or feedstock, pretreatment, conversion and activation steps, and the resulting pore structure. Do not infer temperatures, chemicals, yields, costs, or scale-up performance from general mesoporous-material reviews when those details are not reported for the specific macroalgal process.
Where the evidence is strongest: adsorption and water treatment
Water-contaminant adsorption is the most directly supported application area in the macroalgae-focused sources. The 2022 review examines algal adsorbents for hazardous water contaminants, while the 2021 review discusses seaweed-derived porous carbon for water purification (2022 review; 2021 review). These reviews establish research interest and reported studies, not commercial readiness or a single material that will treat every water stream.

Another approach is to immobilize activated carbon in a composite using alginate, chitosan, or related macromolecules. A 2020 review covers such composites for removing water contaminants and identifies a gap in column experiments (International Journal of Biological Macromolecules review). This is a different design question from making the carbon itself from macroalgae: a biopolymer may serve as an immobilizing agent, and that fact alone does not establish that the carbon feedstock was seaweed.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMesoporous materials in general are also studied for areas including energy storage, photocatalysis, water splitting, sensing, adsorption, and desalination (Kausar et al., 2024). Those are broad field-level application areas; they should not be presented as demonstrated uses of macroalgae-derived mesoporous carbon without evidence for the specific material and application.

How to judge a macroalgae-derived adsorbent
Before comparing a seaweed-derived material with another adsorbent, check whether the study reports the properties that connect its recipe to its intended use:
- Feedstock: species, source, and any pretreatment used.
- Conversion route: carbonization, activation, or another synthesis method, with the conditions actually reported.
- Pore structure: whether the material is microporous, mesoporous, or micro-mesoporous, supported by pore-size information rather than a label alone.
- Surface area: reported value and measurement method; do not treat area as a substitute for adsorption testing.
- Target and test conditions: the contaminant, water chemistry, and experimental conditions used to measure adsorption.
- Practical handling: whether the material can be recovered and reused, and whether its physical form suits the intended treatment setup.
- Evidence beyond a batch result: regeneration, reuse, column tests, and scale or cost evidence where relevant.
The available sources do not support a universal best macroalgae-derived material or a general claim that it outperforms commercial activated carbon. Those comparisons require matched tests for the target contaminant and water conditions, plus evidence about reuse and deployment—not just a high surface-area figure.
What is established—and what remains open
There is a credible research basis for making porous carbon and adsorbents from macroalgae, with the most specific cited example being micro-mesoporous activated carbon from Sargassum spp. The reported surface-area range makes the material worth investigating, while reviews broaden the picture to seaweed-derived porous carbon and engineered algal adsorbents for water treatment.
The evidence cited here does not establish a complete, reproducible process for the reported Sargassum samples, a single best pore structure, broad superiority to existing adsorbents, or commercial deployment. A 2024 review of macroalgae valorization discusses polymers, chemicals, and energy as broader ways to use seaweed biomass, but that broader valorization context does not by itself prove the economics or scale of mesoporous-carbon production (Biomass and Bioenergy review).
