A 2017 laboratory study showed how lithium can help convert nitrogen and water into ammonia through a stepwise electrochemical cycle. It reported promising selectivity, but did not demonstrate a commercial process or prove that the ammonia would have lower lifecycle emissions. Lithium is cycled through several chemical forms; it is not simply added as a catalyst to a one-step reaction.
How does the lithium process make ammonia?
The method separates nitrogen reduction from the later step that supplies hydrogen to form ammonia. That separation is intended to limit the hydrogen-evolution reaction (HER), which competes with ammonia production in conventional aqueous electrochemical approaches.

- Make lithium metal: Electrolyze lithium hydroxide to produce lithium metal.
- Capture nitrogen: Expose the lithium to nitrogen, forming lithium nitride.
- Release ammonia and regenerate the starting material: React lithium nitride with water. This releases ammonia and returns lithium hydroxide to the cycle.
The researchers reported using nitrogen and water at atmospheric pressure. The paper describes the operating temperature as reasonable, while a 2017 Chemistry World report describes the nitridation step as occurring at room temperature. Those conditions concern demonstrated steps, not a fully optimized integrated plant.
What did the 2017 study demonstrate?
McEnaney and colleagues reported an initial current efficiency of 88.5% toward ammonia in their 2017 paper in Energy & Environmental Science. Current efficiency indicates how selectively electrical charge went toward ammonia in the demonstrated process. It is not an overall energy-efficiency figure, a commercial production yield, or a measurement of lifecycle greenhouse-gas emissions.
#1 Best Overall
- Helps monitor and adjust ammonia level and prevent invisible water problems that can be harmful to fish
- Accurately reads ammonia 0 - 8 ppm (mg/L)
- Fish continually release ammonia and uneaten food and decaying organic matter also add ammonia to water
- Use several times a week when starting a new aquarium then weekly or when problem arise
The paper also said the work was approaching industrial-level electrolytic current densities. That characterization does not establish production at industrial scale. The study’s abstract and publication details explain the rationale: the stepwise method separates nitrogen reduction from subsequent protonation to ammonia, helping it avoid the HER that commonly dominates aqueous electrochemical approaches.
Why might this route matter?
Because the process uses electricity, it could potentially be paired with renewable power. The authors also identify localized production as a possibility. These are prospective advantages: the available publications do not establish lower cost, dependable continuous operation, or lower lifecycle emissions for this process.

- Professional Quality Testing Kit: The AAwipes Aquarium test kit (50 strips) is developed by experts for fish enthusiasts. It offers 8-in-1 testing capabilities, made with high-quality fiber paper and non-bleeding colors. The kit measures key parameters like Free Chlorine, Nitrate, Nitrite, Hardness, Sodium Chloride, Total Alkalinity, pH and Ammonia nitrogen. By identifying potential issues, our fish tank testing kit helps prevent hidden water problems and ensures the safety and well-being of your fish.
- Versatile Use for Freshwater and Ponds: This aquarium water test kit is versatile and suitable for both freshwater and saltwater environments. It can be used in various aquariums, fish tanks, ponds, pools, and shrimp tanks, making it easy to monitor water quality and ensure your filter functions properly. Experts recommend testing your aquarium water at least twice a week to maintain optimal water quality.
- Fast and Accurate Results: Get accurate results in minutes with just 3 steps: 1) Dip the test strip into water for 2 seconds for pads 1-7; dip pad 8 (Ammonia nitrogen) separately for 5 seconds. 2) Remove the strip without shaking off excess water. Hold horizontally for 30 seconds for pads 1-7, wait 180 seconds to read Pad 8 (Ammonia nitrogen). 3) Compare the colors to the chart for up to 99% accuracy and take necessary action.
- Extended Shelf Life: The test strips are packaged in a well-sealed bottle to ensure they remain effective over time. This protects the strips from moisture and other environmental factors, ensuring you have reliable testing materials on hand when needed.
- Convenient Use: With this kit, you can test your aquarium water at home without the need to send samples to a lab, saving you both time and money. Enjoy peace of mind knowing your aquarium water is balanced and safe without the stress or extra expense.
Ammonia is an important industrial chemical, and its production has a substantial climate footprint. Chemistry World’s 2017 report says ammonia production is responsible for up to 3% of global CO₂ emissions; the report passage does not identify the underlying calculation or its original statistical source, so this figure should be understood as that report’s attribution rather than an independently verified primary statistic.
To judge whether a new route is genuinely more sustainable than Haber–Bosch or other low-carbon options, a comparison would need to account for electricity use and its carbon intensity, pressure and temperature, conversion and selectivity, throughput and current density, durability, process integration, and full lifecycle emissions. The available sources do not provide a resolved commercial comparison across those factors.

What remains uncertain about scale and sustainability?
The 2017 report explicitly noted that scaling the laboratory demonstration to industrially feasible production would be challenging. A 2024 review places the stepwise lithium route among ongoing efforts to bridge distinct stepwise and continuous electrolytic approaches. A 2021 study on closed-loop electrolyte design is another example of later research; it is not evidence that the 2017 process has reached commercial deployment.
Accordingly, the work is best understood as a research pathway that could be electrified—not as a replacement for Haber–Bosch or a proven sustainable manufacturing method. Demonstrating climate benefits would require evidence about the whole process, including electricity supply and lifecycle emissions, in addition to successful ammonia synthesis.
