Neither mesh Wi-Fi nor a single router is inherently more secure. Both can support a secure home network when configured and maintained well; the better choice is the setup that covers your home and gives you security controls you can manage. Compare the system’s encryption, updates, administrative access, firewall, guest network, and options for separating IoT devices—not the number of access points alone.
Does mesh Wi-Fi improve security?
Mesh Wi-Fi adds access points to extend coverage, but adding nodes does not, by itself, make a network more secure. The Federal Trade Commission’s guidance applies to home routers and wireless networks generally, while NIST’s consumer-router cybersecurity profile is not a controlled comparison of mesh and single-router setups. Neither establishes a security winner based on topology.

In either setup, secure the equipment that routes traffic and provides wireless access. A mesh system may spread those functions across several devices, so check that you can apply and maintain the relevant settings throughout the system. An app-based setup is not evidence of stronger security.

| What to compare | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Coverage | Identify rooms or areas where the signal is weak, then choose the access-point arrangement that addresses them. The reviewed guidance sets no universal home-size threshold or mesh-node count. |
| Wi-Fi encryption | Look for WPA3 Personal. If older devices need it, WPA2 Personal is an option; NSA guidance also describes WPA2/3 for mixed device support. |
| Updates and support | Check how software updates are delivered and whether the manufacturer or ISP still supports the equipment. Support duration varies by product; the reviewed sources establish no universal period. |
| Administrative controls | Check whether you can change default credentials and disable remote management, WPS, or UPnP when you do not need them. |
| Network protections | Look for an enabled firewall, a guest network, and—if available—ways to separate IoT devices from your primary network. |
| Ease of maintenance | Choose a system whose settings you can understand and keep current across its routing and access-point equipment. |
Secure whichever setup you choose
- Choose compatible encryption. Set WPA3 Personal if your router and devices support it. Use WPA2 Personal when needed for compatibility, and set a strong Wi-Fi passphrase.
- Replace default credentials. Set a unique administrator password and Wi-Fi password, and change the default network name.
- Update the equipment. Apply available router software updates. For ISP-provided equipment, check with your provider about how updates are handled.
- Disable features you do not use. Turn off remote management, WPS, and UPnP if they are not needed.
- Use the network controls available to you. Enable the firewall, create separate guest access, and separate IoT devices from the primary network where supported.
- End the session securely. Log out of the administrator account after changing settings.
These measures reflect the FTC’s home Wi-Fi recommendations and NSA guidance on wireless encryption and network separation.
#1 Best Overall
- Wi-Fi 6 Mesh Wi-Fi - Next-gen Wi-Fi 6 AX3000 whole home mesh system to eliminate weak Wi-Fi for good(2×2/HE160 2402 Mbps plus 2×2 574 Mbps)
- Whole Home WiFi Coverage - Covers up to 6500 square feet with seamless high-performance Wi-Fi 6 and eliminate dead zones and buffering. Better than traditional WiFi booster and Range Extenders
- Connect More Devices - Deco X55(3-pack) is strong enough to connect up to 150 devices with strong and reliable Wi-Fi
- Our Cybersecurity Commitment - TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement
- More Gigabit Ports - Each Deco X55 has 3 Gigabit Ethernet ports(6 in total for a 2-pack) and supports Wired Ethernet Backhaul for better speeds. Any of them can work as a Wi-Fi Router
When should you replace your router?
Check for a software update before replacing older equipment. The FTC advises considering a replacement if WPA2 or WPA3 remains unavailable after updating. When comparing replacements, verify the specific model’s encryption options, update process, support, and network controls; do not assume every mesh system or router offers the same features or support period.
What IoT separation can—and cannot—do
A guest network can keep visitors’ credentials separate from your primary network. For connected devices, NSA guidance recommends separating primary, guest, and IoT networks where possible. NIST’s guidance on Manufacturer Usage Description (MUD) describes a more specific control: with compatible devices and network equipment, rules can limit an IoT device to the network communications it needs. NIST presents MUD as one measure alongside device updates and segmentation, not a substitute for them.

Bottom line: choose for coverage, then compare controls
Pick a single router or mesh system according to the coverage your home needs. For security, judge the particular equipment by its encryption, credentials, updates and support, administrative controls, firewall, and ability to separate guest and IoT devices. A well-maintained single router can be secure; mesh is useful when you need additional coverage, not because its topology is inherently safer.
