If an AirTag won’t connect, check your iPhone or iPad’s software, Bluetooth, location permissions, account setup and network before resetting the tag. If it appears in Find My but its location is not updating, check the status and timestamp: the map may show the last known location rather than a live position. Replace the battery only if Find My reports it is low, and use the reset steps for the correct AirTag generation.
First, tell a pairing problem from a location delay
If the AirTag is missing from Find My’s Items list or setup never finishes, use the connection checks below. If the AirTag is already listed but its location has not changed, open it in Find My and note the displayed status and when it was last located.

Apple says an item’s location updates when it connects to the Find My network. If Find My cannot locate it now, the map can show where and when it was last located instead. Turn on Notify When Found if that option is available, and allow Find My notifications so you can be alerted if a new location arrives. Fix the iPhone or iPad settings before resetting
AirTag setup depends on the Apple device as well as the tag. Apple’s AirTag setup guidance, published September 15, 2026, recommends checking these settings and conditions:

- Update iOS or iPadOS. Apple’s current guide says first-generation AirTag setup requires iOS or iPadOS 14.5 or later; AirTag (2nd generation) requires iOS or iPadOS 26.2.1 or later. These requirements can change, so check Apple’s current guide if your version differs.
- Turn on Bluetooth and Location Services. In Location Services, allow Find My to access location; enable Precise Location for the most accurate location.
- Finish setting up your Apple Account. If prompted, resume iCloud syncing, and make sure Find My network and iCloud Keychain are enabled.
- Connect to a strong Wi-Fi or mobile-data network, then restart your iPhone or iPad and try setup again.
If the setup animation disappeared
Put the device to sleep and wake it, unlock it, then wait 15 seconds for the setup animation to return. When adding more than one AirTag, keep only the tag you are setting up near the device.
If you may have reached the Find My item limit
Apple says Find My can contain up to 32 items. The count can include shared items and accessories, as well as some AirPods according to their device-specific counting rules. If you have many items listed, check the current count before assuming a new tag is faulty.

Check for a low battery before replacing it
Find My shows Low Battery under an AirTag’s name when the battery is low; your iPhone may also send a low-battery notification. If neither indicates a low battery, a location delay alone is not a reason to replace it.

Apple specifies a CR2032 lithium 3V coin battery, installed with the positive side facing up. Some CR2032 cells with bitterant coatings may not work, so check the packaging for a statement that the battery is compatible with Apple AirTag. Reset the AirTag only if it still will not connect
Resetting is not the first step for an old map location. If the tag still will not pair after the checks above, follow Apple’s instructions for its generation; the sound and battery-removal sequence differs. Apple’s reset instructions were published April 20, 2026.

Check ownership if the AirTag was used before
An AirTag can be associated with one Apple Account at a time. If it belonged to someone else, the previous owner must remove it from their account before you can pair it with yours. Apple notes that if the previous owner removed it while it was out of Bluetooth range, you also need to reset it before using it with another device. A reset does not replace removal from the former owner’s account.

An AirTag does not send a continuous GPS feed. The Find My network relies on nearby Apple devices detecting an AirTag over Bluetooth and relaying its approximate location. Apple describes the network as anonymous and encrypted, with over a billion Apple devices participating. If no participating device detects the tag, Find My may have no new location to display.

Apple says Find My can show an AirTag’s last known location for up to seven days when it cannot show its current location. After more than seven days without a location report through the network, the app shows No location found. An online device that cannot send its location—for example, because of a Location Services issue—may instead show Not sharing location • Online. These labels describe different situations; neither is a live position.
If the AirTag may be nearby
Use Play Sound in Find My if it is available. A supported iPhone can also use Precision Finding when the AirTag is close enough. These features help locate a nearby item; they do not make the Find My network report a distant tag sooner. See Apple’s instructions for locating an AirTag or other item.
