A size label alone is not a reliable comparison: a flat shirt width is not the same as a body’s chest circumference, and a T-shirt chart should not be reused for a hoodie.
Start with the exact product and its current size guide
Find the chart for the specific blank or product you plan to sell, not merely a chart for “a T-shirt” or “a hoodie.” Product cut, fit, available sizes, and measurement points can differ even when garments share a nominal size. Link shoppers to the supplier’s current guide or reproduce its numbers carefully, with the garment and fit clearly identified.

For example, Printful’s guides are specific to individual products: see its T-shirt size guide for product 748 and hoodie size guide for product 380. The hoodie guide’s “runs small” advice applies to that particular item, not to hoodies generally. Follow the note on the product you are actually offering.

Place a short explanation directly above the chart saying whether values are garment measurements or body measurements. Printful’s seller guidance, “How to measure a t-shirt for successful selling,” published May 6, 2026, advises sellers to distinguish flat clothing dimensions from “to fit” guidance.

- Garment measurements describe the item itself, such as its length or width when laid flat.
- Body measurements describe the person the garment is intended to fit, such as chest circumference.
Do not label a flat width as “chest circumference.” If a chart uses flat width, say so; shoppers can compare that figure with a similar garment they own. Use the supplier’s labels and diagram for the exact product rather than assuming the same measurement method applies to every garment.
Help shoppers compare a garment they already own
A practical comparison can make unfamiliar size numbers easier to interpret. Suggest that shoppers choose a similar garment whose fit they like, lay it flat without stretching it, and compare its measurements with the chart for your product. A flexible cloth measuring tape is useful, but an appropriate tape they already have is enough.

- Lay the reference garment flat. Smooth it without pulling or stretching the fabric.
- Measure length. For the cited Printful T-shirt guide, length is measured from the high point shoulder beside the collar down to the bottom hem.
- Measure width. For that T-shirt, measure straight across from the seam under one sleeve to the seam under the other. This is a flat garment width, not a person’s chest circumference.
- Compare like with like. Check the same type of garment measurement against the exact product chart. Follow the garment-specific diagram where its points differ.
Printful’s cited T-shirt guide and hoodie guide each state that product measurements may vary by up to 2 inches (5 cm). That tolerance belongs to those supplier guides; do not present it as a universal allowance for other suppliers or products. A garment-to-garment comparison can help shoppers judge fit, but it cannot guarantee a perfect fit.

Use one consistent unit system throughout each chart, label it explicitly, and avoid mixing inches and centimetres without clear column headings. For an audience in the United States, inches may be the most familiar; for international shoppers, adding centimetres can make the chart easier to use. Printful documents metric and imperial options for product size guides in its help article on changing measurement units.

Keep garment fit separate from print size
A size chart tells shoppers about garment fit; it does not tell them how large the artwork will appear. Printful’s Help Center says, “As a general rule, we don’t scale designs based on garment size,” while also describing product-specific exceptions, including cases where artwork is downscaled for smaller sizes or print areas differ. Check the guidance for the product you sell in Printful’s design-scaling help article. Explain print placement or size separately if it matters to a buyer.
A reliable chart-publishing checklist
- Confirm the exact product, blank, fit, size range, and current supplier chart.
- State whether the values are garment dimensions or body measurements.
- Use the product’s own measurement points and diagram.
- Label every unit and keep the chart consistent.
- Show shoppers how to compare with a similar item they own, without promising an exact fit.
- Keep any tolerance or fit recommendation tied to the specific supplier guide that states it.
- Check print-area and artwork-scaling guidance separately from garment measurements.
- Recheck both the chart and print guidance if the supplier or blank changes.
