It can suit people who want a lightweight stream of thoughts and are comfortable using a self-hosted service—or choosing an instance run by someone else.
What Memos is designed to do
The Memos project describes the app as “an open-source, self-hosted home for short-form thinking.” Its central idea is to capture first and organize lightly afterward: you can write without choosing a title, folder, or template, and return to entries through the timeline and search. Tags and pins add ways to group or prioritize notes without turning the app into a document-management system.

The timeline makes Memos a natural fit for daily notes, work logs, snippets, links, and passing ideas. A browser clipper can save pages, selected text, and images as Markdown with source links. These features are described in the Memos project repository.

Is Memos a good fit for your notes?
| Your priority | How Memos fits |
|---|---|
| Capture an idea quickly | Strong fit: notes can be created without first assigning a title, folder, or template. |
| Find short notes later | Use the chronological timeline, search, tags, and pins. |
| Build long, highly structured documents | Less aligned with its short-form timeline focus; the documented feature set emphasizes quick notes rather than elaborate document organization. |
| Control where your data is hosted | Self-hosting gives the operator control of the instance and its storage, but also responsibility for operating and backing it up. |
| Move an existing archive into the app | Check migration support carefully: exporting is supported, while importing an export ZIP is marked work in progress and importing from other note apps is not supported on the official features page. |
This is a workflow comparison, not a head-to-head product ranking. If your work depends on extensive document structure, shared editing, or a well-supported import path, verify those needs against current documentation before moving your notes.

Self-hosting: control comes with upkeep
Memos can be deployed with Docker, native binaries for Linux, macOS, and Windows, or Kubernetes. The official features page lists SQLite, PostgreSQL, and MySQL as database options. A Raspberry Pi can serve as a home server, but it is only one possible setup—not a requirement. Deployment choices and feature details are listed on the official features page.
The project is MIT-licensed, with no software license fee or paid tier. That does not guarantee that running it costs nothing: the server or hosting used for an instance may have a charge. The person or organization administering an instance is also responsible for its operation and backups. Memos’ official documentation includes guidance for deployment, backup, and upgrades; its usage and configuration guides cover version 0.31.0, so consult the current release and upgrade notes for version-specific instructions.

Privacy depends on the instance
New memos are private by default and notes have visibility settings, according to the Memos homepage. But a note is stored in the database for the instance you use. If you run the server, you manage that environment and its backups; if you use someone else’s instance, that operator administers the service. Before putting sensitive material in any instance, understand who controls it and what access and backup arrangements apply.

Memos supports exporting notes and attached files as a ZIP. The official features page marks importing an export ZIP as work in progress and says importing from other note applications is not supported. That makes it sensible to test your own export and recovery needs before treating Memos as the sole home for an established archive. See the features page for the project’s stated import and export status.

- Your capture style: Memos favors short entries and a timeline over a hierarchy of documents.
- Who runs the server: self-hosting offers operational control, while delegating hosting means relying on another instance operator.
- Ongoing costs and care: the license is free, but infrastructure and maintenance are separate considerations.
- Sharing needs: visibility settings exist, but confirm that the available sharing and collaboration behavior matches your use case.
- Portability: export is available; the documented import limitations can matter if you are migrating from another app.
