In everyday use the term usually means a memory card reader. The card holds the data. The drive is the interface that makes the card accessible.
The formal definition
The Office québécois de la langue française lists “memory card reader,” “memory card reader/writer,” and “memory card drive” as English terms for the same entry. Its definition, translated from the French, is “a device for reading or writing data stored on a memory card.” The original wording is “Dispositif de lecture ou d’écriture de données stockées dans une carte mémoire.” The entry was last updated in 2006.

Card versus drive: what is the difference?
- The memory card is the removable storage medium, such as an SD, microSD, P2, or expressP2 card.
- The memory card drive or reader is the hardware that connects the card to a computer so its contents can be accessed.
“Drive” describes how the computer presents the inserted card. It does not mean there is a separate disk inside the card. Once a reader is connected and a card is inserted, the computer can show the card as a removable drive.

How it works in practice
Readers built into other devices
A reader does not have to be a standalone gadget. Canon’s manual for the PIXMA MG6400 series explains how to set up the printer’s card slot as the memory card drive of a connected computer. The manual distinguishes read-only access from writable access over USB or LAN. It also tells users to perform safe removal before physically taking the card out when the slot is used from a computer. These steps are specific to that model, so follow your own device’s manual.

Standalone readers for specific card families
Panasonic’s AU-XPD1 is a USB 3.0, single-slot drive for expressP2 and P2 cards. Using microP2 cards requires the optional AJ-P2AD1G adapter. Panasonic’s AU-XPD3 is a Thunderbolt 3 expressP2 drive. These professional devices show that “memory card drive” does not point to one universal format or connector. They are for specific camera-card workflows. Ordinary SD-card transfers do not need them.
What to check before buying or troubleshooting
- Card format: Confirm the reader supports your exact card type. Dell warns that a reader must support the specific card format.
- Host connection: Match the reader’s interface, such as USB 3.0 or Thunderbolt 3 in Panasonic’s examples, to a port your computer has.
- Adapters: Some formats need a separate adapter, as with microP2 on the AU-XPD1.
- Workflow: A basic reader is enough for general file transfer. Choose a dedicated professional drive only if your camera-card workflow calls for one.
If a card does not appear, first check that the reader supports that format and that the computer detects the reader itself. Dell’s support guidance on SD cards not showing up covers these checks.

Eject before you remove the card
After the computer has accessed a card, use the system’s safe-removal option before pulling the card out. Canon gives this instruction explicitly for its card-slot-as-drive feature. Removing a card without ejecting it risks interrupting a write.
