Begin with the simplest plan structure that clearly describes that offer; add tiers only when each one provides a distinct, sustainable benefit. There is no universally correct membership price, tier count, or annual discount.
How much should you charge for a membership site?
There is no single defensible price for every membership. The right starting point depends on what members receive, what they are willing to pay for that outcome, and what it costs you to deliver it reliably. Price the recurring promise—not just the volume of content or the number of features.

Define the member outcome
Be specific about what payment unlocks: for example, instruction, access to a community, ongoing support, or another recurring benefit. A prospective member should be able to distinguish the paid offer from what is freely available. The clearer the outcome, the easier it is to explain why the membership is worth renewing.

Estimate the work and costs required for each payment period. Include recurring production, member support, platform and payment fees, applicable taxes, and physical fulfillment if you offer tangible benefits. Then estimate the amount you retain—not only the headline price. Fees can vary with payment method, price, currency, location, and conversion.

For example, Patreon’s 2026 fee guidance lists a 10% standard platform fee for creators whose page was published after August 4, 2025, in addition to applicable processing fees and taxes. For USD payments above $3, its listed standard processing rate for credit cards and Apple Pay is 2.9% + $0.30; the at-or-below-$3 micropayment band and other payment types have different rates. Patreon also lists a 2.5% currency-conversion fee when a member pays in a currency different from the payout currency. These are Patreon-specific figures, not general benchmarks, and the platform says payout can also be affected by taxes, currency conversion, and payment characteristics. Check Patreon’s current creator-fee overview for the applicable terms.
Test a starting price with your audience
Use your understanding of the offer and delivery costs to choose a price worth testing. Track paid conversion, renewals, cancellations, upgrades, support workload, and net revenue. Treat those measures as feedback for your own audience: the available platform documentation does not establish a universal price or a quantified conversion result that applies across membership businesses.

How do you set up membership pricing tiers?
A tier should tell members what they receive at that price. Patreon’s setup guidance allows creators to offer one tier or multiple tiers and asks them to describe benefits. Examples in its documentation include merchandise, postcards, livestream attendance, and credits. See Patreon’s tier setup guidance.
Start with the core offer
One paid tier can be enough to test whether people will pay for the central outcome you provide. Keep its benefits concrete and sustainable. A simple plan is often easier to explain and fulfill than several options whose differences are unclear.

Add a tier only for a meaningful difference
Before adding a higher or lower price, identify the additional benefit and the work it creates. A new tier is more useful when it gives a distinct level of access, support, instruction, or another benefit—not merely a new name for nearly the same offer. Physical rewards may be appealing, but account for sourcing, packing, shipping, and support before promising them.
Choose billing intervals deliberately
Monthly and annual billing are options, not requirements. Consider what renewal cadence makes sense for members and for your cash flow. Memberful documents monthly, annual, pay-what-you-want, and custom recurring intervals, but that feature availability does not show that an annual discount is necessary or will increase conversions. How should you compare membership platforms and fees?
Compare the complete cost and operating fit for your particular business. The same headline price can leave different amounts after platform fees, processing, currency conversion, and other applicable costs.

Stripe’s pricing information says transaction fees depend on payment method. Patreon’s published schedule and Memberful’s product descriptions can help frame a comparison, but they do not establish which service will cost least for your site. Check each provider’s current terms for your country, payout currency, expected payment mix, and required features before deciding.

How do you raise prices for existing members?
Explain the change clearly before it takes effect: what is changing, what affected members will pay, and when the new amount will apply. If the offer or your delivery costs have changed, describe that plainly and give members a practical opportunity to decide whether to continue. Check the platform’s rules for grandfathering, renewal timing, notifications, and app-store purchases rather than assuming one service’s process applies everywhere.
Patreon’s current repricing guide says eligible creators using subscription billing can reprice and that existing members are notified. Under the guide’s stated rules, renewals within a 31-day lock period stay at the prior price. It also says iOS in-app purchases are not changed through Patreon’s repricing tool. These are Patreon-specific conditions and may change; consult Patreon’s repricing guidance and check the rules for your own platform before announcing a change.
