Megabits measure bits; megabytes measure bytes. One byte is eight bits, so a 100 Mbps connection rate converts to 12.5 MB/s in an ideal unit conversion. That arithmetic is not a promise of a 12.5 MB/s download: actual throughput can be lower because of network overhead and connection or server conditions.
What is the difference between a megabit and a megabyte?
A bit is a basic unit of digital information. A byte is a group of eight bits. The distinction is shown by capitalization: lowercase b means bit, while uppercase B means byte. Thus, Mb commonly means megabits and MB means megabytes.

Internet connection rates are commonly expressed in bits per second, such as megabits per second (Mbps). File sizes are often expressed in bytes, such as megabytes (MB). NIST defines a byte as 8 bits in its binary-prefix reference.

How do you convert Mbps to MB/s?
When both units use decimal mega, divide the rate in megabits per second by eight to get the equivalent number of megabytes per second:

MB/s = Mbps ÷ 8
For example, 100 Mbps ÷ 8 = 12.5 MB/s. This is a unit conversion, not a measured download result or guaranteed speed. Protocol overhead and real conditions on the connection, including the server, can reduce the rate a download actually reaches.
The same relationship works for amounts of data: 800 megabits is 100 megabytes in decimal units (800 ÷ 8). If a file manager displays a different number, check whether it is using a binary unit rather than assuming the display is wrong.

What do MB and MiB mean?
The prefix mega has a precise decimal meaning: 106, or 1,000,000. Therefore, a megabit is 1,000,000 bits and a megabyte (MB) is 1,000,000 bytes. NIST’s SI guidance says that SI prefixes refer strictly to powers of 10; see NIST SP 330, Section 3.

Binary quantities use separate prefixes. A mebibyte (MiB) is 220 bytes, or 1,048,576 bytes. It is not the same size as a decimal megabyte. NIST sets out both definitions in its binary-prefix reference.

Why can file-size displays disagree?
“Megabyte” has been used inconsistently in some digital contexts. Modern precise notation distinguishes decimal MB from binary MiB, but older conventions and software can leave the label ambiguous. NIST also records a historical diskette convention in which a diskette described as “1.44 MB” used 1,024,000 bytes—not the modern decimal definition of MB. Treat that figure as historical context, not as the definition to use for current conversions.
When two numbers do not match, compare what each is measuring and how it is labeled:
- Quantity: Is the number a transfer rate, such as bits per second, or an amount of data, such as bytes?
- Prefix: Does “mega” mean decimal 106, or is the display using binary mebi, 220?
- Capitalization: Is the unit written with lowercase b for bits or uppercase B for bytes?
- Context: Is it an advertised connection rate, actual throughput, file size, storage capacity, or a legacy software display?
If the label is unclear, look for an exact byte count or a setting that identifies decimal versus binary units. The NIST OSAC glossary entry for “Mbyte” also reflects why careful terminology matters.
