Officials in Meerut district, Uttar Pradesh, have so far reported finding 404 deceased women and 58 other alleged fake beneficiaries on social-welfare pension rolls. District Magistrate Ankit Khandelwal said the affected bank accounts were blocked, but verification was still underway; the figures are interim, not a final statewide count.
What officials have found in Meerut
Hindustan Times reported on October 2, 2026, that district officials identified 404 deceased female beneficiaries and 58 other alleged fake beneficiaries during checks of active pension records. The report said verification was continuing and the number could rise. It does not establish that the 58 other records were confirmed fraudulent.
The report concerns social-welfare pensions, not government-service retirement pensions or family pensions. It does not identify which individual scheme covered every flagged record. Meerut district lists old-age, widow and disability pension services through its Integrated Pension Portal; the national NSAP portal describes central assistance for older people, widows, people with disabilities and bereaved households, alongside state support. Those portals provide context but do not show which scheme applied to each case in this report.
What has happened to the flagged accounts and payments
Khandelwal told Hindustan Times that accounts associated with deceased individuals still receiving pension payments had been blocked. Blocking an account is not the same as completing eligibility decisions or removing every flagged record from the pension rolls. The report said payments to people found ineligible would be suspended after the final verification report; it did not say that the final report had been issued.

The article also reports that Minister Gulabo Devi said the pension amount had risen from ₹500 to ₹1,000. It does not specify the scheme or effective date, so this should not be read as a confirmed rate for every pension type.
Inquiry, monitoring and possible accountability
Gulabo Devi reportedly directed an inquiry and said strict action should follow if a lapse was confirmed. “Fraudulent payments must be stopped, and action taken against corrupt officials,” she said, according to Hindustan Times.

Khandelwal said a team had been deployed to monitor verification and that officials at block or nagar panchayat level would be held accountable if negligence was found. The report describes an inquiry and possible consequences, not a completed disciplinary action, prosecution or finding of individual wrongdoing.
Eligible pensioners may be waiting too
Hindustan Times quoted Munni Devi as saying she had not received a payment for around nine months despite making inquiries. She said she usually received ₹3,000 every three months; that is her account of her own payments, not a general schedule for all beneficiaries. Khandelwal reportedly promised pending payments within 10 to 15 days. The report does not confirm whether she or other eligible residents later received the money.

Why death records matter—and what an older audit does not prove
A 2009 Comptroller and Auditor General of India audit of Uttar Pradesh records covering 2007–09 described old-age pension transfers that continued after beneficiaries died because death information did not reach officials promptly. It reported Rs 4.21 crore transferred to 18,461 accounts in the districts it examined. The audit shows that death notification and record maintenance had been audit concerns before, but it does not establish the cause or financial scale of the current Meerut findings.

The October 2 report does not provide the final verification results, say whether money will be recovered, identify any officials disciplined or prosecuted, or establish whether the promised delayed payments arrived. It also does not map the flagged records to particular pension schemes or give the effective date and scope of the reported increase in pension amounts. Until those details are published, the Meerut counts and response should be treated as interim reporting rather than a completed statewide finding.
