But sales are not assured: one farmer returned from a weekly market with his bullock unsold, while other reported transactions brought less than the owners had paid earlier. The accounts come from particular farmers and markets; the reports do not establish a region-wide count of distress sales or a representative measure of falling prices.
Why are farmers in Marathwada selling cattle?
Crop losses have cut into household income while dry conditions make it harder to secure water and fodder for animals. In the accounts reported from Jalna, Beed and Latur, owners described depleted fodder stocks, damaged crops and livestock water needs that household tanker supplies did not meet.
At the Ausa market in Latur, farmer Suresh Kadam described the scale of that need: “For all my cattle, I need about 1,000 litres a day—one overhead tank. Where do I get that from in such scarcity? I had sown soyabean on my five-acre field but the output has been zero. The soyabean flattened in the heat,” The Indian Express reported on October 2, 2026.
A farmer quoted in the same report said village tanker water arrived every two to three days and covered household needs, but not the demand from livestock. Landless farm worker Sangeeta Gaikwad brought two goats to the Ausa market, citing difficulty finding water and feed. The report also described small landholders attempting to sell cattle.

In a separate account from Majalgaon, Beed, Sham Solanke and another farmer explained their decision: “We do not have fodder to give the cattle. It is better to sell them,” Hindustan Times reported on October 2, 2026.
Why are farmers taking cattle to weekly markets?
Weekly markets provide a place to seek buyers, but the reported accounts show that bringing an animal to market does not guarantee a sale. Gorakh Chavan, from Ghansawangi taluka in Jalna, travelled nearly 50 kilometres by van with a bullock to the Parthi weekly cattle market in Parbhani district on September 27. His soybean and maize crops on seven acres had been completely damaged, according to the report. He said: “I was unable to sell the bullock as cattle traders were not interested. I was even ready to sell it at a low price. I returned home with the animal,” Hindustan Times reported.

Cattle trader Samauddin Inamdar told Hindustan Times that about 150 cattle had been brought to Parthi each week over the preceding month, compared with around 70 in normal periods. Those figures are his market observation, not audited totals. He said there were few buyers and traders could not offer higher prices because they needed to resell the animals. The report also said some traders described difficulty transporting cattle to other states because of the risk of being intercepted on suspicion that the animals were headed to slaughterhouses.
Are farmers getting a fair price for cattle?
The available accounts point to sellers accepting, or being prepared to accept, less than they had paid before, but they cannot establish a standard fair price or a region-wide discount. The examples are individual transactions and purchase comparisons, not a market-price index.

Hindustan Times reported the first two comparisons on October 2, 2026. The reported figures reflect what those farmers said they paid and received; they do not show how prices for comparable animals changed across Marathwada.
How widespread is the drought pressure?
The Indian Express reported that Maharashtra declared drought in 265 talukas on September 25, 2026. It cited the 21st Livestock Census, conducted in 2024, for a Marathwada livestock population of more than 53.59 lakh animals and a daily fodder requirement exceeding 24,000 metric tonnes. These are regional context figures; they do not count how many owners have sold animals.

Divisional administration and a regional animal-husbandry official estimated fodder stocks would last around 130 days statewide, with district estimates ranging roughly from 76 to 179 days. These are official estimates reported by The Indian Express on October 2, not guaranteed supply durations or independent measurements. The official said: “As of today, there is no need for fodder camps in the division. Currently, the available fodder across districts is sufficient for roughly 76 to 179 days. Fodder scarcity may rise in the region from December. However, if Rabi crops are successfully sown, the looming fodder scarcity in the districts can be pushed back or averted,”
The reported estimates of fodder availability and farmers’ accounts of local shortages describe different measures: an administrative estimate of stocks across districts does not mean every village or livestock owner can obtain adequate feed. The Indian Express also reported that, at publication, there had been no separate government announcement on water for animals.

What relief has Maharashtra announced, and how can farmers check eligibility?
On September 22, 2026, News On AIR reported that Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the state would provide immediate assistance without waiting for central financial assistance, begin crop-loss panchnamas and give special attention to drinking water and livestock fodder. The report said planning with local bodies was intended to cover the next seven to eight months. These were announcements and planning commitments; the reports do not verify what was delivered, where, or to how many households.
The Maharashtra Relief and Rehabilitation Department describes the crop-loss relief process on its official website. In the process it outlines, officials conduct a panchnama, records pass through Tahasil and district administration, and proposals are submitted for government approval. After collector approval, a VK number is generated; farmers can use it for free e-KYC at an Aaple Sarkar Seva Kendra, with payments made to Aadhaar-seeded bank accounts. The department directs people seeking further information to their Tahasil or Collector office.
The department page lists assistance for dead livestock, but it does not establish compensation for selling a live animal because of distress. Eligibility and available assistance depend on applicable government orders, so farmers should confirm current requirements with their local Tahasil or Collector office rather than assume a payment applies.
