To stream through MediaMTX and FFmpeg to YouTube, publish your source into a MediaMTX path, then have MediaMTX forward that path to the RTMPS URL and stream key shown for your stream in YouTube Live Control Room. You can also use FFmpeg for forwarding when you need transcoding or filtering. The key requirements are a current YouTube destination, both audio and video tracks, and encoder settings your upload connection can sustain.
How do I stream to YouTube with MediaMTX and FFmpeg on Windows?
The relay has two jobs: FFmpeg sends a source to MediaMTX, and MediaMTX forwards the selected path to YouTube. MediaMTX documents each part, but the examples do not constitute a tested, end-to-end Windows setup for every source. Windows installation, firewall configuration, and the exact command-line details can vary with the packaged build and your setup.

- Get the YouTube destination. Create or schedule a stream in YouTube Live Control Room and copy that stream’s URL and key. If you want encrypted transport, reveal and copy the RTMPS URL; the ordinary RTMP URL may be shown by default.
- Start MediaMTX using a configuration with a path for your source and a forwarding destination. The documented forwarding pattern puts the RTMPS destination and stream key together in the path’s
forwardentry, separated by#. Use the actual URL and key from Live Control Room, not an endpoint copied from an old example. - Publish into the MediaMTX path. MediaMTX’s documented FFmpeg example sends a looping file to the local RTMP path named
mystream:ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i file.mp4 -c copy -f flv rtmp://localhost:1935/mystream. Replacefile.mp4with your input and ensure the path matches your MediaMTX configuration. This example copies the existing streams; it does not convert an incompatible source. - Check that the path reaches YouTube. Confirm MediaMTX is receiving the source and that YouTube Live Control Room reports an incoming stream. Monitor stream health before relying on a scheduled broadcast.
MediaMTX can forward a path natively when the stream is suitable for the destination. Use FFmpeg-based forwarding when the job requires transcoding, filtering, or a protocol MediaMTX’s native forwarding does not support. These roles are distinct: the example above is FFmpeg publishing to MediaMTX, while the forwarding configuration sends MediaMTX’s path onward to YouTube.

Open YouTube Live Control Room, create or schedule the broadcast, and use the stream URL and key displayed for that specific stream. Copy the current destination when you are ready to configure the relay: MediaMTX’s example endpoint reflects what YouTube reported when its documentation was last updated, not a guarantee that the endpoint remains current.

Treat the key as a credential. Reuse it only as intended for your configured stream; if it is exposed or compromised, reset or replace it in Live Control Room and update the MediaMTX forwarding destination. A replaced key will not work until the relay configuration uses the new value.
Which protocol and encoder settings should I use?
Prefer RTMPS for the destination
YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts stream data to and within Google’s servers. Use the RTMPS URL shown in Live Control Room rather than assuming the sample URL in another configuration is still valid. Plain RTMP does not provide the same transport encryption.

Keep both audio and video in the stream
YouTube requires an audio track as well as video; MediaMTX’s documentation warns that video-only streams are silently rejected. Before investigating forwarding, inspect the source or encoder output and verify that both tracks are present. If your material has no audible content, provide an audio track rather than sending video alone.
Match encoder output to YouTube and your upload connection
YouTube’s live encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, lists RTMP/RTMPS; H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; frame rates up to 60 fps; and constant bitrate (CBR). It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says the interval should not exceed four seconds. YouTube’s table gives 1080p at 30 fps with H.264 as 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended. That is a YouTube-published encoder setting, not a guarantee that a particular Windows connection can sustain it.

Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate together. Test upload capacity and use representative motion and audio: a static test image may conceal problems that appear in fast movement or complex sound. Keep the selected bitrate within sustainable upload bandwidth, then watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators during a test broadcast.
Why is YouTube not receiving my stream?
- Incorrect or stale destination: compare the configured URL and key with the current values in Live Control Room. Stream destinations and keys are stream-specific, and the endpoint in MediaMTX’s example may no longer match.
- RTMPS or SSL error: verify that the destination begins with the current
rtmpsURL from Live Control Room. YouTube’s help guidance says specifying port 443 may help with an SSL error, but use the URL and port provided for the stream rather than adding a port indiscriminately. - Video-only source: confirm an audio track is present as well as video. YouTube silently rejects video-only streams.
- Path mismatch: the path receiving FFmpeg’s RTMP publish must be the path configured for forwarding. Check the publish URL and MediaMTX path configuration character for character.
- Unsupported or unsuitable source format: the sample command uses
-c copy, which copies rather than transcodes. If the source needs conversion, filtering, or a different protocol, configure an FFmpeg forwarding workflow appropriate to that need. - Insufficient upload capacity or unstable stream health: lower the bitrate, resolution, or frame rate to a level your connection can sustain, and retest with representative content.
- Windows-specific launch or network issue: confirm the executable, configuration path, local RTMP listener, and firewall rules match your Windows build. The cited documentation does not establish a universal Windows installation or firewall recipe, so do not assume a Unix-style command or path will work unchanged.
How can I check the MediaMTX configuration?
MediaMTX documents configuration validation with ./mediamtx --validate-conf=/path/to/mediamtx.yml and says it can hot-reload configuration when possible. The shown validation command is general documentation, not a guaranteed copy-paste Windows command: check the executable name and path syntax for your packaged Windows build. Fix configuration errors before troubleshooting YouTube connectivity.
