NGINX RTMP does not automatically turn a directory into a repeating playlist. To rotate videos, use a playlist or script to select and feed files to FFmpeg; let NGINX RTMP receive or relay that continuous feed, then send it to YouTube Live. The exact playlist mechanism depends on your operating system, FFmpeg build, and whether the files have compatible media formats, so test it before relying on it for a public stream.
How the video rotation pipeline works
Keep the jobs separate: a file selector decides what plays and in what order; FFmpeg reads the files and produces a continuous stream; NGINX RTMP can receive or relay that stream; YouTube Live receives the encoder output at its server URL using your stream key.

- Playlist or script: defines order, repeat behavior, and what should happen when a file is missing or added.
- FFmpeg: reads the selected media and emits a stream. Depending on the files, it may be able to copy compatible streams or may need to re-encode them.
- NGINX RTMP: supports live streaming, local filesystem or HTTP VOD playback for FLV and MP4, external program execution, and pushing streams to remote RTMP destinations. Its documented VOD paths do not establish that pointing
playat a directory creates a rotating playlist. The nginx-rtmp-module README describes these capabilities. - YouTube Live: supplies the destination server URL and stream key in Live Control Room.
This division of responsibilities is an architectural interpretation of the documented module features, not a tested, universal playlist recipe. Avoid treating an NGINX play directive as a folder-rotation feature.

Choose where FFmpeg runs
Run FFmpeg as the playlist publisher
A separate FFmpeg process can read the playlist and publish to NGINX RTMP, which can then relay the stream. This makes the playlist mechanism explicit and can simplify supervision of the FFmpeg process. You still need to define restart behavior, playlist updates, and how errors are handled; the module documentation does not guarantee those behaviors.

Have NGINX RTMP invoke FFmpeg
The community module documents external-process execution, including FFmpeg examples. This can tie a process to an RTMP event, but it does not by itself solve folder scanning, bad-file recovery, or playlist transitions. Test the precise configuration and lifecycle you intend to use.
The module README says Windows support is limited and execs are unsupported there. Do not assume an exec ffmpeg configuration will work on a Windows build. F5’s NGINX RTMP documentation covers a dynamic module for NGINX Plus; its installation and reload steps are not a universal recipe for community builds.

Prepare the playlist and media
- Choose a playlist mechanism. For a stable library that rarely changes, a static list can be simpler than repeatedly scanning a directory. This is an implementation choice, not an NGINX guarantee. Confirm that your selected player or script handles end-of-file transitions and errors as intended.
- Define rotation behavior. Decide whether the list plays once or repeats, how files are ordered, and whether new files are picked up only after a restart or at another defined point. Dynamic folder watching and live updates are not established by the module documentation.
- Check the media. Compare codecs, dimensions, frame rates, aspect ratios, and audio layouts across the files. Stream copying may not work cleanly when inputs differ; encoding or normalization may be needed. Check the actual media and your FFmpeg version rather than assuming one command fits all files.
- Decide how failures should behave. Test missing, unreadable, or damaged files and establish whether the playlist skips them, stops, or requires a process restart. Do not assume automatic recovery from a bad file.
Configure NGINX RTMP and YouTube Live
- Verify the module is present. Check that your NGINX build includes RTMP support. The community module is built with NGINX source; NGINX Plus uses its documented dynamic-module path. These are different distribution methods.
- Check the configuration. Where appropriate for your installation, run
nginx -tbefore making the stream public. F5’s documented instruction to test the NGINX Plus configuration applies to its NGINX Plus module setup; do not assume its reload procedure applies to every build. - Set the ingest path. The module README gives
rtmp://host/app/nameas the RTMP URL shape, whereappcorresponds to an application block. Use the path expected by your configuration. - Get the destination from YouTube. In YouTube Live Control Room, use the server URL and stream key shown for your stream. Treat the key like a password: do not put it in public configuration examples, logs, or shared screenshots. YouTube documents resetting a compromised key in Live Control Room in Manage live stream settings.
- Choose RTMPS when supported. Use the RTMPS URL supplied in the control room and confirm that your encoder supports it. YouTube recommends encrypted RTMPS transport.
Match YouTube’s encoder guidance
YouTube Help’s encoder guidance, viewed October 3, 2026, lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; frame rates up to 60 fps; AAC or MP3 audio; and constant bitrate (CBR) encoding for RTMP/RTMPS. It recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. These are platform recommendations, not guarantees of performance for a particular server or file. Check the current YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions and the settings shown for your stream before publishing.
Set output resolution and bitrate for the stream you intend to deliver, using YouTube’s current table for the chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec. If the source files vary, make sure the output stays within a consistent profile or normalize them; otherwise transitions can fail or produce unexpected results. Do not assume that stream copying preserves a consistent output across mixed media.

Test the full rotation before going public
- Start with a short test playlist containing representative motion and audio, including any formats or transitions that may be difficult for your library.
- Confirm that the playlist advances and repeats as intended, and observe what happens when a file is missing or cannot be read.
- Check that FFmpeg remains running and that NGINX RTMP receives or relays the feed continuously.
- Use YouTube’s stream-health indicators to check the incoming video and audio before switching to a public stream. YouTube recommends testing representative motion and audio and monitoring stream health.
- Test the restart and recovery behavior you need. A successful file transition does not establish that the system will recover after a process crash, a bad file, or a dropped YouTube connection.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely area to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| NGINX rejects the configuration | Syntax, module availability, or a directive unsupported by the installed build. | Run nginx -t where appropriate; confirm which RTMP module and NGINX edition you installed. |
| FFmpeg cannot publish to the RTMP path | Mismatch between the configured application path and the publisher URL. | Compare the URL’s app component with the RTMP application block; the documented URL shape is rtmp://host/app/name. |
| Only one file plays, or the stream stops at the end | The file selector may not be configured to advance or repeat. | Check the playlist mechanism’s end-of-file and looping behavior. NGINX VOD playback does not imply automatic directory rotation. |
| The stream breaks at a file transition | Incompatible codecs, dimensions, frame rates, aspect ratios, or audio layouts. | Inspect both files and test whether a consistent encoded output is required instead of stream copying. |
| A newly added file does not play | The playlist may be static or may only be read at process start. | Check the selected playlist tool’s folder-update behavior and whether it requires a restart; dynamic updates are not guaranteed by the module documentation. |
| YouTube reports an ingest or stream-health problem | Wrong server URL or key, unsupported transport, or encoder settings that do not match current guidance. | Recheck the Live Control Room URL and key, confirm RTMPS support if using RTMPS, and verify codecs, CBR, frame rate, and keyframe interval. |
| The exec approach fails on Windows | The community module documents limited Windows support and says execs are unsupported there. | Do not rely on the exec method for that build; choose a supported process arrangement and validate it on the target system. |
Or let it run in the cloud
